I wouldn't go that far. Honestly, SU5 raises issues but tweaking Nvidia game filters a bit brings about a reasonable outcome, maybe not as good as before  but I don't feel I am 'in trouble' with my 2013 Dell monitor. The overexposure is less (still too much but palatable), the clouds are lovely (no artifact, no banding,)

Reading about these issues is a total opposite of what I'm experiencing. I've had not one CTD, no graphical washed out images. So it's strange. I have no third party software installed with the sim as the beta deleted my install so I left it stock after the reinstall.  HDR off.  I would try at the very least reinstalling graphic drivers. 

 

 

System: i7 11700k, Gigabyte Aourus Elite, 32GB Ram, EVGA RTX3090 FTW3 on 471.11 driver

Running in 4K Res @ 4K render

The cloud issue I was having in SDR is the darker bits and the white bits are featureless and lack any detail compared to HDR.  Potentially Nvidia setting can compensate, never tried, was easier to swap to a HDR capable display. Though it may also be a case of not knowing what your missing unless you can directly compare.

Not all displays are the same as well. Even swapping from HDMI to display port on some monitors can change the look.

Haze is a normal part of r/w flying - especially in summer. It is typically far more obvious in the air than it might be on the ground. Here in the northeastern US in summer, in-flight horizontal visibility is often 6 or 7 miles at best, even on a clear and sunny day. It can improve substantially if a cold front has recently passed through, followed by a cool, dry Canadian air mass, but as soon as temperatures and humidity levels return, so does the haze.

Agreed 😄 ! What I meant is that I do not see a huge degradation from what I had before. Now, I take your word for it that  it would even be lovelier with HDR !

While true, haze has a bit of a different effect in a real life 3D visual POV than through a 2D monitor.

Been flying in real life since the mid 60s. There are many days where the air is crystal clear, not hazy every day, all day.

There seem to be a few differences in between the versions, this is the Arrow III (non-turbo) version with the D-ERIN livery.

Could this be a graphics card/driver issue? I have a Ryzen 5700XT (and the XBOX is also AMD based, right?). This stark difference is definitely weird...

EDIT: I'm using an SDR gaming monitor.

I don't normally run with HDR enabled, but after reading this thread I decided to go back and see what changes it would make. Enabled it in Win11 and then started MSFS. When it started loading pages I was appalled at the total over saturation that was showing. The pic of the rhino was practically glowing. I then checked the Graphic options and saw that HDR was turned OFF. I turned it on and it was night and day difference. Loaded up one of the Discovery flights, the one in Italy, and was impressed in the visual quality vs non-HDR. I then tried the different HDR presets that are available with my Dell display, choosing the "GameHDR" mode, and MSFS has never looked better on my PC. I guess you can teach and old dog a new trick. Now here is to hoping the CTD's stay gone.

It depends on location and season. In the eastern and southern US in summer, haze is almost always present to a greater or lesser degree. Winter is an entirely different matter. Out west, you can have truly unlimited visibility at any time of year. 

One problem in MSFS is there is no proper way to set visibility in standard aviation units. “Particle Density” alone is not sufficient. Also, MSFS does not simulate the boundary layer. Here in the east, we might have substantial haze in summer in the first few thousand feet of the air mass, but it can become crystal clear at higher altitudes.

I've been traveling the last few days and hope to hop in later today, but am curious:  regarding the anti-aliasing and shimmering, has anyone tried increasing the anti-aliasing in the Nvidia control panel to compensate?

This is true - for most of Europe and the U.S. there are many clear days (maybe 5 or 10)...per year 😉

The truth is that most parts of the world (except very dry areas) have a haze that limits visibility to 20 - 50 kilometers. Especially when seen from the air, everything looks really hazy most of the time, even on a day that a person on the ground would describe as "clear and sunny".

Most people don´t like haze (me included!). The world looks much nicer when the air is super clear, and everything is vibrant and full of contrast. Like a postcard. Ever wondered why they don´t make hazy postcards?

So it is totally understandable that people want their flightsimulators to look "nice". Clear view, distant mountains sharp and saturated. Vibrant colors.

I think a simulator should give people a choice with regard to the visibilty. There should be a slider - where you can set your air to be super-clear. However...when you fly with "realistic weather"...it should probably be hazy most of the time. Just like in the real world.

Most people don't like haze? I sure do. Here in New Jersey, many days are pretty hazy, especially, obviously, during warm weather. Frankly, I don't mind severe clear, but most of the time I'm simming I'm IFR anyway, and prefer visibility of <10 nm. That said, a good overcast at about 1000 agl does the trick, too.

Side note: It's fun to navigate by the shadows and bright spots created by gaps between large cloud masses when VFR. I've done this IRL a few times, when the opportunity and altitude were there.

Agree regarding visibility - I assume a slider hasn't been added yet. I'd love to know what discussions took place when someone said there wasn't going to be one.

Just to add another issue, you will see completely different textures at times for aprons, parking lots, roads and various things that the 3PD for an airport never intended. I have not yet checked to see if it is overlap from the blending algorithm under the surface, a change in the opacity, or a texture mapping issue where the texture is entirely different because Asobo replaced some of the default textures. I have verified this.

The amount of saturation and blending on custom ground textures and how far out that blending goes also appear to be affected. It won't affect every airport, the more custom textures (Non-Asobo), the less it will be affected. This has also as a side effect changed the way snow now works at certain custom airports.
