P3D v5.1 performance observations

I'm not in front of it now.  But I use a mostly default NCP.  But under change resolution I set 30hz refresh rate.  Under NCP manage 3d settings P3D the default should tell vsync to run program settings.  So then in P3D I check vsync on / TB on. Unlimited frame rate.  That works well for me.  Once I had micro stutters and had to delete my p3d.cfg and let it rebuild.  But everybody's hardware plays differently together.

I assume you are playing with the refresh rate since you don't have a G-sync/free sync monitor (as stated by Rob in this thread)?

That’s correct. I have a 43” Samsung tv

Hi Shom,

when i was still on 4.5 i used VSync on in P3D and had the FPS limit to 30. With those settings 4.5 was nearly smooth but there where still noticable microstutters while taxi and takeoff, but it worked so far.

Then i upgraded to 5.0 with exactly the same settings i´ve had in 4.5. I could instantly noticed, that there was a performance increase overall, but still stutters while taxi. Though i changed my setting from 4.5 like this: I have left the VSync enabled in P3D but i´ve set the FPS to unlimited. In the first step i noticed that the FPS counter was at 60 to 80 and somtimes even at 110 on an airport like EDDF from Aerosoft. But the FPS where oscilating very much and from this i could really see, the stutters came from. I left the FPS in P3D at unlimited and set instead a FPS limitation to 30 in the NVidia Controlpanel. From then on, absolute not stutters anymore an my FPS counter is nailed at 30 in P3D, no matter where i taxi or takoff from (EDDF, EDDM, LEMD, EGGL...).

The overall smoothness, especially while taxi, take off or landing at high dense airports is just incredible. Even with Ultrasettings for active sky ASCA and a lot of clouds everything stays smooth.

Of course there are still longframes from time to time, especially if you approaching a high dense scenery. But i can see that this comes from the big amount of textures being loaded at a certain point.

I really like this setting in 5.1...that is, setting 30fps in NVidia Control Panel outside the sim, and setting Unlimited in the sim.  I leave Vsync on and everything is smooth and no issues come up.

Sometimes though during a long flight of over 700 miles or so, the scenery might get blurry near the end of the flight.  I simply go into Options, and change one parameter like moving from Dense to Very Dense or vice versa in Autogen or something else.  When I return to the sim, everything is clear.

Watching the Milviz stream P3D V5 was right to go to DX12 now by the time it comes to MSFS P3DV5x will be better sorted, and could be a step backward for MSFS.

I put a link in the Business Jets thread below this but it`s on the MSFS forum, they are not allowed to say anything then they say a lot, realistic highly detailed aircraft flying in MSFS a long way off.

Some tips:

  • 1080Ti will not be able to handle anything above 2X SSAA use 4X to 8X MSAA
  • Level of Detail Radius = Ultra or lower
  • Building density = Dense
  • Dynamic 3D Autogen Vegetation = unchecked
  • Water Reflections = User Vehicle only
  • Enhanced Atomospherics - Cloud Resolution = High or lower
  • Godrays = unchecked
  • Autogen and scenery draw distance = Very High or lower
  • Special Effect both at Low
  • Dynamic Reflections = Low
  • Shadows - Internal Vehicle, External Vehicle, Clouds, Terrain ONLY (everything else unchecked)
  • Traffic - all set to 12 and Airport vehicle density Off (they just run into you anyway)
  • Uncheck "Wide-view Aspect Ratio"
  • If you don't have a Variable Refresh Rate monitor (G-sync or FreeSync), set monitor to 30Hz or just RTSS to limit frames to 30, in sim set Vsync On and Target frame rate = Unlimited ... if you do have a VRR monitor then Vsync off and TFR Unlimited

Hi Rob,

When you refer to the 1080 Ti not handling anything above 2X SSAA, does this apply in HD as well as 4k? I use an ultrawide monitor with a 2560x1080 resolution, and find that 8X is the only thing that will remove the jaggies for me. Is there some other settings I could use to improve the aliasing without handicapping my 1080 Ti with 8X SSAA?

Absolutely not!

It would be helpful if you posted your current Graphics settings (Traffic, Display, World, Lighting) , relevant Add-On list, and location where you have stutters. Otherwise we're all just "guessing".

AGAIN, without know more details, this is all just guess work.

Cheers, Rob.

Rob, why did you suggest not to use "Wide-view Aspect Ratio". I've always been using it since I have a 3440x1440 screen. Isn't it supposed to be used for those wide screens?

Additionally set the low latency mode to "ULTRA" in NVI

What does that do specifically for the sim?

i think this is something that is potentially helpful in DX11, but no longer in DX12.

5800X3D, 4090FE, 64GB DDR4 3600C16, Gigabyte X570S MB, EVO 970 M.2's, Alienware 3821DW  and 2  22" monitors, Corsair RM1000x PSU,  360MM MSI MEG, MFG Crosswind, T16000M Stick, Boeing TCA Yoke/Throttle, Skalarki MCDU and FCU, Logitech Radio Panel/Switch Panel, Spad.Next

I found changing my monitor (4K 58" TV) to 30mhz refresh and enabling Vsync and a 30 fps limit in Prepar3d eliminated it...Now very smooth all round...

And the view out of the side window on a monitor that big certainly gives you a perepective of height...amazing..

well, i hope you don´t exspect a detailed technical discription, because i´am too lazy to write all that down. It makes at least for me a little difference i terms of switch off little flimmering especially on high resulution textures with tiny details while turns for example.

This is what NVidia says:

Turn on Ultra Low Latency Mode - If NVIDIA Reflex is not available, your next best option is to turn on the Ultra Low Latency mode in the NVIDIA graphics driver. This setting also reduces the render queue, but does so from the driver instead of the game.

NVIDIA Reflex is more effective at reducing latency and operates independently of NVIDIA Ultra low latency mode. If both NVIDIA Reflex and the Ultra Low Latency mode are enabled, NVIDIA Reflex will override Ultra Low Latency functionality.

Hm, ...that´s something i´ve never observed yet. Do you have texture streaming enabled?

Traditional reference of 2560 it's 2560 x 1440 (1440p and 16:9) ... 2560 x 1080 is 21:9 which might explain why you see more jaggies and need to use 8XSSAA.  Are you running P3D with Wide-View Aspect option enabled or disabled?  If enabled, try disabled.

Hi Rob,

Yes, I should have been more specific. It is a 21:9 monitor. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check them out.

Yes.  Not a big problem, and doesn't always occur.  SHOULD I have Texture Streaming enabled in your opinion?
