Aerosoft CRJ 550/700: can you recommend it?

Featured Replies

I've been on the fence on this because I do want a regional jet but then reading their forum about multiple significant bugs has left me less than enthusiastic about parting w/ the $50 for it, at this point in time.  Can't tell whether these issues are operator error, or real, etc.  Apparently it's not been updated since 11/30/21, but the dev says they have not abandoned it.  Perhaps their hamstrung w/ the SDK to solving these issues.   Please chime in if you will about your experience with it if you own it.  Thanks in advance

Noel

Yes. It's working perfectly fine and while there maybe bugs I haven't noticed anything for a good while. Most of the stuff from the early days has been fixed, so that's why there wasn't any big update I guess.
The CRJ is rather complicated/unusual to handle, especially if you are only used to the A320, so some "bugs" may really be pilot's error after all (or how the real airplane is in fact). I'm not a fan of Aerosoft at all and I usually only like study-level airliners, but I am quite happy with the CRJ. I usually describe it like this: The CRJ may not be study level but Aerosoft did a very good job in not making you notice it (most of the time).
As for a regional airliner this will be the only valid plane for a long time, I think.

For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.

I got if last fall on sale for $36usd IIRC. At that price, I am not disappointed. It's fairly feature rich and is stable and performs well in the sim. One minor personal gripe is the flight path icon in the HUD seems off. At the regular price, I'd perhaps be more critical.

I think that it's great.  I fly it exclusively in VR and it is a delight.   It (I say it - both the 500 and 700 are similar in most respects) does take some 'proper flying', though - careful use of trim and throttle, particularly in climb to altitude, and, again, at landing with the added challenge of how much flap and when - but this all makes it feel like the real deal.

Having found it challenging at first, and now those difficulties have 'mysteriously' drifted away, I realise that it was my flying and not Aerosoft's modelling.  It's VERY satisfying when you get it right.

Super cabin crew announcements too  🙂

My favourite of the more sophisticated passenger aircraft that are starting to become available.

Maybe there are still some bugs around, but none that I can think of...and I've flown both models a LOT.

Yes.

It has a few bugs still (which are not showstoppers for me) but I would recommend it.  When it comes to regional jets in the sim, you have the CRJ or the Embraer 170s by VirtualCol.  So there is no choice - buy the CRJ!!!!!

Well it sounds hopeful thanks I appreciate it!  It will be something new to learn and I'm okay w/ that piece.

Still bugs on my side, like TOD info missing sometimes, or randomly the HDG sync will not work, HUD is missing a lot of stuff and acting weird and last update was some time ago.

Also have a look at their forum to get an idea on customer support.

I personally would not recommend it, and wait a bit for the review of the BAE146.

I have no issues with it at all, but I do nothing fancy with it,  I basically just type in a sim-brief flight plan and fly. Be aware it is not going to fly like an Airbus or Boeing.

I am sorry for my purchase.  The wide use of non-standard control setups may make it better but drives me crazy trying to setup my system to fly her.  I have used Axis and Ohs and other methods to figure some of it out but in the end, just gave up.  I use the Honeycomb Alpha and Bravo plus a MIAP to control the MCPs but some things are just a mystery to me.

Waiting for PMDG 737.

I am really disappointed with Aerosoft support policy.

For a long time, there are issues that are reported by many users among them real CRJ pilots with no reactions from Aerosoft.

It looks like the CRJ is abandoned project while they are putting their ressources on others projects, maybe the ATR for Asobo…money first.

It is a pity because the CRJ is a very interesting aircraft and the basis is really good. It only need more robust LNAV behavior and few others things like GPWS and some systems tweaks.

Why does it always happen when I make a decision then follows the litany of negativity 😟

Good bird but Aerosoft is incredibly slow/uninterested in fixing and patching it.

There are a couple of lingering issues, namely lateral navigation has a tendency to overshoot before correcting, and the TOC / TOD calculations are busted. TOC and TOD show different values depending on which screen you look at, and the values are messed up.

Be sure to pick FS2crew if you pick the CRJ too! On sale currently: https://fs2crew.com/product/fs2crew-aerosoft-crj-edition/

Ah - well yes.  In my case, it will be the Aerosoft CRJ-500  and the BAe146 😉   I have had the 146 in X-plane for some time and it is stunningly good...but it is a slightly different technology - even more 'old-school'.

And yes!  There IS a bug I've come across, thinking about it.  If you have the Master Battery/Alternator/Avionics1/Avionics2 on HOTAS switches, they MUST be all turned 'ON' (even though in the CRJ cockpit nothing will happen) otherwise the autopilot will not engage.  Probably related to this issue too @bendead  Thanks for the reminder

Because some just can't let you enjoy an aircraft for what it is! Lol 😆
