DTG: What would you like to see in a new Flight Simulator?

You can always call in extremes, but it does not invalidate a general point. Its not even a hard search to find videos of people playing COD style in Arma. More to what I actually meant, in FSX you can fly a plane as rigidly as if it's your job, or you can try to land your glider on top of somebodys roof. Whether it's a simulation or game at that point becomes up to a user. In DCS I can do a complicated full engine startup, or ignore all of that entirely and barnstorm. Again the usage trumps whatever the designer intended. In GTA 5 I can fly around like a maniac, or I can attempt to keep the flight as far within "real" parameters as possible. Again, intent (and some modding) is the key. As many rigid examples as you can draw, I can point to more flexible ones, and in modern gaming flexibility, essentially sandbox worlds that let the user decide, are the future.

Yes, FSX is a SIMULATOR not GAME for all of us OLD (and lots of New) hardcore FS silent fanatics. Yes, we can see and hear about those games you mentioned above and even know how to get/buy them. We (I am sure) wish them all the best.

Your video (good one) is impressive but highly obtainable with FSX since is just a matter of a new and improved Data Base.

As far as the size of a potential Flightsim world, I will leave that up to DTG.

I am sure they will sleep better tonight now that they have your go ahead. Thanks.

And finally, this is so elementary. When you have the World you have Hawaii. But when you have Hawaii only you not have anything else except Hawaii. Get it? Which one is really better, really?

BTW, let the keyboard assignments as they are since anybody can change them to their preference. Too many? Too so sorry.

Cheers,

Yes, FSX is a SIMULATOR not (a) GAME

When I was heavily into FSX I called it a simulator;  nowadays though I'd call it a 'simulator-game' since it contains scenarios and challenges clearly designed for pleasure and entertainment, plus  FSX is classed as a game suitable for '3 year olds and above'. In addition the default install folder is 'Microsoft Games", and the DVD has the words "Games for Windows" on the box.....

That is semantics.

All MSFS's/DTGFSX-SE have the word Simulator, probably from Simulation, in it. So what, right?

There are a lot of pilots flying for entertainment too. So what, right?

Some pilots have stated that their jobs allow them to do what they love. So what, right?

Ergo all MSFS's, XPlane, Flightgear and DTG-FSX-SE are Simulators. So what, right?

And all of them Entertain. So what, right?

And on and on and on. So what, right?

Cheers,

I feel your pain bro. ;-)    :P

You can find many people on both sides of the game/sim divide as regards FSX and others, and all can point to various reasons to believe this or that. To me, if the discussion has devolved to the point where we are essentially debating how many angels can dance on the end of a pin.........

Actually, they just might.

After all, they did ask...... which assumes they assign some value to, and have some interest in, the various answers given.

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

So, we can agree that FSX (& family), coming from ACES Gaming Studio, suitable for '3 year old and above', marketed as a game, is a game that simulates a simulator?

I did have a great sleep last night.

We can call it whatever we like, .....

FSX not only comes from Microsoft Game Studios, but my box also states Games for Windows.

It seems that those vehemently claim it's a simulator lack self-confidence, and are terrified of being taken as a "gamer"

Gerry Howard

Actually more accurately there is a third category FS fits into. If you use it for scoring ie: Missions it's a game, as the term "game" is normally used to describe an activity that is competitive or has a goal. if you use it to simulate real world procedures with accurate modeled aircraft, ATC (VATSIM or other) etc... then it's a simulator. If though you use it to goof around in free flight like looping a 737, or intentionally crashing into things, then the most applicable term for that is you're using it as a toy!!! I think most in this community would fall into the simulator category, as we try to fly real world flights, with real world flightplans using real world NAV databases. While others would fall in the Game or Toy category.

Thanks

Anyway,

Back on subject, Just watched the latest Twitch from DTG and although they give nothing away in these broadcasts.....kind of defeats the point of doing them! all theyeversay say is cannot say at this time.....it was mentioned that an update is due soon...possibly July and Cockpits and Cursors were hinted at!

Maybe a fix for the dreaded FPS drop with the mouse.....who knows

Lets see what the Beta brings in

All the best

On or off the subject, Microsoft did go to the trouble & expense of supplying real world data-bases (Jeppeson) for it's "flight simulation".  Most pure gamers wouldn't know or care.  As far as I'm concerned, at the end of the day, MSFS products were right at the top of the heap, for overall "desktop" simulation.  Of course there are (were) other products that fine tune simulation for specific requirements.

Over the years, I'd often see that Brand X would be called a simulation while Brand MS would be labeled as a game. That comes from marketing & hype. I flew the real thing, and always knew better.

Agreed..and since the 'goal' or 'competitive' aim of most 'flightsim' users is to take-off properly and safely and then land properly and safely, FSX etc is therefore clearly a game -as these activities are goals ..or to be more generous, FSX is a game/sim.

But anyway, life itself is a game..and we are all but players playing our part ;-)

Rather unsurprisingly Wobbie and Gerry have managed to derail yet another interesting thread.

Well done you two,

Not really derailing anything, just looking back to see where we have come from. A reality check maybe? :Hypnotized:

Some of us really need to loosen up here, We giving suggestions to a gaming company after all.

:hi: to all that cannot lol..
