REX Worldwide Airports HD Released - Bitmap resolution?

Featured Replies

I am thrilled, great addon no fps issues and no vas issues excellent

Same here...have flown into many default and 'three letter' airports. All my choices for terminal (regional), hangars, sheds, etc, look really good.  I have set my plane down in a few like Bangor, Maine, and really love how my choice for the main terminal looks.  Baggage handling (my choice of white color) vehicles are active, and move around the A.I. plane.  Jet ways...look great, and way better than default.

For the money spent...this has certainly juiced up all those old crappy white and black default blocks they called terminals and out buildings.  Markings, signage, painted surfaces all look, clear, and are easy to see from coming off off the turn-off from the active.  Corrugated slide-doors (for my choice of large and medium hangars) are very well done, etc.

I think that some are thinking that this will give you at least the viewage of ORBX Free and or Payware.  It doesn't..but what it does..is totally ramps up the immersion factor for many, many airports that you will fly over...perhaps land at, or intentionally place yourself at for your FBO.

Installed the largest texture setting for all my choices.

You need to have as high a graphic setting as you can run, to get the full benefit, visual objects, etc.

I used the DOWNLOAD Manager option on the REX STORE site, and also a stream of 5 downloads.  Had all my downloads in 5 minutes or less.  You need to be connected (and allowed to be connected by this product...via your malware whatever...) for the purpose of first-run registration.  After that, you are good to go.  There are many choices within each of the main building or feature headings. You can build themes such as for small, regional, medium, large fields...etc.  Depends on what type of flying you are about to do....what airports you will operate out of.

Injecting textures takes all of 15 seconds...and you are ready to fly...

The 20 some airports that are more detailed within FSX/P3D are not default.  They were customized by the Flight Sim team.  We stated very clearly that this is for the default.  We are looking to enhance those airports in the next update.

Everything looks great at the standard airports. However, this is the first time I have heard about this and I watched the Twitch announcement. Where was this mentioned? Also, what is the ETA for the update?

given release might suggest that we are not quite the 'minority niche' that people take us for?

No David, we're very very much a niche market ... with 6GB product from REX, it would NOT take many customers to crash a server or trigger extreme throttling.  You'll run into the same issues with Orbx, PMDG, etc. etc. on initial release day.  With that said, I had no problem downloading and installing REX HD Airports product ...

25 secs to purchase from REX site

Use my existing REX Download Manager, selected product, input my product key, selected Download Server 2

9 files downloaded in a little less than 10 minutes

Installation took less than 1 minute

Run the HD Airports configuration and selected my textures from various categories and hit install texture for each category (didn't make a theme)

Fired up P3D at HECA, I see my selected buildings and runway/taxiway textures

Not sure what all the issues are about - job well done REX, meets my expectations at the $25 price point.  Seems to be working fine from purchase to install and usage.  VAS test at HECA is about the same (within 40MB) as default airports - with my extreme settings about 2.6GB VAS used ... HD airport use more VRAM as expected but VAS usage is negligible relative to default airports.

If I have one criticism is that the taxi lines and some runway lines (edges) are too narrow which does induce "sparkles" (precision artifacts from AA method) ... this can be adjusted at the texture level and I hope REX will take a look on how to do that rather than forcing SGSS AA usage.  Otherwise, no complaints, good job REX.

Cheers, Rob.

EDIT: only other criticism for the purchase/install/usage aspect was that I had to input my serial key 3 times (download manager, installer, and in the HD Airport configuration product).

I have to disagree with #2 above...VAS is not affected by other processes running outside FSX/P3D (nor by the amount of physical RAM present)--each process runs in its own VAS.  fps and fluidity certainly can be affected by other processes that may be running, but VAS issues (OOMs) are not caused by too many other processes running on a machine.

For folks using ORBX regions, remember that there are thousands of airports in those regions that have been enhanced by the ORBX designers, and many/most of those replace the stock buildings with objects from ORBX libraries, so you should not expect to see any changes to those "enhanced default" airports by virtue of buffing up the stock textures, since they don't use them.  If you open your FTX_XX_xxx05_SCENERY\scenery folders you'll see a large number of ADEX files, one for each enhanced airport...in the Northern California region alone I counted 713 of them.

I'm curious myself as to what the actual VAS impact is, since stock building textures for the default airports we overfly are often 256x256, so a 1024x1024 "standard" texture in this add-on is still a sixteen-fold increase in texture size, and there are tens of thousands of those default airports dotting the virtual world we fly over.  This looks like a good experiment for someone...baseline without the WW HD add-on, then measure the actual difference.  This is likely a bigger issue for FSX users, since once those textures are loaded during overflights, the sim isn't good about releasing the memory (P3D does).  For some people who run complex add-ons, HD clouds, etc, the added VAS consumption, even if relatively small, might prove significant, even at standard definition.  Personally, I would like to see some numbers derived from third-party testing.

Regards

Is there any way we can get rid of those ADEX files so that we can get the updated Worldwide HD textures?

 yeah well done, love it!

Our next release will be Sky Force soon, then right after we will be working on an update for this.

o yeah cant wait , will it be before 2017?

is there a plan to mipmap textures (or whatever is needed to get anti aliasing working without need to use SGSAA)?

I just purchased downloaded and set up . The whole process only took about 20 minutes. No issues at all so far. I have tested a few airports and it looks great thumbs up Rex!!!!!

I was able to download all the links separately as Reed suggested without issue.  Pretty quick download and fairly painless install except for some serial number issues.  Took entering it several times for it to accept it but eventually worked.  I have only looked at one default airport so far and things look very good (using default size textures for now).  It would be nice to see new control tower textures in the future as they now stand out a little more (in a bad way!). Looking forward trying all the different texture combos!!

As I said in our forum, the textures are mipped correctly, but what you are experiencing could be the combination of bump/spec. We are looking into it and will include any changes in the first update.

This is why they developed Worldwide Airport HD. It brings the default airports up a few levels so we start to fly to some of them. If your just limiting yourself to pay ware scenery then your just limiting yourself.

Exactly. This is precisely why I will buy this product. I don't fly to default airports at the moment but that's simply because they are so awful. I would love to be able to fly to 'second division' airports like KOAK or KJAX or to major international airports like FACT and HECA where the payware offerings are poor.

I was able to get the default airports with Worldwide HD textures into the ORBX regions (KBVS is what I worked on) by using ADE to get the default and putting that above everything in the Scenery Library.

Looks amazing. GO REX!!!

SWEET!!! Thank you.  How did you go about doing that?

I downloaded Airport Design Editor. After you get it installed, File -> Open Stock Airport. You type in the airport and before you open, below it will tell you the file path and the .BGL file - something like "APX15150.bgl".

Go to that folder path, grab every file with "15150" in it, and put that in a folder structure like this in the main P3D directory:

\Addon Scenery\KPDX_Test\scenery\

Dump everything in that scenery folder that contained "APX15150.bgl".

Add scenery pointing to that folder like you would a normal third party scenery. Put it above the ORBX region.

Now, everything looks normal around the airport in regards to the ORBX region (this was for KBVS), but the airport is default and has the Worldwide HD textures.

Sorry for the quick response, my nearly 1 year old daughter is trying to help me type!
