MSFS 2020 or P3D v5

Awe...there is the P3D I remember...with its hundreds of $$$ in addon "make up" to get a guy looking its way. Too much trouble for too little in return.

I still prefer the natural beauty of MSFS.

Love the comparison flights with the small difference you noted.  MSFS, out-of-the-box, day 1, P3D, years of post-release development, $100s (if not thousands) in addons.

It would be more accurate to compare it to P3D v1.0 out-of the box day 1 (and I know there was not a Diamond aircraft in the default release...neither were those clouds or scenery).

Anyway....the general theme we all can generally agree upon is the MSFS for VFR and P3D (all dressed up $1000's later) for procedural commercial flying.

You still haven't said what sort of flying you do: tubeliners or VFR.

Subject to that, don't waste you time being a pioneer.  Let the MSFS fans do that.  I waited several 3 months after the release of P3D V5 before moving up.  By that time, most of the initial problems had been sorted out and all the key add-ons I use were compatible with it.  The changeover took I suppose 2 or 3 hours whereas with MSFS, you are likely to be battling with it for weeks if not months.  Most of the add-ons were upgraded free (NGXu, Orbx, Active Sky and most payware airports), so if you already have P3D V4.5, the same will be true for you.

Similar to anything new: if you crank the settings up you'll get poor performance but I see significant performance improvements relative to V4,5.

I'm in a similar position to the OP with respect to p3d, got p3d 4.5 and not upgraded to 5. Unless p3d does something amazing in 5.? Then it's unlikely I'll upgrade, unless of course FS doesn't get fixed or add on aircraft we are all expecting.

Did go for FS2020 though, and pretty impressed as a base sim...

P3D is dead. Development for P3D will trickle out than disappear. P3D will become a niche simulator. Ditto for X-Plane. Join the future of flight simming and leave the old and tired behind. P3D rest in peace. For years you rehashed, recycled and warmed  up close to 20 year old code. You went stale, relied on addon developers to prop you up with often overpriced addons. These days are gone. Welcome to the New World!

Here is a shot of MSFS DEFAULT scenery on a LOW-END Pc.

With all due respect, flight simulation is not tied to the accuracy with which the scenery can be represented. If it were, no one would have ever purchased X-Plane, P3D, IL-2, DCS, etc. Additionally, none of the professional pilot training sims would be used. The professional 777 sim that I had some time on a couple of years ago had terrible visuals. I got interested in flight simulation way back in the subLOGIC days because I wanted to learn something about aviation. I didn't need pretty scenery to do that.

However, you can use these programs for whatever reason you would like and they all have strengths and weaknesses. Claiming that MSFS is somehow the ultimate in flight simulation is simply myopic.

My gosh P3D looks horrible. Like a cartoon from 1982 or a cheap mobile game.

Great comment. I totally agree. My friends laugh at me for sticking with XP11 as they all have the shiny MSFS but for me photoscenery is not important and I actually prefer landclass. I also just like the "feel" of airliners in XP11.

Thats not to say MSFS does not look great, of course it does and I shall be getting it one day to use alongside XP11.

I used SubLogic ATP extensively when I was young. To this day the "heavy feel" of airliners has been done best in THAT old sim and its evidence that you dont NEED super duper eye candy to have a realistic feeling sim.

Recall that FS9 is STILL chugging away happily (and so is TES Oblivion, which came out the same year!)  and will continue to do so. So will XP11. Some of us still prefer those sims (me included). I will as I've said above still get MSFS because it looks amazing!.... but it wont be my primary sim.

That is true. It does look quite antiquated when comparing scenery BUT, everything WORKS!

For me MSFS offers everything I have ever wanted and needed from a flight sim, meaning I have no further need for either XP11 or P3D4.5 - I never did make the leap to P3Dv5 as it didn't really do anything different to 4.5 and with with MSFS on the way I was not going to spend out on it. These are all personal decisions and each needs to make the choice for themselves based on their needs and wants. P3D and XP will not be going anywhere anytime soon, but I can see support for P3D slowly dwindling as development centers more on the new kid on the block. X-Plane has a more devoted, if smaller fanbase, that will ensure it continues to live for the foreseeable. If you have the time and the space (and the money) then you can have them all and enjoy them all for what they offer..

I can't argue with that. Id rather have a sim where everything works! 😃 Its just that it looks like it was put in the washing machine along with 100 liters of bleach!

If you are a VFR pilot wanting to explore new territory for which say you don't have an ORBX region you might be better off buying MSFS than the P3D addon.

If your flight style is covered by your current set of paid addon on P3D no real reason to forcefully go to MSFS (and, always remember the 1$ game pass option to just give it a shot)

I've learned three lessons over the years:

- Never touch a running system
- Don't fix it, if it ain't broken
- Never be the first, let others get a bloody nose

So I wouldn't recommend neither MSFS nor P3D to the thread creator, instead stay on P3D V4.5 some time until MSFS and P3D V5 are more stable.

As the thread creator owns P3D V4.5, I think there's no absolute necessity to upgrade to P3D V5. And MSFS is a very new thing and may need a little more development. Just my opinion...

I can do both, but curious why you think P3D is a “dead sim”

Why it’s dead? Addon creators are backing off and no new simmer without any sim experience will buy xplane over MSFS. Xplane will be stuck with the remaining 500 word not allowed . Good luck

For the next year at least, its P3D (4.5).

There are zero planes for MSFS and so many bugs and broken items to fix.

Unless you're happy just putting around in a 152 looking at the ground.

I'm likely returning MSFS for now.

Tell me who in uses 3D autogen  in P3Dv5 i don`t, and i run at 4k with PMDG airliners something i don`t think you will be able to do in MSFS for some time, until the hardware improves.

You don't use 3D autogen in P3D?

I can safely say you are in the minority.
