Would upgrading from Win 7 -> Win 10 make P3D run better?

Featured Replies

Win10 is working flawlessly for me, after my forced upgrade from Win7, which fortunately went without a hitch. Performance in P3D and FSX is exactly the same as far as I can tell, the same is true for all the games I have on my system. Despite an upgrade from a four year old install of Win7 I am running 100% stable, and the OS is very nice to work with. Driver and development support will concentrate on Win10 from now on, so I would rather be on this platform from that point of view alone.

  • ZDNet?  Taken with a grain of salt....

  • Yes it's quite correct. Although it would be better to use the more common nomenclature of Logical Processors, where there are four in a four core No Hyperthreading, the first on the right being LP ze

I think it's probably worth noting in this discussion that WIndows 7 64-bit is still Lockheed-Martin's officially recommended OS for Prepar3D.   Regards

If windows 10 users are a small percentage of total windows users as of now, why would driver and development support be confined to Windows 10?

Windows 10 isn't the minority user base you keep saying it is. This is after only 1 year and will take a surge towards the end of the month as people grab their last chance of a free upgrade. It only increases as every new pc comes with 10.

These links show overall market share.

Remember the bulk of those will be business systems who won't change from 7 for years so this link is to give more of a bias to home user/gaming computers. I know not everyone uses steam but a lot do and it is a useful data source.

Windows 7 will be around for a while but there is no doubt that 10 is the future and is being embraced right across the pc user spectrum. New hardware and drivers are focusing on windows10 compatibility, they aren't confined to it but they are certainly concentrating on it.

You are right that there is no reason to rush away from Windows 7 but you can't keep denying the fact the 10 has really taken off.

To answer the original question, in my view there is little performance gain to be had in p3d but as a platform it is a huge leap forward in all other areas.

Having spent the last week or so doing a clean install of Win10 I'm very happy with the result.

No, upgrading from Win7 or Win8 in itself will not provide a speed boost, but a CLEAN install will.

I did make a single change to my P3D install that resulted in a very noticiable improvement - nothing to do with Win10, more of making the right choice with a CLEAN install. I installed UTX 2 instead of Orbx Vector.

As a gamer and also as a business user my belief is that as a gamer there are now real benefits in taking advantage of the free upgrade. If you don't want the free upgrade then you can do whatever you want. As a business user I'll stick with Win7 until needs dictate the change. Bottom line for me is Win10 at home with DirectX 12 and XBox support etc and Win 7 at work for backward compatibility with line of business applications. A figure you might be interested in is that Steam are reporting more Win10 users than Win7. The number of users using a product you can't buy is not relevant.

howevr

I guess if you want to cover both bases you could do the free upgrade to Win10 which would write the Win10 licence info to the motherboard.

Then roll back to Win7 until sometime in the future you decide to reinstall Win10 which presumably you would not have to pay for since your motherboard already has that licence installed.

If windows 10 users are a small percentage of total windows users

Steam also very recently announced that almost half of it's users (which is a staggering number in itself) were using Windows 10 and it's growing fast mostly at Windows 7 expense. Certainly not all, but still a large majority of the issues with Windows 10 aren't issues at all but stem more user error than anything.

Sure, I would like that link to show you how to upgrade/update to Windows 10 without all that spyware, bloatware that MS includes.

However I have been having problems updating from Win 7 to Win10... at around 20% through the update, my machine restarts and says reverting back to my old windows. I'm not sure why it keeps doing this. I think it's because I've moved the default My Documents folder to a different drive maybe?

As a progressive IT person. Windows 10 is the only way. I rarely ever see under 30fps in any situation

I won't at this point, but I've been gaming for long enough, and have hung on to old OS's in the past to know how driver support does goes down the drain. If you only sim, its not such an issue I guess.

Display driver downloads for Win10 outnumber Win7 by over 50% currently.

That does not mean anything bad, or less than optimal will occur if you happen to use Win8 or Win10. Maybe its just a case of LM needing to update their system requirements, which are always a bit of a nonsense at the best of times.

Win10 and Nvidia 368.81 seems pretty blooming fine for me..... no glitches, crashes, or poor performance here.... shrug :/

Oh I love my windows 7 and will be staying as long as it is supported.

If this link is anything to go by i will be Ok for another 4 years  "hopefully"

And in 4 years you will most likely have a new PC by then, with a monthly subscription to Windows 10 that you can conveniently pay with your credit card,.
