Computer upgrade strategy (CPU + graphics)

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have an i7-6700K @ 4 Ghz and GTX 1060 3GB.

Do you think it would be worth upgrading my card to a 2080 or 3070 without upgrading my CPU or would this be a waste?

MSFS 2020 dev tools suggests my GPU is the limiting factor.

Also, do you think if my PCI-E was limited to 8x this would be a bottleneck on my new GPU? My 16x slot appears to be damaged.

Thanks!

Your system very obviously is bottlenecked by the GPU, the CPU is fast enough. Updating the graphics card would help a lot, 3070 seems reasonable. I have no opinion regarding the 16x slot, though.

8x is just as good

BLUF: Overall inconsequential. Mostly helps on the lows and 1% fps, however MSFS does move a lot more textures so you may see a larger difference, but will that difference really show when you consider the other older components on the system.

I agree with the other posters in upgrade the video card first 3080 if you can find one and then later on if you are still not happy upgrade the rest of the system as the 3080 will slip right into a newer MB.

Thank you all :)

Also, if you can't get an RTX 3070 at launch, AMD just announced their new RX 6000 series.

The RX 6800 at $579 will have 16 GB GDDR6 memory and is (according to AMD) 18% faster than the RTX 2080 ti. Also meaning faster than the RTX 3070.

It will be available in mid November. If they have enough cards to deliver.

Thanks for the link. Altough I think there is any feelable difference at all. 0 to 3.3 fps at 0,1% and 0 to 1 fps difference at average. No one will ever tell the difference.

You should be able to overclock the CPU to 5Ghz or close to it. Replace the video card with 3070 or 3070 Ti when it comes out.  Get at least 32GB Ram.  The machine will be good for 4 years plus.

Absolute minimum of 8GB VRAM. More if possible.

Nvidia had talked about a 16GB 3070 super but apparently dropped the SKU. No idea why, though there are rumours it may be related to how they have changed their chip supplier.

AMD also have some good options though supply may be an issue, as it is with NVidia. With Nvidia you do get ray Tracing support but there is no indication of when if ever we will get it and also no way of knowing how badly it will effect frame rates or whether it does anything useful in terms of graphics quality.

The large amount of GPU MEM might actually make the AMD option a better choice in the long run, with MSFS2020 using so much of it.

I have your CPU, and I upgraded to a RTX 2060 Super and 32 GB of ram.  My frames are usually in the 40-50 range.  If you're on a budget this works very well for me.

I get something similar with an i58400 (performs pretty much identical to a 6700K in benches) a RTX 2060 non super and 32Mb ram. I actually set my Nvidia setting to lock the game at 36 fps though (exactly one quarter of the 144hz my screen runs at) .

There are EXCEPTIONS though.  Freeware Sydney city on Ultra drops my FPS to like 1 FPS more or less 😄
