Low FPS with Decent Hardware?

Featured Replies

Hey everyone, just redownloaded MSFS and I was trying to fly around and I noticed that my FPS is super low, like 20 fps with a 12 fps 99%.

My specs are:

CPU: i5-11600K

RAM: GSKILL 32GB DDR4 3200MHz

MB: ASUS Prime Z590-A

GPU: EVGA 3070 Ti

Storage: Samsung 980 Pro

According to the developer mode, I'm GPU limited, but the GPU is barely being used, about 30-40%. CPU is also not being used that much, max core usage was 50% at any given time. I'm really scratching my head since it looks like MSFS isn't using all of my hardware and I don't know why. And yes, my display driver is updated.

There was a pinned thread concerning this for some time.  However it just got un-pinned a few days ago, as a result it is not lost in the clutter.  You may find it again scanning the next 3-4 pages.

Make sure the sim is using the GTX and not the onboard iGPU. Also important to set the audio device to the correct one.

Maybe my expectations are too high, what FPS should I be looking to get with my hardware? I've followed some tips and I got it locked at a pretty steady 30FPS at 1080p, but I feel like I should be able to get more than that.

what's  your msfs graphic settings?

No, something is up with that setup. Hopefully others can chime in to help more. I just know with that setup, you shouldn't be getting those FPS numbers.

Depends a lot on where you are and what you are flying. Places like Atlanta and Los Angeles are hard on fps (largely because of the photogrammetry).

As a reference, I routinely get 30 fps on my oldish computer at 2560x1440 without any « tip» with all settings on high and a few on ultra, LOD at 150. Check that your case is properly ventilated and your MB/video card clean of dust. Also check what other processes are running in the background.

Simming since 1981 -  [email protected] GHz with 16 GB of RAM and a 1080 with 8 GB VRAM running a 27" @ 2560*1440 - Windows 10 - Warthog HOTAS - MFG pedals - MSFS Standard version with Steam

Try default graphics card and msfs grapgics settings and see what your fps is then.  Of course make sure your onboard graphics is disabled too.

Awful advice when there's an actual issue going on. Akin to having your car smoke and sputter and then recommend you just close the hood and enjoy the drive.

Like most, you forgot to say what resolution you run the sim. 4K or Full HD make a big difference. Moreover, this sim is also depending on the reload of scenery via the Net.

Are you sure, that you have the monitor connected directly to the graphic card output and not to the mainboard output? With your hardware you must get more than 30fps everywhere.

Are you still having the issue? Do you get 20fps most of the time, or was it a one-off situation at a specific airport? Which aircraft? With your rig you *should* be able to get decent performance.

Anyway I wrote a guide a few days ago about MSFS performance and what to do if performance is low. Might be helpful.

My best guess in your situation is, checking nvidia control panel: programs/ MSFS2020, check if "prefer maximum performance" option is active. Otherwise your graphics card might be clocking down for power saving reasons. I had that once with same symptoms as you have.

Good luck
