Kai Tak Revisited

Featured Replies

At one time there was a lengthy thread on the desires to have a working VHHX.I do realize many have several different 3rd party scenery's that can be Frame Rate intensive at times and there are AFCAD's available. In the past month I have researched many pages about Kai Tak so decided to use all of FS9's scenery resources and construct a Frame friendly VHHX.Some of you realize that I also write code to manipulate the behavior of AI Aircraft so I added a proper IGS13 curved approach for the AI Planes allowing them to make the turn to final and align to runway 13. Is VHHX still alive in the hearts and mines of simmer's or should we put it to bed?

It's still alive here. I fly the IGS often and have never found anything to compare to it. I don't think Kai Tak will ever be put to bed by those of us who have been there. Any chance we can get you to upload your creation to the library? I know that many of us would appreciate it. A framerate-friendly version has been needed for a long, long time.Doug

Hi Jim,I think that there will still be a fair number of us that are interested but let them say so here! I did some work on this and I suppose I got about halfway through it before having to put it to one side for a while in order to get on with other things that need to be done. Some of the work I already have done is based on existing works with smaller textures that still look pretty good, while other parts use default objects like ships, power station etc. to help frame rates. Frames are much improved but still may not be quite enough for those who expect more than 10fps in the heaviest areas. I have already got to the point where I have separated the bgl's for almost every different types of objects, so mixing and matching should be quite easy. If you are interested in what I have done so far, please email me [email protected] as otherwise I don't think I'll ever finish what I initially set out to achieve. On the other hand, maybe I could still do some further work if the load is lightened!

Absolutely my favorite approach! Please, oh please share your work with us!Mark

JimFor sure Kai Tak rules! With your experience, I'm looking forward to what you might come up with. I suppose you have seen my own Kai Tak pages, but if not click on the banner below to dig around.Charlie, how goes it? I thought you'd been quiet for a while!By the way, don't miss Alex Nicolson's wartime Kai Tak, uploaded yesterday. You can't run it in tandem with the regular extended-R13 Kai Tak, of course, but it's a fun alternative when flying the oldies. It fits well on the SRTM mesh available, and is fun to fly if you follow the correct procedures.MarkMark "Dark Moment" BeaumontVP Fleet, DC-3 AirwaysTeam Member, MAAM-SIM[a href=http://www.swiremariners.com/cathayhk.html" target="_blank]http://www.paxship.com/maamlogo2.jpg[/a]

Count me in, I think once it's finished and uploaded, it will prove to be very popular, particually if you succeed in addressing all the issues that you are working on.I hope you press on and finish the project.CheersPete :)

Hi Jim,what a great idea!I'd be happy to provide a local SRTM v2 mesh file if that would be of help to your project. I don't think there's anything better than SRTM available but compiled at LOD10 it should provide you with a stable base of the surrounding terrain.Cheers, Holger

Count me in! ...it certainly would be fun to see the AI attempt the approach as well as oneself! :)... I don't suppose you could make the AI traffic fly the Rwy 05 approach at Funchal (LPMA) :-hmmm

@MarkAll my research that started several months ago was from your site. From there I picked apart every single link I could to gather all the info I am working with. Your site has been a very valuable resource!!!I am using more realistic FS9 xml coded Terminals and buildings from pictures and earlier FS2000/2002 version 3rd party scenery. I have completed the mapping/xml coding of the Jetways, parking stands, GA, Cargo, taxiways, new taxiway signs, wind socks, ground ILS antenna's, fuel farm, ground support vehicles, new Tower/Beacon, etc. What surprized me was all the different approaches that Kai Tak had for RWY 13. We only hear about the IGS13 approach but I added both the DME/VOR and the NDB CHEUNG CHAU low visibility approaches (added CC TERMINAL_NDB which was left out of FS9) for RWY 13. The VOR/DME 13 is actually harder to fly then the IGS 13 approach. To date I have written many approaches (listed) that any GPS will display and fly accurately when coupled to the autopilot (if needed). This includes the IGS 13 approach which also the AI Planes are now flying very accurately both above and below 3 mile (VMC/IMC) visibility . IGS 13 (LDA 13 default FS9 terminology)ILS 31GPS 31 with ANPAT, CUTLE, KILOG, TATH and TAMOT quadrant waypoint transistionsVOR/DME 13 with a CHAU transistion CHEUNG CHAU (CC) NDB to Stonecutters (SC) NDB 13 Approach All proper Published Missed Approaches with ATC vectors that do not conflict with VHHH.The LDA 13 has both vectors to final and the CHEUNG CHAU VOR 8,000 ft entry altitude transistion (for User Aircraft) assigned by the default FS9 ATC. This also requires a minimum of one circuit hold for proper altitude stabalization to properly overfly VHHH (altitude restriction) when descending out of the GOLF waypoint (6,000 ft.) which I coded into the FS9's database. I have tested many AI Heavies (FS9, PAI, FSP, AIA, Evolve, etc) for the IGS13 and only a few land slightly to the left of the RWY center line. I am also including most of the MRAI FP's that were current for all AI Traffic when VHHX closed. These FP's (edited) do not interfer with exsisting FP's for VHHH but it does make for a crowded sky over Hong Kong so keeping FPS low is very important to me.The only other major issue that took time to work out was the arrival and missed approach procedures for both the AI Traffic and the User Aircraft in respect to VHHH and VHHX. Careful planning for altitude at the FAF and missed turn direction vectors/altitude as instructed by ATC has proven very successful.Combine all this with the added airport scenery which is FS9 default from other parts of the world (if needed) and FPS are staying about the same (excluding additional AI Plane LOD's). I do need to test against a good SRTM mesh. Any recommendatons? @CharlieThanks for the info. If I run into something that is not availble from within the FS9 default scenery I will give you a shout.

@HolgerI was hoping you would jump in here and offer a good SRTM base mesh. I don't know if I still have your e-mail from when we conversed on your original LOWI (that I wrote curved approaches for). Will have to look but I am sure I can find it from a upload.@EdI am not familiar with the rwy 05 approach at LPMA but will take a look and see what the charts show when I finish this project.

Hi Jim,I sent you a PM through the forum board.Cheers, Holger

Jim, and Charlie...Fantastic to hear that you are/have been, working on Kai tak :) I too would love to see a good FPS friendly version for FS9....thank you for continue to keep that flame going! Are you looking to improve the surrounding envirnments: autogen, and 'real' buildings for instance? It would be great to have the area looking more 'colourful' in that unique Hong Kong way, with all the advertising hoardings on and around the buildings, and maybe include a few of the real buildings: the new museums, the Peninsular Hotel, the Star Ferry terminals (and have a couple of the ferries crossing the harbour!). FlightSoft did this quite well, but ruined the whole effect by adding for whatever mad reason, that awfull water, and 'mesh', allong with some dreadful terrain textures!! I wish there was a way of just taking the landmarks/buildings and discarding the rest, and using those parts! Thanks again though for your continued work on Kai tak, and I sincerely look forward to seeing them in the library here :)

Even though Kai Tak is closed in reality, it will never be for me in FS where I still miss a decent rendition to give that great approach the tribute it deserves.Andreas

Kai Tak's Rwy 13 approach was fantastic. I would love to see a new version :)

I don't know if it's of interest to you but I have a copy of IGS RWY13 dated 25 April 1996 which shows a hand-written amendment of the heights at the Outer Marker. They are shown as 1731(1716) compared with the printed values of 1777(1762)
