Ask Dovetail Games about DTG Flight School & Flight Simulator

Featured Replies

The problem there is that DX12 is Win10 only and excludes a pretty large majority of the potential market both for Flight School and, much more to the point, Flight Simulator. Somewhat further up the thread DTG Martin specifically said this was why DTG went with DX11.

Sure, I understand that, but they can´t do much with the old API (DirectX 11).

Lockheed Martin has done a lot with P3D and DX11.

Pretty sure Windows 7 users are able to play DX 12 games, but only using DX 11. Just like people with DX 11 cards can play DX 12 games, you just don't get the DX 12 features or performance (duh).

Hopefully in a year or so into the full sim, they'll bring DX 12 support. Really stupid not to, especially if they are serious about developing a true sim for the future, which supports VR. If you want something that can really outclass P3D, then DX 12 is a no brainer.

Sure they did, but not enought. In my opinion, only DX12 will have the tools to change this.

I doubt DX12 games can be played using DX11, but I'd gladly learn better. Prepar3d is DX11 and does not run under DX9 only.

I had two hopes, when I switched to Win10 early: The first was, FlightSimulators would quickly embrace DX12 because of its many advantages, at least as an alternative option. The second was to get an able browser with Edge. Both turned out to be phantoms, so far.

Kind regards, Michael

Well, of course a DX12 title does NOT run on a system limited to DX11 (Windows 7).

Oh the ignorance...

There will always be the next big thing around the corner.

I remember when people were begging for DX11 to be implemented. Once they got it, they want DX12, etc, etc.

But only because especially FlightSIm developers are years behind technology since MS left the house...

Here's what I know: I have now spent many many many hours in Flight School, giving it the maximum possible benefit of a doubt as i've put it through its paces.

My first knee-jerk negative impression slowly faded until I could see past it to something promising beneath, but I have to say: After being warned before release about the lighting, and now after release still not even promising to do anything (that I know of) Flight School is painfully ugly to the point that I just go "URGGGGHHHHHHH!!!" and exit the program.

I won't go into the lessons, that can be rectified. I won't harp on the FSX heritage, P3D shows that can be mitigated.

But that lighting and those clouds are....... let me be blunt;

A travesty.

Everything else, I can overlook as a first attempt, but those things are just plain old unacceptable as a serious effort, especially after being repeatedly warned before release.

Concerning the ugly lighting - I'm guessing you would exit also this flight:

If there is something our players think we should be looking at then we want to hear all about it. The best way to do that is to get in touch with us via our support website dovetailgames.kayako.com - Martin

I'm no developer, but if DX12 is confirmed to be backwards compatible to run on DX11 cards (without all the new features obviously), then I don't see why the same wouldn't be true between operating systems.

Hi Heimi, Microsoft were behind the curve as well. Looking back now they had such a job for each release just updating the content alone... But you always felt they could have done a better job with the engine. It's nice therefore that we have another developer "having a go", just a pity really this couldn't have started 10 years ago...

I've also spent a fair amount of time in Flight School and agree there is hope, though I'd rephrase your harsh assessment as "needs significant improvement". I too think that lighting is a really basic feature that should have been nailed down by now; I just hope their programmers really know what they are doing.  I've seen screen shots elsewhere where someone tossed in REX cloud textures and they still looked like burnt Wonder Bread toast.  Overall I see this product as their "soft release" and I got my $15 worth...any higher price and it would have been an instant request for a steam refund.
