April 21, 200620 yr There is so much going on in the jet addon world. FeelThere has a 777 right around the corner. PMDG announced a new 737NG for FSX and also an A320. Another developer is working on a great looking CRJ and LDS is working on their 757. There are others I haven't mentioned.I love to acquire the latest and greatest programs and this creates a weird scenario for me. I can enjoy many aircraft on a superficial level and never learn how to master any one of them. On the other hand, I can just buy a couple and try to perfect my knowledge and understanding of those and feel like I've really mastered something. What leads to the greater enjoyment? I guess that has to be answered by all addon junkies. Curt Branch
April 21, 200620 yr What's funny is I won't be getting any of those (don't do tubeliners), but I feel your pain. I have most GA payware and while I enjoy it, I rarely use most of them. I have started to try and stick with a certain aircraft for longer periods. I find designing to be more enjoyable lately and spend more time in Gmax than FS, LOL Regards, MichaelKDFWhttp://www.calvirair.com/mcpics/mcdcvabanner.jpgCalVirAir International Best, Michael KDFW
April 21, 200620 yr Lol, if people were to really "fly what they buy" addon developers would be out of business in a month. But I suspect that most simmers really only get a superficial familiarity with their aircraft, then they rush on to the next release, then the next. I mean, in the spirit of "as real as it gets", you'd be tooling around with your little Cessna trainer until you get your license, then move on from there; just like in the real world. Thank the lord, FS9 is only a game, so I can pretend to fly 747s into Courchevel. ricardo
April 21, 200620 yr I am the kind of customer developers don't like very much cause I exercise a lot of discipline when buying an add-on. It's not easy nowadays with all those beauties released in the last year and especially after all those announcements for the following months. But I don't see much sense in buying things I will use only once or twice just because I would succumb to the first impulse after reading some advertisement.Right now I have only 2 aircraft, one a famous GA, the other a famous airliner, and I enjoy learning to fly them in the most realistic way I can. I would agree that having, say, four top payware aircraft is a reasonable limit, and my credit card shares this opinion.-regardsN.
April 21, 200620 yr I am in partial agreement with your thoughts but please don't shout any louder, LOL.I am fortunate to be around in such a great climate that is flightsimming today with all the talented addons to enjoy. It really is a great environment now.I think the weakness that I and probably most others, suffer from is the 'hype' within these forums that I find very hard to resist the next addon aircraft, I find by reading here I want them all, hehe.Dave T. .........On the Devon Riviera and active 'FlightSim User's Group' member at http://www.flightsimgrpuk.free-online.co.uk/http://www.captainsim.com/user/dl/c130/c130_captain.gif Dave Taylor
April 21, 200620 yr Dave you are so right, with the announcement of fsx I thought "I won't buy any more add ons now" and spent the next couple of months updating my AI - then what happens!!! I buy PIC737 & C130 to go with my existing pmdg, lvld and atr hanger and to top it all I got EDDF mega airport which has now made me realise that I "need" other quality airports, once you've got a few FlyTampa, Sim Wings UK2000 etc. the defaults just spoil a good landing ;-) Must lock the credit card away..Mike
April 21, 200620 yr I also got into the situation of always craving the next one.... But alas - I was saved by the relatively normal preformance of my laptop. As all of these addons get more and more complicated, bigger and hog more and more resources my PC got to the stage that the new ones take just so long to load the textures or to change view that they just got removed again cos they spoil the enjoyment of the sim. Due to work and the wife I don't have hours to spend on massivly complicated FMCs or such so thats even less purchases.Basically as the addons have got better and more complex, I buy less and less...
April 21, 200620 yr Unfortunately I ended up upgrading my pc to run all these add ons - liquid cooled-overclocked processor & graphics card, fast memory & HD - must control the urge:-hah Any one else started thinking about the pmdg a320??
April 21, 200620 yr I have really cut back on what I buy, because I have so many. It has to be a something really unique and high quality for me to buy now. But, hey, I think it is a great problem to have, since it allows so many options on how you want to fly and allows varied experiences in lots of different types of aircraft and enviornments. That is why I love this hobby.
April 21, 200620 yr The trick is, once you acquire an FS9 'RUN' program whether payware or free, how do you organize yourself to be able to enjoy all these programs all the time? I know some of those programs are accessed and displayed on the menu bar of FS9.....as a matter of fact the menu bar is more like two bars now...I wish I knew how to condense that to only one bar.Abe
April 21, 200620 yr I used to be an "addon plane explorer". When there was a new one coming out I wanted to check it out. There are certain kinds that I am not interested in for FS, such as military aircrafts or helos. However over the time, I find myself reducing my FS hangar to a small blend of premium products in the market. I have 3 piston singles, 1 turboprop single, 1 piston twin, 1 turbprop twin & 4 jetliners (bigger and smaller). That's all I fly and still way more than what I have the time to learn down to the last details. The last thing I'd want to add is a well done business jet with a real FMC.In real life, most pilots fly the same class of aircrafts if not the same type, and they fly in the same area or on the same routes most of the time. Some consider the large variety of possibilities FS has to offer a distracting diviation from reality while some consider it a unique advantage. For me, I spend most of my FS time flying in a few general areas where I have real world charts for in aircrafts I'm familiar with, with good weather and ATC engines. Personally I feel this way I can gain and learn the most from FS that benefits my real life experience as well.Jason Zhang JasonFAA CPL SEL MEL IR CFI-I MEI AGI
April 21, 200620 yr I too am much more selective with my addon purchases now. Even though there are lots of quality addons out there, I have to limit myself to a few. I just don't have the time to learn and stay current on a bunch of different planes all at once. I make certain to limit myself to a handful of addons which I know I will spend a lot of time with. I have to many addons sitting around collecting virtual dust, not because they aren't great, but because I don't have the time to learn and re-learn all the stuff I forgot. For me, I have no problem picking up a new plane and learning how it works. The frustration comes in when I learn an addon, then stop using it for a bit and forget half the stuff I learned. Price of getting old(er!) :)Lately I pretty much only fly light GA aircraft. I used to enjoy the commercial heavies quite a bit, but it is hard to find the proper time to fly. ------------------------- Craig from KBUF
April 21, 200620 yr Here's where my limited budget helps :) There's a lot of stuff I'd love to get but I do not - just will not spend beyond a certain internal tolerance limit - period...except of course that time Avsim seduced me into buying the 744 - day after day, that gorgeous profile at the top of the page, that 'come hither' hump and big '747-400' daring me to take her on and learn her intricacies - I finally caved :)regards,Markhttp://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a319/mar.../sup_banner.jpgXPHomeSP2/FS9.1/3.2HT/1024mb/X700pro256 Regards, Mark
April 21, 200620 yr Author "The last thing I'd want to add is a well done business jet with a real FMC."Interesting thread, seems we are all a bit spoiled with our abundance:-)We are working on our CX Version 2.0 with FMS and a few other fine features:-)
April 21, 200620 yr Hi Curt...I can relate to you wanting to buy the latest addons but unlike you I live in denial. Wasn't going to purchase and more addons until FSX was released but then decided what the heck..I'll keep buying addons for FS 9 and wont upgrade to FSX. Looking forward to Cloud 9 Los Angeles being released this week and when FSX is released..WELLL ..Like I previously stated..I live in denial when it comes to purchasing addons...Regards...TH
