Another kind of "market crash"

Featured Replies

I'm sure many of you experienced 'Black Monday' on Oct. 19, 1987, as it was the single largest stock decline in U.S. history.  People saw their investments just evaporate, and it took a long time to rebuild their savings.  As happy as I am with Microsoft and Asobo, I'm feeling the pain of another kind of investment crash, that being my P3D airport investments.  Did all that airport money just disappear with no value going forward?  The thought of that is really depressing, and I hope somehow the value of those purchases can carry over to the new sim.  Maybe, just perhaps, the default airports will be so good that I won't need payware to the same extent, but I doubt that at the moment.  So, what do you all think?

I believe a lot of developers (at least the reputable ones) will upgrade their offerings for the new MSFS2020, and charge only an upgrade fee.  I doubt we will have to buy everything at full price again.  But, at the same time, I don’t expect them to be free.  Overall, I think it will be worth it in the end.  Before FSX, this was the norm every time a new version came out.

That was perfectly understandable to me. And I'm neither english nor polish. 😛

I just counted that I have installed approximately 225 add-on airports in FSX, 172 of them smaller GA or freeware airports.  I have at one time or another flown into and out of each of them.  I waited for v4 to upgrade to P3D, but then found out that many scenery library objects used in my collection of airports would not present in v4.  Have no idea what will happen with MSFS in 2020.

IMO, add-on purchases (particularly from a home-use perspective) aren't "investments" in any sense other than to increase your enjoyment at a point in time.

To bring further the car analogy, you can't expect to use your existing spark plugs in a new Tesla...😉

Would not hold my breath for that.

I really understand that everybody is sad about, if all the addons will mostly not work in FS2020. But it is a completely new sim and you paid of thm to use them with P3D.

And - on the other hand - no one is forced to switch to FS2020. Sure, P3D will die at one point in the future. But if you want to get more "value" out of your addons, just use them longer with P3D.

If you want to switch to FS2020 ... well, you know what happens.

No-one should look on buying addons for ANY simulator as investments, only for enjoyment and leisure.

I do not understand that allegory at all.

Other than your stock savings that lost their value in a stock market crash, you have already been using your P3D airport investments for years (depending on how long you are already simming) and you will be able to still use them until you switch to MSFS. So that airport money is not at all just disappearing. You already had and currently still have the benefit from it.

I do not find that thought depressing at all.  For me all my addon investments have long paid out for me because I have already been using them for a while. When I bought addons for P3D I never expected them to last forever. Sim versions come and go, new sims emerge, just a question of time.

I am glad that time is not so far away any more.

I keep wondering why people worry so much about this. Sure, I have spent more money than I would like to admit on a ton of addons for P3D myself, but I don't consider that wasted money whatsoever. These addons have brought me years of enjoyment flying in P3D which was absolutely worth it. The P3D time I enjoyed with all the addons won't lose its value when I move to MSFS at some point. The world moves on and finally the flight sim industry does too.

Heck,  I can't even include my home as an investment anymore if the market doesn't get better. And so glad there are others that believe as I do that addons aren't investments. Much like anything to do with computers. Its changing too fast to keep up sometimes and I know my 8088 is worth nothing. Buy and use sparingly, at least in my case as I have no need to "collect"
