The surprise I got with the Kodiak

Featured Replies

I got the Kodiak for a Christmas Present for myself, and this is the only aircraft I fly now. The only thing I was disappointed with, was having to go from steam gauges which is how I got my PPL years ago, to a Glass Panel G 1000. I thought I would never get used to it. The first thing i did was to install the G 1000 NXI version from the Market Place, which was free. In he beginning I was very confused by all the buttons and dials, and different screen, so I turned to Youtube, and started watching tutorial videos. Gradually I learned more and about this NXI version, and little by little I realized I was having as much fun flying with the G 1000 as I was with the aircraft. First of all Working Title Must be some kind of genius to figure out all the things that this G 1000 can do , and improve on them. I mean, everything just works, and not only does it work, it works perfectly.

I just did three flights this morning in the Kodiak, I used Vnav on the G 1000 to control my descent from cruise to approach, and it even shows you the upcoming altitude constraints so you can set the altimeter for the next step down. Then I go to the procedure screen and pick the approach and runway I am going to arrive with. It lists the waypoints on the approach, and shows you them on the MFD screen as you fly the approach. If it is an Rnav approach, it is just like flying an ILS with the G 1000, glide slope right to the runway.  If I am flying an ILS, it  switches from GPS mode to Nav mode, sets the frequency for the LOC, and the course for the runway, automatically. If there is a procedure turn or hold, it does that with ease.   Another great feature is flying in very mountainous terrain like in New Guinea, or Alaska, and the Terrain feature shows where you can fly and how high you have to be to avoid hitting the terrain. This mode is totally accurate, I have been threading my way through the mountains in New Guinea, like the Missionary Pilot.  😉

I have just touched on a few of the capabilities that this G 1000 NXI has, it is fantastic.

Anyway, for the people that have not installed the NXI version of the G 1000, you have no idea what you are missing. https://www.workingtitle.aero/packages/nxi/

You can even set the final approach altitude before you press Vnav and it will take you down step by step automatic.

Nice one Bob!  I am enjoying the Kodiak G100NXi also.  I have barely scratched the surface of what the NXi can do, but I really like it.

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Call me old fashioned, but I prefer to fly my LPV/Waas' manually. I set it up on the gps and cdi but then never turn on the a/p. I just ride the f/d all the way down myself. The GNS units are supposed to have similar functionality as far as the LPV approaches and their associated f/d and g/s guidance. I love these types of approaches because it means being able to get into many smaller airports in bad weather than when using ILS only, as it was years ago.

You can fly them manually with the G 1000 too, just disconnect the AP.

Yep, that's what I do...fun stuff.

Yes I fly the Kodiak pretty much exclusively now.

I use a combination of steam backup and G1000's NXI of course.

I use AirManager to display and control the instruments. It is so much easier to use the hardware Knobster to dial in the numbers etc.

Below is a screen shot of one of todays flights.

Great post about a great plane with a great device! I got the Kodiak as a birthday present from one of my sons. I also never really liked glass in GA (I have an Airbus for that! And I bought the more expensive version of MSFS just for the analogue C172!) but just like you I am extremely happy with it! Didn't really expect that! I thought following the magenta line in a GA was boring! But there is so much you can do with the G1000 NXi and it is so convenient...! Loving every minute with this all! I may do one flight with the FBW A32NX a week but all other flights are done in my beloved Kodiak!

Very nice! Actually, beautifully arranged setup! You have more info displayed in that sim setup than most aircraft will ever see in real life!

The SWS  Kodiak in connection with the WT G1000 nxi is absolutely FAB U LESS !

I am really addicted to it at the moment. I was also a „steam gauges“ fan until I took the opportunity to dig into the fascination of the G1000 nxi capabilities. you can fly this plane totally automatic from takeoff until above the threshold - better than any other aircraft in MSFS at the moment.

everything is working top of the notch and it is so much fun to fly it.

Indeed! I also like the full VNAV (and RNAV) support! You can even fly a fully guided approach (on AP if you want to) into the smallest PNG grass strip! (https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/612955-how-to-create-an-approach-for-every-runway-g1000-nxi/) Another great feature not mentioned here yet is the preview of all the approaches you get when you need to select them! Very nice!

I showed my wife this photo, and she said "Don't get any ideas ..."

Truly great achievement by WT the NXi is. Only Garmin missed the boat a little by not including a keypad somehow but reverted to the Enigma way of doing things :))

That is where the Garmin G3000 comes in.

Although some aircraft do have a keypad installed with the G1000, I believe it is an aircraft specific choice.

And WT simulates this, by including a keyboard entry option with their G1000 NXi..

Aye.

As a user of both real units it takes me 1/10th of the time to program a flightplan in the touchscreen based Garmin G3X vs the inner/outer knob G1000.

The G1000 Interface feels very old by todays standards.
