Thunder and lightning

Featured Replies

Spring is T storm in the South East US, haven't seen any lightning or heard any thunder in months. Has Asobo just deleted it permanently?

Kind of. The live weather is severely broken and the clouds are horrible. We get one "type" and that is a cumulus like puffs and even those are not opaque just light transparent puffs.

Storms are sometimes generated by the live weather system but in general once the system can actually create a thunderstorm (where a METAR is not close by) they are pale to a real thunderstorm; never extending more than about 5,000 feet in height. We all know Thunderstorms can reach over 35,000 feet in height.

Lightning? Yah, I saw some last week in live weather near Cuba - and it was pretty cool too, there were "horizontal" bolts and they were very fast flashes as one would expect lightning to be. It only happened like two times and there were not enough supporting clouds to make it look like a storm was even there (just those annoying small cumulus "puffs". So it seems at some point Asobo updated the lightning, but it is broken.

I noticed it went M.I.A. with live weather somewhere around SU9.....  I posted on the same topic around April 29 when we were having a few butt kicking storms out here in the middle of the U.S. Haven't really gotten much intel myself with lightning and live weather.

This is some of the intel I acquired but didn't really tell me much about live weather.  So I am afraid they deleted it.

The best real world, real time weather these days is available in P3dV5.The best weather radar in aircraft is also P3d - in PMDG, FSL and the Maddog.

You mean you don't have to buy Active Sky any more?  Shame the scenery in P3D looks like 20 years ago.

Actually the scenery does not look "like 20 years ago". As to buying Active sky - that is your choice as is the purchase of add-on scenery.

Oh please, I flew P3D for years, and tried latest version on a friends PC, it still looks like flatten wallpaper scenery unless you spend a fortune with Orbx, and even then, not good.

You really shouldn't mention this when Bob is around 😂

 Vote with your wallet.

It went away when they fixed it happening too much.

Looks like they fixed it too hard.

I've only seen one thunder storm in the sim since that fix.

If people still think P3D looks good compared to MSFS you gotta be on some good stuff.

Running i5-9600K @ 4.8ghz - 32GB DDR4 3200mhz - GTX 3070.

I just saw lightning at LIMC... but it was mostly clear skies.

Depends if you define the "best" as the most accurate to the metar data, or if visuals and immersion also are valid points for "best". After decades of 2d weather, these days I rather take an inaccurate cloud type in volumetric 3d and excellent lighting over a correct 2d cloud sprite. Especially since the important part - airport weather - is mostly correct and realistic in MSFS by now.
That said, thunder and lightning are not in an acceptable state in MSFS.

For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.

That’s what we get with Asobo and Meteofail. Shame. So many things about this Sim have so much potential but fall flat right before the finish line.
