MSFS Just Lost all my Settings!!

Featured Replies

Folks

Bizarre thing has just happened.  Started up MSFS and it commenced taking me through setup screens - for graphics, assistance etc etc.  Decided to close it down and restart the PC.  Same thing.  This time I went through it and chose to customise each of the settings to the best of my memory.  Got through all that and it eventually started, but all my keyboard settings, mouse setting and joystick settings are gone!  All my camera views are all gone too!!

Plus the damned music is playing.  This has never happened before and been with MSFS from day one.

Any ideas - please help

I have had it reset or lose all my settings a couple of times, but it has never lost my camera views of hardware configuration.

MSFS 2024. Primary Planes: Black Square TBM850, Duke, Baron, Caravan; A2A Comanche; FSReborn Phenom; Fexix A321; PMDG 737-7, 777: Utilities: Active Sky (Passive Mode); BATC, FSLTL.

I have had this happen once before but it was a while ago.  I have control settings for each aircraft so it was a PITA to redo all of them.  I actually had all of my graphics settings reset a couple days ago but that was not a big deal to fix.  I wonder if there is somewhere else this info is stored on our PC so we are able to back it up?

Yes, if you mean controller profiles, they are stored locally on your desktop and probably also in the cloud. They're in the cloud for sure in the Steam version. If somebody somewhere made 100 profiles in the Controller screen of MSFS on their first day with MSFS and later deleted them all and made another 100 over the next year, then all 200 are still stored away in a folder on their desktop.

I'm not even sure how to get rid of some of my old ones, even if I wanted to. One time I was using File Explorer and deliberately deleted a few of my old profiles in File Explorer that I had wanted never to see again. The next time I booted MSFS, Steam had poofed them all back into existence into that folder on my desktop.

Maybe we remember after one Sim Update MSFS would not boot up for anyone using a mouse profile other than the default. MSFS posted a work around later that same day about how to delete that profile in file explorer and then MSFS would bootup, but the default mouse profile would now be the operative one. Meanwhile the cloud would restore the deleted profile on the next MSFS bootup, but the default would still be the operative one.

The next day after that disastrous Sim Update, MSFS had a mandatory patch that cured the issue and everybody forgot about it.

Is my the path to controller profiles. Someone told me Steam assigns random numbers to these folder names, so it varies.

The profile files have no .xxx 3 letter extension. But they are just text and can be read in notepad. Which will let you read all the assignments for each controller button or key in the profile.

Happened to me after a crash several times and darned annoying to say the least.  Whilst all the graphics settings had to be redone and all the assistance got mucked up, at least my controller settings were not lost.

Not sure what is going on here or why this happens after a crash.

Same here but my controllers went back to default and I was able to re select them with the arrows on the controller page

You haven't said which version (MS Store/Xbox or Steam) you are running, but if it's the former have you tried signing out of MS Store and Xbox app and signing back in? Always a chance it will connect back up to your saved cloud settings. Certainly won't do any harm to try.

OS:     Win11 Home; Mobo: Asus TUF Gaming Z690-Plus WiFi D4; CPU: Intel i5-12400 (Alder Lake) 4.4 GHz
RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR4 64Gb (4x16GB) 3600 MHz; GPU:  MSI Radeon RX 5700XT [8GB]
SSD:  Corsair Force MP510 (for OS);  2x 1TB & 1x 2TB Sabrent Rocket Nvme PCIe 4.0 (one for sim, two for addons)
HDD:  Seagate 3TB (Data); Seagate 1TB (Programs), ASUS TUF Gaming VG32VQ1B Curved 31.5" monitor, 1440p, 38Mbs ethernet

Fulcrum One Yoke, Honeycomb Bravo throttle, Thrustmaster Airbus TCA sidestick & throttle, Logitech Pro pedals, Xbox wireless gamepad (1st gen)

Yep had this happen as well. It sucked since I had to do some resetting. I also have the team version. It has to do with the steam saved profile is my best guess.

I've done an initial install and 2 complete reinstalls and in both reinstalls all settings including controller and camera were saved so presumably is cloud-based backup.  Vanilla install on a single drive same as OS, and thru the MS Store.

Same here, I’m in store version and it is confirmed that all settings are stored in the cloud.
One question please, Why in the sim I appear Offline and not possible to choose any server?

Please Advise

Are you sure they are lost and that the game has not just reverted to some other keyboard & joystick profile?

Check the settings and scroll through the profiles. This happened to me once. I thought I had lost it all but saw that the game had preselected "Default Profile" when in fact mine were saved in "Keyboard Profile 1"

Sidenote
Is there a config file we can backup anyway to guard against total loss? I agree with the OP that when this does happen its a real pain in the behind to config it all again.

You were absolutely right.  I managed to stumble upon this when I was troubleshooting.  Thanks
