December 16, 20214 yr Moderator I ran across an article this morning reporting the results of a survey in which the following question was posed: "Should schools in America teach Arabic numerals as part of their curriculum?" Fifty-six percent of the respondents answered "No"... Twenty-nine percent of respondents said that Arabic numerals should be taught in American schools, while the remaining 15 percent had no opinion. Poll: 56 percent of Americans don't want Arabic numerals taught in schools (fox10phoenix.com) Perhaps they would be happier if schools taught Roman numerals instead? Fr. December 16, 20214 yr Sorry to say but general culture in the USA leaves a lot to be desired, starting with Geography... I had some remarkable surprises talking to some fellow PhDs from USA univs when the theme was, for instance, World Geography... Other subjects like History of the World and the Civilizations leave also a LOT to be desired, yet here in Portugal in the late 70s, early 80s of last century I was taught and had to know about the USA History, the names of the presidents, the civil war... Ah, Charlie, I can think of plenty of target-rich environments where we could get interesting responses to this question, but I don’t want to go there & start something that would violate forum rules. How about fictional places? Like “Hooterville” or “Bugtussle”? To get another example, go to YouTube & search Jordan Klepper, he’s the modern day version of Mal Sharpe.
