Dovetail Announce first official FSW DLC coming!

Featured Replies

I remember watching a live stream where Stephen Hood himself had expressed interest in the Dash 8 and would love to see an aircraft such as that make itself into FSW. I can't remember which one but it was shortly after truesky was released. Either way I cant wait for what the future holds for add-on aircraft in FSW and this is good sign.

Yes, please.

We need a Dash-8 100 aircraft for all the short runways in Norway, BC and Alaska.......

A Dash 8 or a Saab 340B would have been exciting.

I´d prefer a Dash 8, but let´s give them time. I prefer they give us a really nice Dash 8 (Or whatever larger bird they have in mind) in 6 months than giving us a poor Dash 8 tomorrow.

Hi All

FSW being an early access program (which may or may not be further developed) is it fair to sell DLC (another GA aircraft) already? This probably means that heavy metal aircraft will also be paid for DLC. My hope was that Dovetail would at least include various aircraft types in addition to GA aircraft as default, during early access and during later Beta testing. Please correct me if I, wrong.

Hi johannoli4. The Just Flight Piper III for FSW is mainly a development project by Just Flight and Dovetail Games to create an SDK which can be used by all add-on developers for FSW. There will be a range of default aircraft in FSW just like any other sim, but not before the SDK is completed - hopefully - before Christmas.

to elaborate on Tim's reply...

I wouldn't worry about the 'may or may not be further developed' bit, that is a fairly standard disclaimer for software which gets put out before it is finished and which a company charges for. It is more or less covering the 'well, it might not work very well at this point' disclaimer for those who choose to adopt it early, and whilst it might indicate an element of risk if one is talking about an unknown or relatively new and inexperienced software developer, Dovetail Games is certainly not one of those. They've been in business for almost ten years, have over one hundred employees, are funded by private investors and have worked with loads of big name Flight simulator developers such as Flight 1, who were among their many partners for the development of FSX Steam Edition, so they have a history of getting the job done.

Thus we can be assured Dovetail is in it for the long haul, they have specialised in making platforms for which additional revenue can be gained by the sale of DLC, and they are very experienced in doing that. So in creating FSW, this effectively gives them two bites at the cherry;  they gain revenue from the sale of the host platform and gain revenue from the sales of stuff for it too. They are in control of where things go for the host platform and can control how easy it is to develop stuff for, this is a good thing because they have in recent months quite clearly demonstrated that where they want to go, is to forge ahead of the competition by adding a lot of new and innovative features.

with regard to selling DLC for an early access title, sure, it is fair to sell anything, nobody forces anyone to buy it, and we can all make our own decisions on whether to do so. As Tim pointed out, Just Flight have worked with Dovetail for years, both with train simulation add-ons and aeroplane simulation add-ons, so they have a good relationship which is also helped by the fact that they are actually located not that far from one another in the UK. Just Flight has its own in house development team as well as acting as brokers for other DLC companies, and also commissions TPDs to make stuff for them too, they are in fact one of the largest and most experienced developers of DLC for simulations in the world because of that. It is for this reason among many that Dovetail are working with Just Flight, in order to tailor the Software Development Kit for Flight Sim World so it delivers what a developer might want and find easy to use. Just Flight have in recent years really upped their game in terms of what they develop, so they are a good choice as a partner from that standpoint too.

As far as adding jets is concerned, I suspect they will probably get one in there, quite possibly one from Just Flight's own range, such as their 737, A320 or maybe something more esoteric, such as their DC-8, DC-10 or BAC 1-11. There are many options they could go for. Similarly, I would not mind betting  they will get some kind of helicopter in there as well. But who knows? They may also offer such things as an expansion pack with a few aircraft and some scenery and missions, which is something Microsoft did with FSX when they released the Acceleration add-on for it, and this would seem a likely scenario given Dovetail's desire to sell DLC. Certainly I would think most users would be happy enough to throw a few quid at an add-on which maybe included a few samples of what DLC can bring to the base simulation.

You could have said the same about Aces Studio back in the day and look what happened to them! That said, I do think that DTG genuinely intend to make a go of it with FSW.

Well, that is true, but much of what saw ACES and MSFS go was the switch from Bill not being at the helm (since he was smart enough to realise that MSFS was a great PR loss leader, and he is a big aviation buff), to Steve Ballmer, who apart from coming across as being a bit mental, which didn't help, was faced with the unenviable task of choosing many things to cut the development funding for, in order to deliver more profits after a few debacles as a result of MS dipping their toes into the mobile phone and tablet markets, without much success but with quite a lot of lost investment cash. He did achieve that improved bottom line, which doubtless pleased investors, but he made Microsoft a bit less soulful an entity when they waved goodbye to making Flight Simulator.

By contrast, Dovetail Games has many simulation enthusiasts at board level and unlike Microsoft, the development of sims and games is their main reason for existing, so it is unlikely they'd make a similar decision to cull a product they are way down the line with development on.

The Arrow III is fully integrated with the FSW cold and dark feature, just like the default FSW aircraft.

Yeah, just like the prohibition to sell outside steam. Just Flight is really sad they couldn't sell on their own store...

Come on, it doesn't hurt to stick to the facts, everybody keeps spreading those rumors and they're all proving to be fake.

Where are all the people that said 3rd party developers would only be able to sell through Steam? Some people just love to cause problem's and give out wrong information. Guess what, you no like, you no have to buy! I am coming over to your house and pressing the BUY button and force you to get this DLC, NOT! Or any other purchase on the internet :)

That was a little harsh and I apologize!

So what is the official policy now?

I notice my UK2000 airports now have an option to install directly into FSW so I guess selling on Steam is not (or no longer) a requirement?
