August 19, 20205 yr After spending a few days with MSFS2020 I'm giving consideration to upgrading my P3D 4.5 to 5 while I await the maturing of the new platform. I'm listing out what the true cost and true hassle factors are going to be to see if I want to do this for what might be only a few quarters (or not.) Anyway, I started with ORBX, of which I have a large bucketload installed for V4.5. After spending some time reading their forums and support I believe I am getting a better idea of what it will involve. I'm looking to see if my conclusions are valid. It would appear I would have to buy another copy of ORBX Vector, but all my other sceneries that are, as of this writting, V5 compatible (many airports still are not after 4 months) should work. I read the process to move the complatible scneries over. Looks to be time consuming but not too difficult. I read a few support inquiries involving numerous folks who are having up to 10 minute reading delays getting their new Vectors data read by P3D after making a flight plan and before takeoff. ORBX supports only suggestion, from what I could see, is to disable vectors before making a flight plan, then reenabling it EACH time you wish to fly. No hope of a solution to the glitch seems to be forthcoming. Seems a bit clueggy. Gives me pause, but I do want to see if my perceptions of this process and state of affairs are valid. Appreciate any thoughts. Thanks!
August 19, 20205 yr I would start without Vector. V5 has updated terrain data and Vector IMHO is not actually required. Your other Orbx data can be transferred to V5 at no cost. Bert
August 19, 20205 yr It's been almost 2 months since HF2 for v5 dropped. I can't see it being that much longer before a full new version 5.1 is out. Do like I am and wait for that to avoid having to do reinstalls. Eric
August 19, 20205 yr Author Thanks Bert, Thanks Eric. Great advise. It's great to come here and get sound advise from those who have blazed the trail already. 😃 I have a list of add-ons to go through. No rush. I might be back with additional inquires. Appreciate the thoughtful assistance! Edited August 19, 20205 yr by Radial9
August 19, 20205 yr What about the video cards RAM issue and need for more video memory?. I somewhat understood 8 GB video memory will still not be enough. This is one of the issues that have prevented me to move to v5. The others are mostly compatibility and functional issues like the ones mentioned in the OP. Meanwhile I’m enjoying v4.5 very much. There are some airports which have 4k textures and PBR (LatinVFR KMIA-LEMD-KFLL, FlyTampa KLAS just to name a few) than can easily reach 10GB limit. Those developers have "lite texture" version which are shared on their forums. Other than it is a great Sim Ramon De Valencia AMD 9950X3D / 64GB DDR5 6000MHz / RTX 5090 / 1200 watt PSU MSFS 2020 and 2024
August 19, 20205 yr Since the latest hot fix along with windows2004 update I have flown the Leonardo Maddog full PBR cockpit in and out of the LVFR KMIA with no problems with my GTX1070 8GB. I haven't had an issue since with any addon airports with PMDG/ Leonardo planes. I use Active Sky for weather ENVTEX, and all the ORBX Global regions with V5 Vector. Most of my sliders about 3/4 to the right. I have spent precious little on upgrades like FUSIPC6 and FFTF because most of the addons I use have been free upgrades. Perhaps I'm wrong but I don't think Vector was an upgrade fee. Have to do a memory check on that one. For me P3DV5 has been a worth while up grade with smoother performance and just seems to look better in undefinable ways. This is one reason the new sim has failed to draw much attention from me and please I didn't say that to start another silly sim vs.sim spat. I'll close by saying I was a disappointed customer when V5 was first released and even put in for a refund the first week but changed my mind and I'm glad I did because it is at a fine state now. I'm sure I'll be using it for a long time to come. Vic green

August 19, 20205 yr Version 4.5 still works great for me. Very stable and runs on Windows 7-a real plus. Using Orbx True Earth and their airports. Don't need any other Orbx stuff with True Earth. I also drive a 2007 car without all the bells and whistles--who needs TV screens. 😉 Forever indebted to the late Michael Greenblatt of FSGS.
