Active Sky Cloud Art for FSX & P3D - Released!

Featured Replies

Exactly. You just need to run REX Interface again to activate your old sky/cloud textures.

Word of caution, however. If you have AS16 and ASCA installed, make sure that latter is uninstalled, otherwise with each AS2016 session ASCA starts automatically and it's not possible AFAIK to isolate ASCA lauch without uninstalling it at all. That's why some folks feel that they have the "same sky colors"

The first test flight I did actually worked using my original sky textures as I had Sky Textures unchecked from the start and I used the ASCA clouds.  I then decided to try the ASCA sky textures but it seems like the only way to revert back to my originals is to uninstall both ASCA/AS16 and reinstall.  It didn't matter how may times I replaced my textures, ASCA would put their sky textures back in!  I'm either missing something or maybe it's a bug..?? I will try to reinstall ASCA and uncheck sky textures before injecting a theme.  If that works, I'll just have to not touch the sky textures again!

  • No.   Neither is needed to be done.     This is not intended to anyone particular but:   If you don't like the price then don't buy it. If you don't like the look then don't buy it.   Problem

did you get the hotfix? one of the items listed is this, sounds similar to your issue:

"- Fixed problem with sky color and/or clouds not properly deactivating for installation when previously using dynamic theme"

Andy - Yes, I did actually try all this after installing the hotfix. I posted on the Hifi forum last night but have not gotten a response as of yet.

The only thing that worked for me was to uninstall both ASCA and AS16 (you can keep the settings) and delete the CloudArtBackups directory in P3D root, then reinstall both products including hotfixes. To be on the safe side, make the selection under "ENABLED CONTENT" before first installing a theme.

No idea. I'd rather have HiFi to provide a legit option to separate ASCA from AS2016 launch on user's discretion.

In ASCA, if you uncheck Enable Content (4 of them) in ASCA then you are effectively are disabling ASCA "textures" ... but I agree it would be nice to have the option to not use ASCA in AS16 as it can lead to lots of questions and mis-understandings.

This is the process I use to make sure I'm getting my REX sky textures and not ASCA

Cheers, Rob.

Rob - I guess that brings a question to mind, if we decide to disable all ASCA texture options (if we want to use all REX textures for example), is ASCA still providing some kind of benefit??  Do the dynamic themes still do anything in this case?

Hi,

Anyone using the alternative ASCA HD resolution pack? If so, is there a performance impact or is that a rhetorical question?

If you are not using ASCA or not using ASCA textures, you lose the dynamic themes.

Anyone's 4096 textures will have a performance impact, Mike. How much depends on the strength of your system.

I bought it for the upgrade price of $41.92 at SimMarket.  I was logged into my account and it automatically provided me the upgrade.  If I did not see the upgrade price in my cart, I would have backed out and investigated.  I have since installed the product and it is very different from the latest version of ASN for P3D.  I am impressed so far.  I went to KLAX and there was some low clouds over the area.  As I went through the clouds, I could see them rushing past my aircraft window.  Extremely realistic so far.  The clouds looked very nice too.  Awesome job and thanks to the HiFi Team and their many beta testers!

For FSX I think I will keep ASN.  It works well there.  I am slowly moving over to P3D as I think that will be the sim of the future.

Best regards,

Thanks for the review Jim. I know what I'm doing tonight....

My assumption is that you still get dynamic processing for those "elements" still "checked" under Enabled Content.  So if Sky Colors are NOT checked, but Cirrus, Cloud Textures, and Cloud Structures are checked, then those 3 checked elements will get the dynamic processing?  Is that accurate or false?

I'm not sure why I have two Prepar3D v3 listings there, have reported issue and tried to edit one out of the AS16 cfg but no success.

Cheers, Rob.

Anyone using the alternative ASCA HD resolution pack?

Yes, I installed it, I didn't notice any difference in performance ... I didn't measure VAS.

Cheers, Rob.

Could some please elaborate on "Cloud Structures"? What is so special about them in ASCA that other vendors (REX for example) lack of.

That is correct Rob. If the elements are enabled they will get the dynamic processing.

Thanks Rob. For some reason I was concerned I might lose the lower resolution options but I see that is not in fact the case. The slider in ASCA can now be moved all the way right from 2048x2048 to 4096x4096. Playtime!

DXT or 32-bit? In the past (before ASCA) I've been using 32-bit for REX4 TD Soft Clouds and performance could be slightly better although, to be honest, I was never quite sure.

Regards,

Mike

Pics are slightly over-saturated due to my phone, but I have not had a better weather experience with regards overcast conditions.  It is, at the very least, worth your time trialing it.

Well it took me all of about 5s before purchasing it last night! Initial quick flight looked very good :)

Can't wait for AS16 + REX SkyForce!

DXT or 32-bit?

I'm using DXT ... I kinda prefer clouds a little fuzzier ... in real world when flying thru or very close to clouds they most definitely don't have an "edge" ... it's only view distance that make them seem "edge" like.

I'm using REX sky textures and ASCA full dynamics for everything else ... a few hotfix's later and they are all working together in harmony :)

Cheers, Rob.
