Moving over to MSFS from P3D

Featured Replies

Hi guys. Have questions to ask please and appreciate your help. Been out of P3D since 2020 and haven’t flown since. Thinking of coming back now and just move over to MSFS. Was flying all study level aircrafts.
1. How’s the fps on MSFS compared to P3D V4.5? With AIG AI traffic as much as possible. Like to fly with AI traffic and mostly offline.
2. I assume no longer able to do like FS9 where you can set everything to max and 100% AI and still get above 30fps! 😅 so what can we expect here? Better than P3D? Assuming smooth performance with decent AI and settings on the high end.
3. What kind of pc specs should we go for to achieve number 2?
Thank You! 🙏🏼

Do you have a pc at the moment and if so, what are it’s specs?

You will be surprised by how well MSFS performs even on a quad core CPU (with Hyperthreading) and a mid range GPU.

If you have to buy a PC now and want advice, specify the budget.

Depends on what resolution you play on. Do you play on 1080p, or 1440p, or 4K? Are you playing in VR?

I play on 1080p resolution on a 23 inch monitor.  I am not using AIG though, and I have yet to buy the PMDG 737 (I am waiting for the PMDG 737-800). I am using the FBW A320 though, and I've read the FPS for the FBW A320 is comparable to the PMDG 737.

My computer specs are in my signature. For me, most of my settings are on Ultra (Ultra is the highest setting in MSFS). A few sliders, such as Render Scaling, are not set at the maximum for me, because I see little visual benefit if I set it a maximum, whereas if I lower it some, I get a boost in performance. So you can say most of my settings are at the maximum, except for a few settings, such as Render Scaling.

I usually get between 48 FPS to 60 FPS, depending on the area I am flying in. So at least for me, playing at 1080p, my hardware specs are more than enough for MSFS.

i5-12400, RTX 3060 Ti, 32 GB RAM

In my case I actually built a new rig in 2021 to be able to properly play MFS / FS 2020.

It's a Ryzen 5600x with an "inexpensive" Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB GPU.

I am using a 1 x 500 GB ( just for the OS and ancillary aps ) + 1 x 1TB ( just for the flightsims ) Nvme 2 disks, and they also make a whole lot of a difference in terms of performance.

I can only recmmend going Windows 11 too if you have the chance. It's an amazing OS and for me it made a difference at least in terms of stability and in use with DX12, which kept beoing a problem in Win 10.

I am on 2k, Vsync @ half monitor refresh rate ( 30 fps ) which is more than good and gives me in MFS a performance I had never ever experienced in any other flight simulator with the exception of maybe AEFS 2.

My home internet is announced as 200 Mbps, cable, and it gives near that rate most of the time, but even on slower days I never had problems with online features such as AI and Photogrammetry + Bing maps.

I do have a pc which i was flying P3D V4.5 but i am thinking of getting new PC and will use this PC elsewhere.

Here's the current spec:

Windows 10 Pro 64 bit (Can't update to Windows 11)

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti

Intel Core i7-7700K CPU @ 4.20GHZ

16GB Ram

Samsung Monitor SAMSUNG LU32R590CWEXXT 31.5" VA 60Hz (Thinking about getting Samsung G9 Neo although not priority, rather spend on PC first and add ons)

I am thinking USD 5,000 + -, flexible | Long term investments ready for PMDG 737 747 777 FSLABS A320 etc etc basically what i was flying in P3D V4.5 | Not sure when those will be released!

Thank you so much! I am going to build new rig for this too!

Planning one SSD for Windows and another SSD for Flight sim solely. Recommendations are welcomed!

Thank You!

If you have space on your current PC, you can try MSFS on your current PC. At 1080p, I think MSFS would do fine on your current PC.

i5-12400, RTX 3060 Ti, 32 GB RAM

5K USD is a lot of money now that the GPUs have returned to normal prices 🙂

Currently the state of art for MSFS is the Ryzen 5800X3D + RTX 3090 with 32 GB of RAM (3200 - 3600 MHz is OK) and a GSync ultrawide monitor.

With the remaining budget you can buy accessories (yoke, pedals, etc.) and a VR headset if you like VR.

If you’re running a 1080p screen you’re current pc will have no problems running MSFS2020 at the moment.

I’m running on an i7 3930k and an rtx270.

Yeah, I agree with @MrFuzzy@swadeep, you don't need to spend 5K on a computer to run MSFS.  MSFS runs surprisingly well on PCs cheaper than that, even at 4K. My best advice to you @swadeep is to play MSFS on the computer you have now.

Wait for the NVidia 4000 series to come out this fall. Then when the NVidia 4000 series comes out, consider spending on a new computer then.

@swadeep

1) Whatever FPS you had in P3D v4.5, MFS will look much better at that FPS. I base this on personal experience of running both sims on the same system.

2) You have slightly better specs than my old machine, and I was running at 1440p. Most things were set High and I'd generally achieve above 20 fps without stutters even when things got demanding. I did disabled photogrammetry scenery but you don't have to.

3) My current PC specs (in my signature and profile) more than achieve 2, although you would want a better graphics card. A £1500 even with current graphics card prices, would get you a decent build, although I'd be minded to wait until later in the year when RTX4000s start to appear.

One thing you might want to consider when moving from P3D to MSFS: Keep FS Global Real Weather installed.

I've used FSGRW for weather in P3D. In MSFS you don't need it for the weather but for the wind data.

Since I still don't like Simbrief for a couple reasons, I still use PFPX for my flightplanning.

With PFPX you get extremely accurate OFP results when downloading "latest weather" via FSGRW, cause PFPX is accessing a lot of different wx and wind data from this program.

So, if you use PFPX, you might want to keep FSGRW too 😉

Hi there.

Well....I am a P3D Beta Tester....and it's hard to get back to P3d since I use MSFS.

My 2d screen and VR experience is superior in MSFS. I have never had a sim so smooth then MSFS is at the moment.

Using most of the settings to high and ultra in VR (Varjo Aero with ipd 37) and everything maxed out, except terrain and building LOD 200, in 2d screen when not using VR.

I needed ca  2 weeks to get used to Msfs...I can't go back anymore due the world in MSFS being so full of life, weather and beautiful scenery.

I mainly fly the FENIX A320 and FBW A320Neo.

Marcus

I was, up until 4 months ago, running a GTX 1080 Ti with 4790K cpu at 4.4GHz.  On a 1440P monitor.  I was getting about 30 fps with ultra settings at most areas.  Areas like NYC with photogrammetry enabled, and heavy clouds with addons (like Aerosoft CRJ etc), my fps would drop into the teens - but only in those demanding scenarios.  On my new system (same gpu), 12700K / 32GB ddr5 ram, I get about double the fps in most scenarios.

With your system at 1440P resolution or less, you could easily run high settings and be doing really well.   I love eye candy so I want to run LOD 400 and ultra clouds (two of the biggest cpu hitters) - so even on my new rig, at times I'll be into the 20's again hehe.  I wouldn't run LOD past 200 on your current system.

FPS is actually better than in P3D, with or without AIG. I'd say it's 20 to 30% higher framerate on my system (Ryzen 5600x, 1080ti).

EDIT: To be fair I had a CPU update since then, before I had a Ryzen 3600.
