So the community manager burries this cryptic reply at the end of a long thread on the forums? Don't they have a communications person with enough sense to make its own post or official release for something so significant? So strange.

This. The communication is abysmal.
Sure they have Q&A, but we’re talking basics here. Burying an announcement at the bottom of a long thread in a forum. What about people that don’t read the forums?

Yes. We need an official statement. Pinned. Visible.

Hi

thanks that is an excellent point

after setting colour grading and sharpening = 0, I set the cfg file to read only.

Doh!

let’s see if it works now?

Not sure why people are turning the sharpening off.
It may reduce some mid range landscape shimmering that has been introduced in SU5, but in general, it can make buildings and runways etc. look worse.

I turned my sharpening off and it looked terrible, I had to put it back on again. I could barely read my instruments and glass screens.

So, am I missing something?  Maybe once again it is due to peoples personal preferences, screen resolution, and other settings.

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Problem is that shimmering of landscape is really annoying an almost makes you not want to look at the landscape closely  as you are flying.

Yes, I have seen this.  I am trying my best to ignore it - difficult!  Maybe if I push LOD to 700. 😀

Its even worse in VR. The ground is literally shaking!

As they have seemd to have recognised the various issues, i think it's only fair to give them time now to rectify things.

You're way to reasonable. People here do not understand that.

I think why some feel that way is Asobo, should have seen this before they forced SU5 on us all.

If I recall correctly you are playing at 4K with a lower render scale, in that case the sharpening does a good job at alleviating the blur. At native 1080p though it greatly exaggerates the grain in the reflections, shadows and ambient occlusion, brings out some of the shimmering around the aircraft, and makes the trees look horrible and pixelated.

With Sim Update 5 they toned down its intensity and it looks much better now, but still a bit too strong for my taste. I still really wish they'd let us adjust the intensity in the graphics settings, if it were a little less strong than the current implementation it would be perfect for me.

Since people were posting Xplane 11 screenshots earlier, here is a screenshot of some special XP 11 trees you will never see anywhere... Just saw I had this from the old days, thought it was interesting looking. Yes, even the XP 11 trees could be redone to a higher fidelity, but it was quite time consuming to improve upon.

The shimmering is not widespread. Post SU5, I only had once over the Golden Coast of Australia and it was indeed really an abomination. I haven't seen it elsewhere including today when I fly the Cub on floats from LFMD (Cannes) to St Tropez along the beautiful woody Estérel massif coastline (a recommended shot trip).

Trying a flight from LMDM. I haven't seen that much shimmering either, but in parts of the US some of the autogen is a bit messed up in this patch.

Sharpening for me does cause some flicker on mesh fences at airports but that is not new it has always done that.

I have got quite reasonable results by setting LOD at 300, render scale at about 110% and swapping back to a HDR display.

The very occasional bad cloud but most of the time quite acceptable.  In general HDR has improved in SU5 with the odd glitch but SDR is bad.  I am fortunate in having access to a HDR display, however people with SDR screens are in trouble till Asobo fix it.

I made a typo, I meant LFMD
