Let it snow! Official snow season in MSFS

Featured Replies

After seeing the breathtaking 'snow video' I am craving for seasons to be in the sim even more than before. However, until Microsoft/Asobo actually state it's in the sim I am keeping my fingers crossed. The video has emphasised the importance and beauty of having seasons ion the sim.

I guess that what we see in this latest video, is just the new Microsoft Weather app using the Bing Map as source.

It may surprise you to learn that a cricket match in Buxton, Derbyshire, England in June 1975 was stopped because of snow. Buxton is 1,000ft above sea level in the Peak District at 53°N. The next day it had all gone.

Easter varies from mid March to mid April and snow can fall at Easter more than at Christmas here in the UK. Just some trivia for you. 😉

I did say normally. And give or take.  But for the most part. Winterish is when that happens. So...we have seasons.

Current score in today’s play is FS2020 35. P3D 5. x-plane 0.

That’s why I said it was a bit of trivia. 😉 Buxton is 20 miles ESE of Manchester where it would have been raining so even if we could time travel back to 1975 and fly over the cricket field it would be wet, not white. 🌧️

I'm just as impressed by the snow video as the rest of you, but in saying that I must admit in all the sims I have had on the PC during the years, I fly aprox.90% of the time in the summer season. I'll probably fly some more in the winter season knowing what it can look like, but summer will always be my favorite season. And yes I prefer going to the beach instead of going skiing 🙂

Same here, but it's good for long haul, departing say YSSY (summer) and landing EGLL (winter).

Well, if I can win the prize at the next trivia night I attend if this comes up, I'm donating half to you! 😛

Why would a weather app need dynamic snow?

Well, snow per se is not a "season," but rather is one possible indicator of "winter".  You are correct that this video clip is simply a time-lapsed transition from no snow to several inches of snow.

However, it is an indicator that they intend to have seasons. The "snow" appears to be generated procedurally which will allow for different depths and coverage.

If they can have snow accumulate, can they also have it flood from rain?

I see no reason why they couldn't.

I might be wrong on this, BUT, you normally get snow in the season called Winter. Give or take. Not in the season called Summer. Normally.  Give or take.

Actually no, you get snow in all kinds of climactic scenarios, for example as a NORM at altitude or more northerly or sotherly latitudes. Again, as I said, a season comprises of many elements... every season has it's own lighting conditions, weather patterns,  seasonal foliage colour etc. Just adding snow to a video does not comprise "seasons" it just comprises one element of a season. Snow, is "weather" not seasons.

Clearly they are working on seasons, they said they would, no surprise there, and they have shown us ONE element of a winter season in mid latitudes. But again... the video does not in any was confirm seasons and we could still have no seasons, some elements of seasons or all seasons at launch. But yes, we will get them eventually they have already said so.
