My version on how to get smooth and stutter free P3D 3.1

Adam - further up in the thread Steve included how to create a batch file to set the affinity for ASN, etc. HOWEVER, if you are using Project Lasso - just set the proper cres there and forget about it.

Also, with the AM set in the cfg file, you do NOT need to d anything with P3D in PL.

Hi Guys,

I'm using an i5 processor overclocked to 4.7. I have an AF of 14 set in my P3D .cfg so the Sim is using cores 1,2 and 3. This leaves Core 0 for me to run my ASN and EzDok etc via Project Lasso. Does that sound right to you? I've read through this whole thread and most of you guys have an i7 with Hyper Threading so it's not making much sense to me. ( I went for an i5 as I read at the time that overclocking was better without HT. )

I'd be happy if my P3D V3.1 ran smooth with nothing else running let alone running face tracking and ASN. So far I am not happy with the performance of this compared to FSX in DX10.

I have I7 3770K @ 4.5 ghz and EVGA GTX 780 classified gpu. P3d is on a brand new Samsung 500 gig evo ssd all to itself.

I do wish everyone would take the time to read this topic as the question being asked have been answered more that once now.

@chris512

As been said many times, if your running with no HT you do not need a AM and it's best not to set one.

Like wise and as Vic has said

@Adam

You set the AM in P3d not PL, that's only for Ezdoz etc.

Please guys read thought before asking a question. I understand 10 pagers is a pain but you should fine your answers.

Thanks.

I went for an i5 as I read at the time that overclocking was better without HT.

Turn on HT and the chip does more work. More work = more heat. So to achieve ultimate GHz, turn off HT. Seems fair enough, but do we want ultimate GHz or HT?

Let's break the sim (P3D/FSX) into three sections; Rendering, Data supply, Simconnect.

Rendering performance comes from the ultimate GHz of the chip.

Data Supply and Simconnect performance comes from multi-tasking.

Two of the three vital components rely heavily on multi-tasking, and multi-tasking is enhanced quite a bit with Hyperthreading.

There will be a trade off, unless we can gain enough sheer frequency without HT enabled we will actually lose real sim performance.

OK, So If you don't set a AM, then this thread is irrelevant for me right? With no AM, P3D just uses all 4 Cores of my i5 and there's no point in me using PL to tell my supporting progs to use a different Core to P3D. Is that right?

How does windows assign which cores / threads to run on.

I started process Explorer and watched the cpu usage, I had core zero maxed out & all the others at quarter to half usage. The cpu is dancing from 23 to 53 usage. If I then change the affinity in task manager, switching core zero off I see that core drop and usage goes up over the other cores / threads.

If I then go back and set affinity over all 4 cores and 4 threads the usage is equal across all 4 cores and all 4 threads and cpu usage is less spikes.

Thanks for your post David.  I'll be keen to try the settings out this weekend.

At Last! a completed flight of 90 minutes with not stutters, fluent graphics and breathtaking visuals thanks to applying the settings as outlined in this topic.....

My system -  i7-4790K @ 4.5 Gtx 680

Used recommended settings from the thread,  P3D31 AM 116, HT on, Framerate locked at 30,  ASN AM 0,1,3,7. Also running Orbx England and Norway and Base, GSX, UK2000 Edinburgh, AS ENTC, ProAtc-X. Flown in the AS 319, EGPH-ENTC. Settings slider to Ultra but turned HDR OFF

Thankyou, thankyou Steve and Dave,

Nice!!! I will try too. AM 116 with HT on. Thanks

Yes Chris for the P3d side but you could try taking off TrackIR etc off core 0,1, but not sure that will work, so yes the topic is about 4-6 cores and HT on.

Nope!

With four cores (no HT):

(On 4 LPs no AM = AM=0 = AM=15)

P3D AM=0=(1111)=F=0,1,2,3 <- sim (Dec, Bin, Hex, LP)

ASN AM=14=(1110)=E=1,2,3 <- weather

Ext AM=14=(1110)=E=1,2,3 <- other addons

I tried to make this all work with a bat file for ASN and TrackIR but it won't work... The path to ASN on my PC is C:\Programs\HiFi\ASNext_P3D\ASNext.exe so I created this bat:

CD\
CD "C:\Programs\HiFi\ASNext_P3D"
C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /C start /affinity 8B ASNext.exe

ASN is started but when I check the cores all cores are enabled...? (AM is 8B because that is the opposite of AM=116 in the P3D.cfg.)

Try it with something like notepad.exe so you can see the .bat working. Some apps may not respond if they have their own setting. By the way, choosing the opposite isn't correct at all, where'd that come from?
