So with a 5 year old machine running an i9 and RTX2080Ti card, is there any benefit to even trying DX12?

Is DX12 essentially a configuration for people who have relatively new systems or at least 3000 series GPUs?

Perhaps will I suggest all users to optimize the sim as suggested by GeForce Experience.

Could not agree more. Outstanding performance in the PMDG 737 with fps in the high 30s-low 40s using DX12 and DLSS (quality). I am dealing with the glass panel blur by using the GeForce Experience Game filter setting for sharpness. Just a touch of sharpening does the trick without oversharpening the rest of the image. Add a bit of gamma correction to lighten the cockpit midtones and it's good.

Systems specs should be in the signature.

DX12 can potentially be of benefit to all systems, as CPU utilization is much better than with DX11.

Currently DX11 with TAA as DX12 with anything is not smooth on my system. I have a 10850K and a 2080Ti.

The odd thing is that the 1st SU10 beta was excellent on my system in DX12. They removed the optimizations, and DX12 hasn't been good for me ever since. I'm not sure that I believe the optimizations are in the release version because I had stellar performance in the first beta. I know for sure that they were actually in there and I'm not even close to where I was. I'm going to play around with it some more, but I didn't need to do anything to get it working before.

It seems the 30X0s are doing better with the current release / drivers combination and DX12 than the 20X0s.

That being said, DX11 + TAA are performing wonderfully and everything looks beautiful. I'm happy.

I just completed (4) samples to for purposes judge clarity of the cockpit and glass panel(s).  I do a lot more flying than sightseeing so clarity in the cockpit is most important to me.  System specs are in my message footer.  Using the updated game ready driver 517.48.  Did a complete uninstall/cleanse of previous driver before installation.  All evaluated in the Hjet, true 4K, Render Scale 100, mostly Ultra settings, T LOD 200, O LOD 100.  Four samples were:

DLSS, AMD Sharpening 200, DX12,  46/49 FPS range
DLSS, AMD Sharpening 200, DX11,  54/58 FPS range
TAA. AMD Sharpening 200, DX12,  50/52 FPS range
TAA, AMD Sharpening 200, DX11  53/54 FPS range

Clearly (no pun intended) DX11 was a winner over DX12 both with DLSS and TAA. My FPS was marginally better with DLSS, but not enough to make a difference as I normally use Vsync and lock my FPS at 30 (now 50%).

Yesterday I completed a flight in the Hjet with DLSS/DX11, AMD sharpening set to 140, and I felt that from 10,000 feet on initial approach over a forest the spanse of trees lacked the definition I typically see on that approach with TAA/DX11, AMD sharpening at 100. I have not gone back to the same altitude, speed and location. Likely the light would have changed anyway.

Based on what I am seeing I am sticking with TAA/DX11, and may play around with the AMD sharpening slider a bit, which can be done without restarting MSFS.

Thanks for these results. I'm currently running DX12/TAA and I'm quite happy with that. DLSS works fine too, but there's not really a huge advantage for me, and I have the headroom on my GPU.

Does AMD sharpening work with nVidia cards and drivers? I have found a modest sharpening with the GeForce Experience overlay to restore adequate crispness to the flat panel displays in the PMDG 737. Should I be using AMD sharpening instead?

Many thanks as always.

DX11 TAA are smoothest for me, I got performance loss over add on scenery (ESSB Stockholm) with DX 12.

Well...I wouldn't be so quick to state that. I suspect your 2080ti would provide benefits under DX12.  It's easy to switch back and forth to test.

I too have a 5 year old machine (it'll be 5 years old this December)...that being an 8700K but with a 2021-vintage 3080ti in it.
On that config DX12 works a little better* than DX11.  Now -- how would it have worked with my 1080ti, the gfx card I used to run with the 8700K?  I don't know, but it is possible that what you suggest, would have happened -- that DX11 would in fact run better...but I'll never know I guess.

"Better" as hereinabove mentioned is defined as smoother.  Although I'm not really interested in frame rate to a point, in my case (8700K + 3080ti) the raw framerate is a little higher in DX12, albeit not much higher.  As for stability --- not determined yet.  I had a CTD in DX12 mode last night but I had flown for 5 hours straight and literally abused the sim session (dozens of task switches to GPU-Z, and other programs as I tested, etc.).

Yes. Just give it a try, see what you prefer. I use a fair bit of sharpening with reshade, and default sharpening is off in usercfg.opt. Many methods will work.

So I’m using a 1070 which isn’t compatible with DLSS.  I’m also running an i7 4790k 4Ghz CPU which is old I know.  Im pretty much CPU limited.  I tried DX12 for the first time yesterday using the new game ready driver in the PMDG 737 out of Aerosoft EBBR and it was pretty smooth - one thing I noticed is all threads of my CPU were being evenly used, instead of CPU 0 pegged high.  Am I right in thinking one of the benefits of DX12 is better usage of the CPU?  If that’s the case in my scenario using an older system better use of CPU utilisation can only be a good thing and prevent 100% spikes and therefore stutters?

Yes. AMD originally developed the sharpening algorithm. But it works beautifully on Nvidia cards as well.
