Asobo claims they are using a type of raytracing that doesn't require RT cores so I'm very curious as to how they pulled that off.

That is not what they are claiming. They said their engine uses a form of reflection model that looks nearly as good as RT without actually being RT.

You're right, my mistake!

As far as I understand (which isn’t very far), there is a proper way to do hardware ray tracing, and a sort of cheating way. Almost all implementations of it so far use the cheating way, only a very small handful have done it properly - minecraft is one of those, I think. I’ve seen a couple of games using it on my brother’s PC and it just looked slightly different rather than mindblowingly better. It’s not liked when we moved to such radical things like coloured lighting in the 90s.

Screen space (faking it)  vs true ray tracing

I think this is just the reaction to expect when actual first class modern studio talent and AAA money gets injected into our favorite hobby here.

We’ve been so conditioned to think the best we could do was adding on to the old old engines of the past..

Even the most ardent XP fan has to admit this has got to be opening some eyes at LR. Maybe not Austin - he has his money - but for the future they have a ton of work to do in order to stay relevant long term.

LR? Do you mean LM?

I'm sure he means Laminar Research, as he's talking about X-Plane.

I know they mentioned hurricanes previously, but did they ever touch on tornadoes?

No, but considering that they have tornadoes in their "FUEL" racing game, they already know how to do it!
