No surprises on the instant sell out and scalpers having their way.

Here's a MSFS 2020 performance review of the 6800 XT:

https://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/amd_radeon_rx_6800_xt_review,20.html\

Seeing this review, I'm still waiting for a rtx 3080 with more vram (looking towards VR in my future).  My 1070 can mostly handle MSFS at 2K, but my card is now over 4 years old!  I am so ready to upgrade it in my new 10700k build, though I would not be surprised that it won't be until August '21 before I can reasonably buy one.

I hear you. Maybe we will be able to buy them next year when something better is on the horizon.

That’s not a bad price Steve, I’d be attempted too but I’m going to try an hang on. What you currently running on?

4K performance im MSFS 2020 is really disappointing. I‘m wondering if the „only“ 10Gb VRAM of the 3080 is really such a big issue a lot of people are making out of it. The 16Gb of the 6800XT don‘t seem to help much.

By the way: In Germany availabilities for the 6800XT were just as bad as for the 3080 launch.

Hard to say.....I know the P3d V5 with DX12 crowd seems to think that 10gb wont be enough based on their experience so far.   The tests we see in the vid are not all that extensive...and maybe other parameters would impact.  However you're on a 3080....bravo...and I"d stay where you're at until any tests conclusively point to the 6800xt as the clear winner.

YEah.....on an old Titan (Maxwell) that, from what I've seen in benchmarks on the web...is about the same as a 1070 or less....pretty sad for the kind'a card it is with 12gb memory.  😞  Just goes to show how far the tech has advanced.

If the card is still available tomorrow, I may pick it up and just put getting a 3080 or 6800 (or 6900)XT out of my mind until I can buy one at Amazon AT retail. 🙂

I wonder if that extra 6gb of Vram will be more important when people start downloading more detailed scenery, planes, etc? And with some nice sceneries already available, like the grand canyon, etc, maybe more Vram will be needed.

So many new, exciting pc parts (that are sort of "out", lol), and the decision to want to make the "better" decision regarding MSFS makes it hard to know what parts to get to get in order to get the max bang for the buck for me (unless it's someone who likes to get the new stuff every year, and is willing to pay for that extra 5 fps). Decisions, decisions.

With MSFS getting 40 or 36 FPS at 4k with the newest stuff out there, every few FPS might make a difference.

And with DX12 slated to come in the future, maybe it's good news for me to have things out of stock until the reviews and dust settles.

Thanks for the link to this review!

I purchased a 3090 just over week ago, so it's comforting to learn that at least concerning Flight Simulator it's wasn't a bad choice, albeit a financially illogical one.

unfortunately now they have no real incentive to add more RAM...

SAR Pilot. Flight Sim'ing since the beginning.

Reading around the web there's lots of debate whether the 10GB on a 3080 is relevant.  Most arguments come down to: "it's enough, and by the time you'll need more the 3080 itself will no longer be relevant".  But MSFS isn't just another game title with a 6 month life span.  I'd rather deal with excess vram now than being limited by it in a year or so.  Heck, my 1070's full 8GB was hardly touched until MSFS came along and now it's being maxed out on occasion.  I'm holding out that there will be a 3080 related gcard with more than 10GB coming in the next few months, if anything to fill out its product line (plus they know people will buy it).  If I'm gonna spent $$$$ on a gcard, it won't be to ditch it in two years (though that's been my past history with gcards until my 1070).

Looking at that review, the answer to how important VRAM is is right in front of you. Just look at the 3090 vs 3080 benchmark at 4k resolution. 24GB VRAM vs 10GB and the jump is only from 42 to 45 fps. And we can’t even say the 3 fps improvement is due to the additional VRAM on the 3090. I think it’s a clear choice to go with 3080. I actually camped out at Microcenter overnight. I’ve never done that hahaha. I was approx #50 of 200 when the manager came out in the morning and announced they only received 12 cards. I managed to score a Ryzen 5600X at least. Anyway, looking at these reviews, I think I’m going to target a 3080 rather than 6800 XT.
