Well this is all a bit disappointing re the 6800XT seems all the post launch hype was a rather off the mark. It would be a bit easier to make an informed choice if we knew how things would go with MSFS on DX12.  But as things stand still a difficult pill to swallow moving from a 1080ti with 11 gig vram to a 3080 with only10.

Yeah, I was expecting more from the 6800 XT.  It's only saving grace is the 16GB RAM onboard.

I agree.  I have the same card as you.  Not worth the money right now IMO. That's crazy $$$.... MSFS runs fine at 1440P for me.

A lot of folks here r dissappointed. The way AMD made it sound it was going to be a slam dunk over the 3080.  All the hype and publicity sure for some other formats like 1080 AMD does well, but I will stick with my new system and 1440.

Kept on telling everybody compare apples to apples, Flight simming always seems to do better with nividia

I think AMD still has something up their sleeve with big navi and 6900 vs 3090.

I would have suspected it yesterday also, until I looked into the benchmarks  showing flight sim specific data.  The most surprising was the 3070 matching the 6800xt in 4K performance.  Quite happy with my 3090 as well.

I think that once stocks replenish on both camps, we might see some price wars, I do agree that the 3080 is the winner having seen the benchmarks, the 6800 XT would definitely be more compelling if it was priced below $600 which would put it up against the upcoming 3070ti & they could market a 6900 non XT against the 3080.

Agree with this... For me it now feels like the wrong time to buy... might need to let this play out until spring then see where the chips fall.

Looking at that review, the answer to how important VRAM is is right in front of you. Just look at the 3090 vs 3080 benchmark at 4k resolution. 24GB VRAM vs 10GB and the jump is only from 42 to 45 fps. And we can’t even say the 3 fps improvement is due to the additional VRAM on the 3090. I think it’s a clear choice to go with 3080. I actually camped out at Microcenter overnight. I’ve never done that hahaha. I was approx #50 of 200 when the manager came out in the morning and announced they only received 12 cards. I managed to score a Ryzen 5600X at least. Anyway, looking at these reviews, I think I’m going to target a 3080 rather than 6800 XT.

and 3070 to 3080? 🙂

Just going one step further,  just from my experience in the past, with FSX, we have to remember that flight simulator 2020 is going to be one of those games, where it keeps on building and building with more addons, 3rd party developers, such as PMDG, Aerosoft. Fs DreamTeam, Flightbeam, Fly tampa, etc.  They will bring more airports. planes, and so on.  I had over $2,000 worth in add-ons for FSX.

The point I am getting to. their is no system on earth than can play the sim at MAX settings.even now Eventually with much more highly intense programs going into the Sim the key is obtaining a butter smooth performance.

Concluding its great seeing these benchmarks.. 50, 60, frames, but when 3rd parties come to the table frames rates will be immensly cut., which is fine, cause will be able to enjoy the Sim even more!!

For me only the 3090 makes sense. The 3080 is too much of a lateral move from a 2080ti. I'm afraid I won't see that much difference for $800. Id' rather spend the $1500 and see a real appreciative difference and have some forced obsolescence cushion thrown in as well. The problem is that I simply can't find any of this hardware anywhere. I've been on EVGA's waiting list for 6 weeks and not a peep. I think that list is a scam.

Might a driver update or two be all that AMD needs?

Not sure how you draw this conclusion honestly, the 3090 performs 8-10% better than the 3080 at best, for 800$ more... You could buy the 3080, & keep the 800$ for a 4080 2 years down the line. Heck you'd even save some money with the sale of your 3080 then.... The 3090 makes 0 sense from a value & performance perspective as far as I'm concerned

Regarding the 10GB debate, the simulator is shown to be using up to slightly more than 12GB VRAM at 4K on some benchmark videos. This one for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Jw23ABNYMM

It may not make a difference in the average frame rate, but it could affect perceived smoothness especially in RAM-limited scenarios. The extra VRAM could also prove handy as World Updates further increase the visual fidelity of the scenery and when ray-tracing is added to the mix.

Also for anyone looking to get the RTX 3090, just wait for the RTX 3080 Ti. 20GB GDDR6X, same amount of SMs enabled. Maybe better clocks too if the new GA102 bin is used.

That video on the other hand shows quite some strong performance even in 4K with the 6800 XT

I have a 1080Ti and feel zero need to upgrade. My Ryzen 7 upgrade made way more difference than a 3080 or a 6800XT would in the sim world.
