…It makes my eyes water to look at the current prices of everything, yet every second person seems to own a 3090?! Folks obviously save money when in lockdown 👍

Earlier on, the 3090 didn’t look so bad compared to a scalped 3080, and it was easily attainable. At least in North America.

I would agree that the 3080 is probably a sweet spot for performance/price and running MSFS at 4K. However, anything you can get at MSRP is a good deal at this point.

For the economically challenged, an xBox|X at $500 would get a playable system at reasonably high graphic options. You can't get it at the MSRP, or even double, I don't think. If MS doesn't get those boxes out before Xmas shopping rush, it will be a big monetary loss for them. I assume they make a profit on those console sales, but maybe not.

Think about it this way. imagine 21 circle of LOD around your aircraft, the further you go away from your position, the less and less texture quality / polygon count. This is because Asobo is try to managed a "budget" of what they can render at any given time. So when you pick LOD 200, That's 200 is near the aircraft, as you go further away , that numbers go down

So it's another case of diminishing returns, as I brought up w/ regard to aerosols and weather impairing the ability to appreciate detail farther out.

Cheers

If you've gazing w/ a magnifying glass to the distant mountains to ascertain a difference you're probably not paying attention to piloting the plane.  And while you can crank LOD out farther still there is an absolute point of diminishing returns because of aerosols and clouds etc such that you can't really see the detail anyway.

Typical flight simmer....

I tried to get one when a bunch were delivered to the local Best Buy.  I got there many hours before they were going to come out of the store to start the processing of making allotments.  But when I got there the parking lot had tents in it and there were a over a hundred people already there, so left w/o further ado.  And I tried to get one in the cart when they would list every 2 weeks between certain hours for several months.  I actually had one in the cart and when I went to the cart it wasn't there, backed out one page, and that was all she wrote.  Had I been able to grab one for $1500 I would have happily done so.  Fortunately, 3090 offers exactly nothing for me and my 3440x1440 display, and my 9900K now at 4.9Ghz.   I'm good to go until MSFS can run every plane in every scenario at 60fps, and we're nowhere near that currently.

Have you though of eventually upgrading your CPU to balance out with your 3080ti, Noel? The 9900 wasn't a slouch, but I was rather surprised how much of a generational change in IPC, bandwidth and threading affected performance in MSFS.

Absolutely, in about 5y.  Gone are the days of doing frequent updates for me it's just not worth it any more.  Single thread performance differences are paltry I'm afraid.  I feel 9900K and 3080Ti are nearly perfectly matched w/ just enough headroom in case DX-12 is a net loser.  I don't even run my 9900K at the bleeding edge it's just not worth the heat, wear and tear and energy cost.  Because of this I am fairly assured of going 5-6y per build.  4.9Ghz now on all cores, and that is at 1.18v.  Going to 5.0gHzat 1.22v gets a whopping 2% increase which translates to absolutely nothing meaningful.   When I described turning down Terrain LOD from 300 to 220 in order to resume fluid vsync 30 at KSFO in the 787 HD bumping up the CPU another 100 would not have impacted that measurably at all.  A 10% change in CPU would have moved me from 25 to 27.5fps, which is still well below 30 which is critical for buttery smooth video.  I look for a 30-40% increase in thruput for both CPU and GPU as an indicator it's time to upgrade--I like to REALLY be impressed when I upgrade.  The prior build was a 3930K at 4.3Ghz and a GTX Titan that I ran P3D on for 6 years.  Needless to say, I was duly impressed when the current build went into service 1.5y ago.

For my next build hopefully MSFS will be halfway thru its purported 10y service life.  But here's the honest to goodness truth: already have buttery smooth stutter-free performance at maximum image quality.  I can run Terrain LOD at 400 in the air anywhere, but in complex airports in heavier planes that needs to go down to 220-230 or so.  And you should know the visual difference between the two is there for sure, but absolutely modest in terms of meaningful difference.

A bump up in minimum frames, but it's the frame pacing and reduction of stutters / mainthread drops that were most noticeable, Ian. That said, it is going to be interesting how much the equations change with DX12 and potentially things like DLSS and FSR down the road though, with those having the potential to push performance without the need for new hardware...

I stand corrected--when I looked at current single thread performance of I9-12900K it's around 42% faster than 9900K.  That's remarkable!  Fortunately I'm running it all maxed out and smooth no real need to change hardware.

The 3080ti labelling is a bit of a misnomer - technically the 3080TI is closer to being a 3090 with less RAM, not really a big brother for the 3080.

[...]

Just look at the numbers - the 3080 TI is clearly a 3090 with less ram and NOT some souped up version of the 3080

Boost Freq 1.70GHz 1.67GHz 1.71GHz
Cuda Cores 10496 10240 8704
Tensor Cores 328 320 272

^^This.

The 3080 Ti is a more affordable 3090 'lite'.

Expensive? Sure. Yet considering that a 3080 is currently only a couple of hundred £ cheaper than a 3080 Ti and a 3090 is usually £800 - £1,000 more, it made the most sense that spending that sort of money can ever make.

Getting hold of a GPU is still a lottery. When my choice was a 3080 Ti or stick with my old 1070, it was an easy decision and a decision I'm happy to have made.

I can run the game in Ultra + 300 Lod at 2K with my 2080Ti, so I see no reason to upgrade at the moment, I will wait for the next generation of GPUs and then replace my monitor to 4K at the same time.

Yea I’m wondering whether it would ever be worth me upgrading my GTX 1080ti. I run in 2k non VR.

My trusty old ASUS mobo with i5 4690 failed recently and a local PC builder supplied me with an ASUS Z590 and i7 11700k (yea I’ve heard but I’m happy - it’s all relative)  + 32GB 3MHz RAM, and transferred my old system and MSFS to a new fast SSD. I decided to keep my old GPU - it’s an overclocked FTW3 running at 1.94MHz. Of course new GPUs cost half as much again as my computer cost (about £1000) and no doubt will have millions more CUDA cores etc

MSFS is running smooth and sweet as expected, GPU is a bottleneck now, but I rarely see more than 7Gb VRAM usage on HIGH to ULTRA settings…40- 60 FPS pretty much anywhere now, rarely under 40, but I don’t use the FBW right now.

Anyone else upgrade from. GTX1080ti? Can’t do it right now but down the line?

Yes, I did, but it was so I could run 4k 100% scaling on a 4k monitor, with everything maxed-out.

The 1080Ti was generally alright at 2k with fairly high settings.  Only places like London brought it down, and that is with an old 8086K CPU (special edition 8700k) which I still use.

The 3080Ti can almost hit 60 FPS at my settings, but not quite, so I get stuttering, or more accurately frame skipping when I try it, as it tends to do about 55-57 FPS.
At least at 30 FPS it is amazingly smooth, cool, and quiet (about 55% utilisation).

I need a G-sync monitor to do better, but at 4k they are massively expensive.

1) what more do you need then? 40-60 fps is more than sufficient for MSFS.

2) I have, from a 1080ti to a RTX 3090, but that's because I have been running at native full 4K resolution and VR.

3) only if and only once you also upgrade to 4K resolution. by then you'll have saved enough $$ for a RTX 4090 😊
