What I feel that fsx is giving tough competition is mostly got to do with the investment made for the addons , 95% of that base surely would be PMDG etc.. Also the Steam version is very cheap PMDG in the past said that XPlane wasn't capable of supporting what they wanted to do with their 747. They dipped their toes in with their DC-6, but then they stated that about their 747 when people asked if it meant they'd be doing more stuff for XPlane. Of course they might be regretting that at least a little bit since the lack of an SDK has effectively put the brakes on their MSFS development ambitions for a long time now, and any barriers they perceived toward putting their 747 into XPlane probably look like a piece of cake now in comparison to the efforts they'll have to go to, to get it into MSFS when they eventually are in a position to have a stab at it.
