The opinions of the flightsim community, a summary

I hope that the Mods will allow posting of this link, as normally posting links to other forums is frowned on. But the opinion about MSFS is so uniform throughout the entire user community, that I hope that the Mods make an exception in this case. We AVSim "snobs" are not alone. We just figured out the condition of MSFS before others did.

I posted that link before from which this summary was generated. There are certain people at Avsim who vehemently disagree with points 1 through 3. They are outliers from every other forum and majority of pilots and simmers alike.

I took the Icon A5 to South Georgia (South Sandwich Islands), in the South Atlantic. I have visited the place four times. Once on HMS Bristol, after Operation Corporate. Twice on HMS Endurance. Once on HMS Dumbarton Castle - My last trip after serving 24 years in the RN.

In the Sim I paid a visit to Grytviken, Leith, Stromness and Husvik. Athough buildings are there, they don't look like the abandoned Whaling Stations (for obvious reason). But, they are there in the right location! The (what passes for) roads are there, true to life (from what I remember them as).

It was the sky though. Just how I remembered it. You felt cold, just looking at it. Thanks MS/Asobo for allowing me back - I don't know if anyone else goes there!

ETA: Did not see any Elephant Seals or their harums whilst I was there - A MOD perhaps, one day.

Wow, HMS Bristol -- now there is an interesting ship.  I always thought of it as a cruiser, even though they gave it the destroyer designation.

I hear HMS Dumbarton Oaks (now in Bangladeshi service with a different name) was damaged in the Beirut explosion a few weeks ago.

I'll have to visit South Georgia also.  Before I read "South Sandwich Islands" my first thought was that you visited the Okefenokee Swamp.

Its all good........

All of this angst, and back and forth...... Its almost like our version of the circle of life, and seems to happen with pretty much every new sim, whether that sim survives or not.

Many of the negative explosions reverberating through the forums currently..... If history is any guide, quite a few, maybe even most who are detractors now will end up swearing undying devotion to MSFS 2020, which they will slowly forget they ever had major issues with.

At least not to the extent of setting the forums alight.

Eh.

Give it time.

Hello all,

I have to throw my hat into the ring here as well.  I simply cannot believe how much my attitude to this sim has changed over the course of 8 days.  I have gone from offensive initials not allowed (mostly because not a great deal made any sense to me) to WOW WOW WOW (and, yes, I am shouting LAL ... in this case, this is Long and Loud) I really do have to give a huge shout out to the community who have provided some incredible help and they are too numerous to mention individually, as well. It is those people who have altered completely, my transformation.

I look with amusement and a little pity at the negative comments that have emanated from this forum, and yes, initially, I was one of those contributors. I say with pity, because with so little effort, accompanied by huge levels of frustration, this sim is simply magnificent in all aspects.  With the addition of addons by 3PDs it can only get better (then, where do we turn to for superlatives) I can only hope that there is ongoing information and help through this and other forums, for these people that they actually listen to and take heed of so that they too can experience the turnaround that I have been through.  Understanding the workings of this sim is the key and the rewards are huge.

My one true (ie not resolvable via community feedback) glitch was trying to land at YBWW which is an airport which takes a 747, but is relatively new.  You fellow Aussies have to try it. I will say no more, other than it may need a little work in the future LOL

Somebody. a little while ago, mentioned that they had not seen any Hippos in the sim.  I can verify that they are so significantly and realistically depicted, that you can not see them because they are under the water. I guess they get a little bit frightened because you are flying over the top of them LOL

This, guys n girls is just the beginning .... I just wish I was twenty years younger so that I could enjoy this for so much longer.

Regards

Tony

This is an awesome start by MS and its vendors. I am sure they would add to this and make it awesome in good time. If you are not ok with this approach and feel you are entitled to everything done perfectly for your majesty''s pleasure, cause you paid $80, STFU! They wanted a manual..Really? Otherwise why release it prematurely they ask.

Same thing kind of here, I have been back and forth from bad to good to bad to good, and I'm somewhere in the glass slightly more than half full category. I just hope they don't drop the platform or make things too difficult to edit.

I have a weird complaint.

Since I've been flying in MSFS and using skyvector.com for navigation, I've noticed just how low resolution and how many errors the official charts have! 😄

Funny thing, I only noticed a couple of errors the whole time I was flying P3D using skyvector. Who knew?

Just for the record I paid $1 (premium deluxe), someone gave me a free copy (long story), but as far as us being whiners, yah we are.

I was defending Xplane 11, but I still think XP 11 has almost as much potential as this engine, if they just fix certain things. I however am less enthusiastic about XP 11 fixing graphics stuff compared to where this might be headed by default, so in that sense my bets favor MSFS in the long run, in the short term I am unsure. That said, there is a whole lot more to fix here, it's a long road ahead.

The advantage to spending all the time and resources on graphics and rendering is what we see, but the disadvantages are also obvious. As far as this thing being better in every way beyond a default FSX or P3D, in some ways, but not every way. Still a lot of nuisances and issues.

Agree with the Cruiser designation - It sure was in a "Class of her own" - the rest of the class were cancelled with the CVA-01 carriers in the 1966 Strategice Defence Review. I served 1982 - 1985. A great, happy ship throughout. Unfortunately, had a bad habit of catching fire - quite often!

Dumbarton Oaks eh? Dumbarton Castle, was the FIGs (Falkland Island Guard Ship), HMS Leeds Castle was the other FIGs. I spent Millenium eve testing our cryptographic equipment with Whalebone Cove / Falklands Commcen (one of only two ships doing this) to make sure all was well with the ficticious Millenium bug!

Dumbarton Castle was used to help the drawdown of the Royal Marine detachment at King Edward Point in early 2000. It took the ship 14 days from Mare Harbour (FI) to South Georgia, then back, then back, then back .......!

HMS Endurance would pop there occasionaly to check up on the place. Either just after, or just before we went in to the ice (Antarctic) to carry out one of our work periods.

I mentioned the South Sandwich Islands mainly because South Georgia is lumped in with them.

Oops!  Castle!

I can only imagine some of the rough sea states you have been through around S. Georgia and/or the Falklands.  I know people that have served in Antarctica at an American base there -- they told me how rough the seas were going on the boat ride from Chile to Antarctica, and that's in the same neck o the woods as the Falklands.

If I'm remembering correctly, the Chilean Navy even had their Oberon class subs with extended sail height to better deal with the wave size off their coast.

Ahoy shipmate! Actually the rougest storm was in the North Sea, late 70's.

I was serving on HMS Sheffield. Weather was so bad, it buckled the hangar doors so they wouldn't open. Not only that our helicopter (Wasp) was washed overboard. Even though it was chained down! WAFFU's eh?

Give me an Avsim snob any day over some of the YT bozzos dear to the MS marketing dept.😅 . Inclusion, the fashionable buzzword of this day and age, is overrated anyway.
