The other alternative is to sell the car which actually brings in a lot of dosh, as they command high prices even with dodgy batteries. Or... take it to somewhere like The Electrified Garage where they repair Teslas at a fraction of the cost Tesla charge. And often repair the battery instead of replacing. But yes, Tesla's servicing and customer support is far from laudable. Its something that's lacking. If the article is read, it's pointed out that this is a "previously modified car" so in essence someone had messed about with it other than Tesla, and any "messing about" is something Tesla aren't fond of... which brings us back to dilemmas relating to "right to repair" balanced against the companies concern about amateurs opening up a battery pack and modifying a potential fire hazard. Most Tesla batteries are replaced under warranty but obviously the warranty is void if an amateur messes about with it. Ordinarily it's a generous 8 years or 150,000 miles. Warranty was void either because of its age or modifications. Batteries are expensive, but there were options other than YouTube clicks. But who knows these days, maybe the clicks were more profitable. The other point is that high battery cost is usually for early cars that were manufactured in low volumes. https://electrek.co/2021/12/23/tesla-owner-blows-up-model-s-dynamite-battery-replacement/ "What options does one have at that point? Quite a few actually: You can try to find a used battery pack, you can sell the car as non-functional and still get decent money for it, or you can sell it for parts." Most likely, while it's difficult to anticipate exactly how much a video is worth, this should give some idea:https://onezero.medium.com/this-is-how-much-youtube-paid-me-for-my-1-000-000-viewed-video-1453cad73847 Quote Here’s a video I made about the “Top 10 Features of the Tesla Model 3.” At the time of writing, the video had 2,057,000 views and had made $11,653.93. The subject is not very different, and the blowing up video ( as of today ) already has 4.7M views, and has been out for just 10 days so, I'd say it will likely exceed the car's value. And one of them is to strap some explosives to it, blow it up, and feel good about it. But after, I'd put the remains in a box and send them to Musk with a sympathy card. Then I'd REALLY feel good about it. Your car has been modified thus violating the warranty, your car battery is beyond the 8 year warranty period anyway, and the rest of the car itself is even further beyond the warranty... so you throw your dummy out of the pram and blow it up and blame the manufacturer. 🤣 What in gods name did this guy (and you) expect? Providing an 8 year warranty on a battery or 150,0000 miles is very generous. It's not Tesla's fault its beyond the warranty, or that you modified it. But then people seem to conjure up different, unrealistic, demands if its a Tesla compared to other car manufacturers. Worth remembering that a model S is a very high performance vehicle that out accelerates some Ferrari's, now you wouldn't expect a dirt cheap Ferrari engine would you, or Ferrari to decide to forget about warranty duration and give you a free engine. Batteries are expensive especially early Model S batteries when production numbers were low. Anybody who blows up a car that could have been fixed cheaply by one of the many garages that have sprung up that are fixing Tesla's, or rather than ploughing back a ton of dosh from the parts, is either very wealthy or downright stupid. In reality of course, the people behind this stunt knew exactly what they were doing, and knew they could make more money from an out of warranty car with a YouTube stunt by monetising the Tesla haters.
