Comparison: 2020 (Initial Release) vs 2021 SU5 1.18.14)

Morphing mountains always happened before, everybody talked about that well before SU5.

Performance is so much butter than is possible to increase settings a lot in VR, which wasn't possible before.

You make it sound as every object "pops a few feet away". There are some, which simply has been programmed with the wrong LOD settings, like the default taxiway blue light fixtures. Before SU5 they had *NO LOD* at all, which was also a mistake.

Yeah, because the antialiasing doesn’t work properly either anymore. So, of course the settings can be increased. Morphing mountains we’re always there, just not a few hundred foot below the plane.

Objects pop in to view as you look left and right, which in VR during the pattern, you do, a lot.

And the reflections are simply broken.

Well that's it then - Conclusive!

Except...  from the digital foundry interview, they admit it themselves...

We tuned the distances, the draw distances, of objects and the way the LOD’s are being used in order to minimise the number of meshes and textures in memory at the same time.”

So with this in mind, why do the pictures look so good?  And why do we all not see that?

Still pictures don't tell the whole story of course, because when moving, even at 300 LOD I am still seeing object and texture pop-in, and my environmental lighting is borked, as I don't have an HDR monitor.  So, how do those photos look so good, because mine don't in SU5.  Is that from an HDR monitor, and even if it is, do the screen captures filter out any processing?

With stuff popping in when just looking out the cockpit window as your flying along, this won't show in a still photo.

Sim update 5 looks better.

Better than what, FS 2004?

These screenshots demonstrate that all this talk about "image degradation" is just that: talk.

My eyes demonstrate that this is not true on my system.

Now, what should I trust? My eyes or someone claiming those are pre and post crashdate screenshots at ULTRA settings?

I have a hobby (hi-end audio) in which people are divided in two well separated teams (usually metaphorically going at each others throats): those who say that, for technical reasons, a cable cannot change the sound of your setup, the others (including me) who trust their ears. And we are talking about a single cable which costs much more than a RTX3090. I am sorry: I believe what I see, hear, touch and so on. I am a mathematician, a researcher and a data analyst: I believe what I experience.

Other explanation: there is some bug that reduces settings randomly, or even consistently all of the time, but there are ways to get them back to "actual ULTRA".

On the other hand: I see that maybe I was right with my little speculative explanation: they are starting to admit that some graphics pipelines were actually deactivated in this release (see other post on this forum).

Question: are we trying to understand what's going on, or we want to make a point and be right no matter what?

Your eyes might have been deceived b y the fact there have been reports that, in some situations, Ultra is not really ultra until first set Low/Medium, Apply, then switch back to Ultra.

People are wasting their time giving complex answers to one sentence throw-away statements from people whining because others don't consider their flightsim to be perfect (even after Asobo have just acknowledged the issues), like they did with the tree LOD issues we were gaslighted into believing were being made up, until Asobo didn't like it either and fixed that.

Anyway.  As Asobo have now acknowledged certain issues, it is simply a waiting game for their fixes. So, I'm off to watch something more entertaining, maybe on Netflix - supposed to be some other good comedy on there apparently!

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

I'm quite perplexed as to why so many simmers with high end pc's are having so many issues and why some of us with old pc specs are not having CTD or mayor issues is beyond me. I for one believe SU5 a step forward in the right direction, with just a few of what I consider minor issues, performance/eye candy is fantastic. Anyway,  a lot of the comments made here in avsim directed towards Asobo, I find quite harsh, unnecessary and baseless.

That doesn't mean there has been a visual degradation.

Except that when you add a LOD and also change the default LOD rendering distance, you at the very least modified the way the object looks at a distance in some cases. Whether or not you want to call it degradation is semantics IMO.

The fact the LOD is affecting the terrain at varying altitudes and doesn't seem easily correctible by sliders is another issue.

There are also issues with some of the settings got reset (at least mine did) in the settings, so I had to change everything around. I'm not sure that my settings are as optimal as before because they don't seem to hold as well or maintain the same balance, but it's definitely not pain free.

If you look at my signature specs, I think I qualify as a high end PC.

I've missed most of the drama on the forums because a) I expected it.. its the same after every update  and b) for me.. I have only seen improvements.. no popping, no wierd lighting and a frame rate increase of about 20FPS from 50 to 70 in complex areas  (I've now limited by FPS for 60 everywhere, and am not getting any stutters or anything.

If I am being honest, the lighting has changed a little, especially flying under cloud, but it's nothing I haven't seen in real life 🙂

I would say better then FS9, FSX, FS2004, P3D and XP.

Best eyecandy simulator ever, even P3D in all its glory with $$$$$$ in scenery doesn't even come close to what MSFS provides out-of-the-box.

Color saturation is very subjective, nobody seem to agree about this, see post about real world being even more washed out than SU5.

Of course you did not say anything to the suddenly absent volumetric lighting...

Probably compares to we older system owners having a fuddle doddle horse, and some having problems with a high spirited stallion.   LOL!

That's what I was referring to ...

Although something has undeniably been nerfed in the lighting department. Curiously enough, though, I am not observing that popping problem when looking left or right, at least not greater than before last update.
