1.18.15 degraded performance over cities

Much, much better performance than before. Over London I had less than 30 fps before SU5, Paris was almost unflyable with less than 25 fps - both with the Spitfire or Savage Cub. Today I had 40 to 45 fps over Paris.

BTW: No "popping and morphing mess" at all, but I use an LOD of 3.0.

There you go... LOD 200 and 300.

Are you sure you're not seeing this over London?

Yes, I just tried it and if I don't, LOD returns to 2.0 by itself.

I've never had this happen. The only time the settings will change is if you use one of presets, low, medium, high or ultra

That's really strange. I modified both LOD values several times (to 5 or 4) and it never reset itself during restarts as long as I don't touch sliders in MSFS. Plus, I really see an improvement in the LOD radius (trees and stuff as well as PG).

Kind regards, Michael

Exactly.  No need to change to read-only unless you want to dabble in the graphics sliders.  My 2070 Super, w/ all at Ultra, can barely handle 250 let alone 300 or 400.  Nyxx says his 3080 can easily handle 400.  While I can load the flight in a non demanding area at 400, panning is total choppy and therefore unuseable.  If I go to 400 at a very intensive airport like Roman Design's CYOW, the flight starts to load then just stops before completion at which point it's Task Manager to End Task.

If UserCfg is set to Read Only, does that mean any changes I do in Graphics settings are not stored as well?

I tested my terrain LOD at 4.0, and it works well.  My question however, when I look at, but do not change or save the configuration inside the sim, the terrain LOD still says 200.  Is that correct?

The config file still has the 4.0 in it for LOD when I look at it after exiting the sim

Frankly speaking, this is a fantastic videos, I did never anticipate this to be achievable 2 years ago. I consider some pop-in glitches as a minor issue and totally understandable if you look at the overall fidelity. They will fix this.

Apart from that, disqualified to report any visual issues by modifying graphic settings beyond in-game adjustable limits. A LoD of 300 is not supported at all.

I honestly don't see much difference. Things are still popping in very close to the aircraft 🤔

PG draw distance, and thus the distance you will see PG city skylines in the air, has definitely been reduced with SU5. You can get some of it back by increasing your terrain LOD setting. The amount you can increase it depends on your hardware of course.

Ill wait on the promised sliders. Besides Its not a showstopper for me.

Yes, and then encrypt those config files…

Okay. I sucked it up and tinkered with different values while observing the increased range for buildings etc. to be visible. My take is its pretty much a trade for fps and smoothness, though, it's not a straight line. Linear increases in LOD have an ever increasing performance cost. I really like LOD of 5.0, but it is too expensive. 4.0 (with objectLOD left at 1.0) is a decent compromise for my priorities.

Not happy with the notion of tinkering with the file and locking it, but it was an interesting exercise. Pretty clear now how Asobo magically improved performance LOL.

If you set you setting within MSFS so it says "Custom" at the top, NOT e.g Ultra/high-end , etc. You can set new LOD levels in your config file and they will stay. No need at all to set to "read only" and some say MSFS can over write it anyway.

OFC your going to pay a price for uping the LOD levels. Thats down to your PC's CPU and GPU. Just becasue someone says 300 or 500 works does not meen that can or will work for you or even work in the same way. GPU seem to be used more now and thats good, also more cores are working. So its a try and see thing.

For me 4.0 (400/400) works really well. I have not tried 5 or more, It might be my CPU & GPU there not troubled with 4. Its seems to me after a lot of flights with that setting it realy cuts down the redraw poping. But that also could be down to an M.2, 19ms to servers. Who knows?

Nobody here knows.

Nobody here has a clue how the various subsystems, steaming services, caches mechanism behave and interact on such modifications. Especially when it comes to the brand new LOD system. i bet even Asobo has to investigate carefully how to increase visibility taking into account the strict XBOX mode and the revised PC mode. If it would be that trivial, they would have already increased the slider up to 1000.

it may be a personal challenge to experiment with MSFS architecture but posting YouTube Videos here and explaining or discussing SU5 degraded performance is just wrong.

I tried setting LOD to 3.0. Worked fine.

I tried setting LOD to 4.0. Game won't load up the flight after selecting aircraft / airport. It just froze.

And then I noticed this file being created when starting the sim, in the same folder as UserCfg: builderlogerror.txt

The builderlogerror file just says "Could not open file".

Question: Is it possible to delete UserCfg file and let the sim create it when starting? What will happen to my settings? Will I only have to set the graphics setting again, or control profiles too?
