Disappointed in Alpha/Beta tester selection

I agree with the topic, applied for testers from the first moment, hour, and seeing people, who have been accepted, that have no idea how an airplane works or the dynamics of a simulator, turns out to be unfair.

It's like seeing a very good woman with the wrong guy 🙂

I know people that have been playing World of Warcraft for years , not my cup of tea but they love it online all the time, streaming and online gaming is the future for them.

I played Everquest for years, made real life friends, helped people with personal issues, presided over marriages.....

Many people there (especially crafters!) would be interested in hearing how we all cumulatively had/have the attention span of gnats.....

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

Flight simulation is relatively boring for many people.

Driving a long haul truck is relatively boring, but a lot of people play trucking simulators.

Sailing a boat is boring, but lots of people play sailing sims.

"Watching grass grow" is boring, but farming simulators are popular.

I think people who are down on gamers have no idea what the gamers actually do.  First person shooters aren't the only things they play.

Sounds exactly like The Sims communities. Some people never played, they just made objects to use or built houses.  And some of the online friendships lasted years after the people stopped playing.

Asobo has an internal team of professional testers.  We just provided them some input.

And I understand that some were very qualified in the aviation domain on the MS side.

And maybe it will be one of the driving forces for MSFS, too.

The kind of multiplayer events that are possible with this title are mind-blowing. The recent community update mentioned a few of those, like city trips led by a professional guide:

Dividing the world into simmers and gamers makes no sense to me. I've played and play RPG, wargames, survival games, puzzle games, grand strategy games, construction games on my PC. Did I say that I was a simmer too ?

The question is, does it makes sense to test a complex game like FS20 with  a majority of people who has never been in contact with the genre before ?  The answer is : it depends what your goal is.

If the goal is to make a simmers dream as it was announced a year ago, the answer is no. If the goal is mostly to stress test the servers and make happy a population of gamers hungry for freebies, the answer is yes.

'm retired from the military (so you can rightfully assume I'm a trained and expert leader, manager and decision maker who has done all of these with lives on the line), so team work and what is good for the community is good for me is not only ingrained in everything I do.  Mind you I'm well aware that 50% of the people who read this will not ever come close to understanding how and why I think and make decisions and 49% of the rest think it's just plain strange that I as I do.  That's not condescending, that's reality.

Best wishes.

You're absolutely right. We do not deserve you.

A good number here seem to be confusing the people who are testing the alpha/beta with the you tubers/streamers that ms let have a preview copy so they can stream content.  Different groups.

Microsoft might very well have other motives to launch MS20, and stress test data streaming on those servers.
Maybe commercial use or perhaps other ones?

Flight simulator is a persistent online world. It makes sense to test the servers as any online application. I just hope the 16k testers was enough because this thing is going to get A LOT of traffic day one.

Semper Fi

The alpha testers were invited into the program primarily to load-test the server infrastructure with a large number of users, and to test the basic functionality of the software with a broad base of different computer hardware combinations (RAM, CPU and GPU). In terms of “bug hunting” the testers’ primary value was in finding and reporting major scenery errors, because the developers “can’t be everywhere”.

Real-world aviation knowledge or experience was really not relevant to the primary goal of the semi-public alpha test program. To be sure, there are a substantial number of testers who do have real-world aviation experience, and have been able to report bugs with accuracy and detail. In some cases, this may have revealed problems that Asobo was not aware of, but in most cases, it probably only served as confirmation of known issues.

Some of the YouTube reviewers were also in the alpha/beta test program, but most were not. I’m pretty sure the primary criteria for their selection was the popularity of their individual channels and the size of their subscriber base - not how much actual aviation knowledge they may (or may not) have.

Well, if you think about it, they absolutely must focus on pc specs and pc compositions when testing their sim. It is pretty crucial to iron out most of the bugs that will lead to crashes and poor performance. From the various YT videos it seems they have done a pretty good job at that. So thank you, testers, for being a part of that!

Now, because you were a tester and Asobo not asking you personally what you feel and want and need, doesn't mean that they haven't had a circle of more intimate testers that they lend their ears to more often. Like pilots. You dont need 17.000 pilots. You do need some, and especially type rated ones. You could probably also use physicists, meterologists, people from aerodynamics etc.

And then you have the mass testers to stress test and optimize the macros. And lastly, you have the rest of us who are totally jealous about you guys being in the beta 😉 JK, I'm glad you guys were in.

Oh, and I almost forgot. Perhaps they should have spent some more time testing their storefront. Seemed to be a poster here who had major difficulties downloading his 1gb of launcher. And the worst part is that MS support couldn't help him at all. Things like that certainly needs to be ironed out. Oh, and you dont need pilots for that either.
