Anyone tried the mod to use google map instead of Bing?

Featured Replies

You need to set it to run with admin privileges just like I do for MSFS.

I wouldn't even call it a mod: nothing is running inside the game. How can it make it unstable when it's just downloading the same tiles from a different server?

A.

There are many people not so lucky that had big trouble when using this "add-on", "mod" or whatever, as reported in the MSFS Official Forums.

Well so far I see zero difference in what the scenery looks like with this mod, versus the default scenery. The  only thing that is different is I got a message that popped up, that said there was a server problem or something and I was now offline. never got another pop up that said I was back online again so I don't know if the word not allowed is even working. When I open the program it says 0 data usage, whatever that means.  LOL...... Right now it kind of looks like I remember P3D looking.

Does this cause anyone else's initial sim startup to take forever?

Yes Bob, the reports I read on the Official Forums are mostly related to connection issues, similar to the one you mention (but not only that, there are so many others related to CTD's, etc.). I've never used this mod and I don't think I will.

I run it every single time I want to fly VFR. Looks like South America (or at least, Argentina, Brazil and Colombia) are neglected by Bing, and using Google Maps is a must.

Yes, when I land I am deleting the entry it made in windows 32 and place it in the dumpster. My scenery was fine prior to installing this, and now it looks like garbage.

When you open this program does it show any data usage?

Yes, it reports some data usage stats. I only look at them after shutting down MSFS, when I'm deactivating the mod. Obviously, the values will be zero just after enabling the mod, before firing up MSFS

Just looked at their forum and many complaints like what I am seeing. This app is buggy.

How is this for some great looking scenery

Great! I was going to ask what was best for South America.  Google it is then 🙂

As long time users have said it's very area dependent when it comes to what maps to use.  I tried Google in the UK and it wasn't nice where i flew, patchy, poor and inconsistent colours, wasn't great at all.  Switched to the new Bing and it looked fantastic.

Time to head to South America....

Just tried starting it up again and got two CTDs in a row.  while MSFS was loading. First CTD  in a year.

I just uninstalled the mod. loading times for MSFS went back to normal ( they were much longer with mod installed) and no CTDs on startup. Thank goodness.

Dunno if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but:

- The mod modifies the hosts file when you click on 'start flying' (.hosts is located in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\ and has to be started before MSFS launch.

- When you hit 'Stop mod', the hosts fiile modification is reverted back to it's 'normal' state - BUT: IF you just close the mod, the entries made to redirect MSFS to google's servers stay there (in the hosts file), so you for sure will have connection problems next time starting up MSFS without  the mod. YOU MUST hit 'Stop mod' when you end MSFS. With this procedure it works reliably.

I've learned this the hard way. I - and you - have to remember to 'Stop' the mod - not just to close it

If you have connection problems , take a look at your hosts file. On a dedicated MSFS system it should be empty.

It slowed my load in time alot, until I uninstalled it.

There seems to be (at least) two key aspects for running this mod correctly:

1) Run it in admin mode before launching MSFS.

2) Stop the mod, don’t just shut it down, for the changes to the hosts file to revert back to normal.
