I need some IFR education

Featured Replies

I can setup and fly an IFR flight easily, set departure, arrival runway is ILS, set NAV mode, follow instructions, once in contact with approach, VOR1, APP and fly her on in..

My confusion while in route.. You can request vectors to the next waypoint from the ATC.. And it doesn't matter if I'm 300 miles off course, upside down, spinning in circles, 7 waypoints into the flight. It's always the same heading response no matter what..  Is this broken? If not can some educate me here why it's ALWAYS the same heading they tell me to follow when requesting vectors?

At present IFR and MSFS do not play nice.. this is broken in more ways than one.

Lets see what the next updates bring 🙂

Thanks Bert. I got bored during a long haul and decided to request vectors randomly and was completely befuddled why it was always trying to send to me Canada no matter what stage of the flight I was in. I knew it was wrong but needed some confirmation

IFR seems to work pretty well for me. It's the avionics conking out that is the problem. I just tried an IFR flight in the Mooney M20 from Liverpool to Paris, and it was working fine, following the route okay with ATC working fine too, and did so through the first four or five waypoints on the climb up to 23,000, but then the map on the GPS went out, although I could still see the waypoints on the plan on the GPS, so I continued and it was following the IFR plan waypoints in sequence just fine regardless of the map not being available. However, shortly afterwards I lost the GPS completely and the avionics stack too, so it was no longer possible to fly the route. Nevertheless, I am fairly sure had the avionics not conked out, it would have followed the plan all the way to Paris. So it's the avionics bug which is the issue for me, because when they are working it flies the route just fine.

Until the autopilot decides to put you into a spiral dive, which tends to happen when you least expect it..

Embarking on the journey of Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) education is an exhilarating challenge for any aspiring aviator. The complexities of navigating solely by instruments demand a profound understanding, and I'm thrilled at the prospect of delving into this intricate realm

That's just wonderful lol

IfR in MSFS has been no problem for me as long as you aren't using the default ATC. Be your own controller.

But if one learns to a proficient level without automation, then when using automation to reduce workload, if something unexpected rears its head, one should be experienced and fully proficient to compensate.

I am logging most of my hours in the FlightFX Marwan's Hjet (Hondajet), which has a ton of workload reducing capability. Almost 500 of my 900+ hours in type were logged before much of the automation was available in the model. Despite my personalized checklists, with the automation I on occasion mess up.  Example: loading my approach, dialing in the lowest crossing altitude, then neglecting to engage VNAV and subsequently overflying my TOD.  Has happened twice, perhaps three times. We each get focus interruptions in this simulation endeavor.  No problem.  Experience with all modes is a saviour, so to speak.  And recovery is natural and relaxed.

A bot did necromance this thread,

From which people had long since fled.

Exhilarated by IFR flying,

Though we think it must be lying.

For its words were clearly spoon-fed.

Absolutely.  Its own pattern recognition is itself recognizable now.  Just another example of how what we call AI these days isn't actually any kind of intelligence, just pattern matching.
