Windows 10 compatibility

Featured Replies

On one of my computers I have been using rtm w10 and I have computers using vista, w7 and w8.1 and I find W10 A far better system.  All my computers are using system builders version of Windows so I hope I will be able to upgrade them as soon as W10 is released for download.  Untill I know P3d will be compatable and all software I am using for FS compatable with W10 I will hold off on my FS computer.

You mean the release preview - is has not been RTM'd - Release To Manufacturing - just yet.

Ah yes DX12, good point I had forgotten about that. Yes that has an impact in gaming. The saying "don't fix what isn't broken" does ring true for the most part, but people will need to upgrade when W7 becomes out of support. You could easily last 6 months staying put and see what reports come out regarding gaming and then make the switch next year. You're just better off reserving your copy now so it's free. Get it while it's free, it would be crazy not to

OMG I thought I was the chosen 1 by MSN  offering me a free upgrade to W10 from W7-64.....Now two questions if you please...:

1- If I accept, will all my pregames includes FSX and addons will work automatically with W10? or will requier new installations?

2- Does FSX compatible with W10 in the first place?

Many thanks

If it's an upgrade, they should still work. However, until someone attempts this, it's an unknown

Yes people have it working as well as P3D, on the early release builds on W10

Dear Guys,

I am currently running my P3D on Windows 8.1. Am I correct that the upgrade to Windows 10 will probably not require a complete new install of P3D? It would be a real nightmare to reinstall all those addons....

Thanks in advance,

Tris

I don't think so since it should be an in-line upgrade, not a complete re-install of Windows. However, until someone does it, we don't know for sure. Best wait for a guinea pig :)

You are correct I am on build 1074 now, I realize

this after I posted..

For what it's worth, I have been using preview builds of Windows 10 since the fall of last year with all versions of flight sim (FSX, FSX-SE, and P3D2.x) and all versions work as well or better than they did in Windows 8.1.  Windows 10 is even lighter on resources than Win8.1 so performance is very good.  This has been my experience, I'm not saying it will be the same for anyone else.  For me, Win10 is a huge improvement over Win8.x, esthetically and performance-wise.  The disjointed feel of Win8.x is gone and we're back to a more Win7 type look and feel, but with some of the "modern" look in the new Start menu.  It works just fine.

Microsoft is doing whatever they can to distance themselves from Win8.x as quickly as possible and offering free (no strings attached) upgrades to legal versions of Win7 and Win8.1 is a brilliant thing to do.  It's not a gimmick.  Any software company would want their user base to be on the same version of their software from a configuration management point of view.  I believe (from all I've seen since late last year) that Win10 will be a hit for Microsoft, like Win7 was after Vista.  Maybe not as big a hit, but certainly a major improvement.  Time will tell.

At this stage, having installed and used all released Win10 builds with flight sim (primarily P3D2.5), I am a very happy camper.  Again, YMMV.

Dan, I have a great deal of respect for you and am a bit saddened to see that you are considering MS's offering as spam. If you already have Win 7, 8, 8.1, what's the harm in offering a free upgrade to 10? Would you say the same about Apple, when you go into the store, a nice big advert for Yosemite for example? I think that Microsoft has \ is re-inventing itself under the leadership of Satya Nadella and recovering from the crazy mess left by Ballmer et al. Offering this update free is a good sign of faith for all those who rue the day they got Win 8.x and hated it - it IS what 8.x should have been and offering it free is a good way of giving a little back to the users. If you really hate MS and Windows so much, why use there products? If it was not for MS and Windows, I am not sure Avsim would even be around let alone PMDG etc. (Yes I realize there are other platforms but none come close to Windows \ FSX \ P3D combo.

Thanks Wes, I'm not normally a Microsoft basher although there are times I want to take a baseball bat to my computer now that I am trying to learn the principles underlying the binding of a C# ObservableCollection generic class to a WPF DataGrid using XAML. What a mess.... anyway back on topic:  Quicken update notices include a checkbox that allows me to decline to see further offers but Microsoft puts their upgrade offer in a mandatory software update that I cannot turn off.  I can uninstall it but it will want to reinstall because it is "recommended (same as critical)."  There is a difference between an advertising offer and something being pushed in my face, repeatedly.  Microsoft's commercial success is because we need a common platform for information exchange and the difference in the how business and industry does business has been transformed over the past 20 years.  My own personal opinion is that Microsoft is finding itself in the same position that IBM was in 30 years ago or Fairchild when they gave a small startup called Intel a loan.  I'm sure there will be more "new" OS products after Win10 but their market share in tablets and phones will continue to plummet as their core product the desktop becomes an anachronism and the OS becomes bloated with things like the .NET framework.

After W10 is released I plan to upgrade my FS computer and at that time will switch to W10, system builders version is a legal copy but may not be able to upgrade.  Hopefully they come out with a system builders version as they are cheaper than regular versions.

Precisely why I don't feel it is spam advertising. If they wanted money for it I may feel a bit differently.

Nothin works "automatically" - most things should work OK if they currently work on 8.1. What will be trickier is official support from developers like PMDG as until they give the word, you are technically using it at your own risk.

Dan, if you accept the offer for the free upgrade, it stops bothering you. You can even just hide the little Windows icon on the taskbar and it won't bother you until Win 10 release late next month.

I think they have realized that their strengths in those markets are not going to get much better, but allowing support for Android and iOS apps to run on Windows 10 (no doubt through some sort of hypervisor) is a big step in the right direction.

In terms of desktops becoming obsolete - I just designed a large deployment for a construction company who's previous IT advisor tried to get them doing everything on iPads and phones using consumer software to try to tie it all together - the client lost a lot in productivity and did an about face, I recommended getting high-power desktops with a tri-monitor setup running Windows 7 and using the Office 365 Enterprise platform and the client is very happy now. They still use their mobile devices, but as support devices rather than the core device. Certainly, a lot of more basic home users could do without a desktop, but I don't believe we will see them disappear anytime soon.

The E&C I worked for was locally owned and relatively small (<200).  We went to multi-monitors and wide screens as soon as we started implementing 3D-CAD about 8 yrs ago, very important for productivity.  As for desktops, we built our own and saved tons of money plus always had spare parts LOL.  I consider these machines workstations rather than desktop computers but the line between has blurred as far as hardware.  Also, in my mind we're not even talking IT in the traditional sense because this stuff is a world apart from Office Suite applications, except during the lunch hour when a few designers get together and play multiplayer action games... that was fun to watch.

I have calmed down somewhat after reading a dozen reviews on-line for Windows 10 and their marketing strategy for the free deployment of the upgrade; however, a little voice is whispering in my ear "beware of FREE claims."  I know there is a hook someplace, have they started data mining to earn money on private information a' la Google Android phones or are they using the push strategy to build a wide platform in hopes of attracting developers (build it and they will come)?

This is fantastic news Doug. Definitely gives me hope.
