November 14, 20223 yr Is anyone here driving a car more than 20 years old? https://simpleflying.com/oldest-jets-in-the-american-airlines-fleet-2022/ Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
November 14, 20223 yr Moderator Yes, I own a 24 year old Toyota Camry, which is still running quite well. I put new tires on it about four years ago and they are still in excellent condition. They do suffer from extremely slow leaks (several months), which has prompted me to purchase an inexpensive air pump from Harbor Freight. I noticed yesterday that when I went to leave Krogers (supermarket) I had to re-inflate the two front tires to their recommended 32 pounds pressure... I am praying that this car will last me until EOL, since there is no possibility that I can buy a replacement vehicle and living 9.2 miles from the nearest grocery store would make shopping extremely difficult! November 14, 20223 yr Administrators Any tire with slow leaks would probably have tiny, thin nails or screws in them. I had wire staple go into one of mine and the tire guy checked it by inflating the tire and submerging in the water tub. No leaks detected, so he pulled the tire off the rim and felt inside the tire until he felt the sharp point sticking through. November 14, 20223 yr Author My wife owns a three year old Camry. If she keeps it for 24 years she'll be 107 years old. But it's only got 7,000 miles on it so if she drives it for another 24 years it should have about 60,000 miles on it and still be in pretty good shape. We don't drive that much anymore and certainly not cross country trips. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
November 14, 20223 yr Nothing wrong with old stuff. Here's my 23 year old horse, with my 25 year old car behind her: Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
November 14, 20223 yr Twenty year old Toyota Tacoma. 4WD, I love very rough jeep trails deep into back country. Despite the rough use, it runs as new. Never any repair charges (just bolt on a new starter bendix myself, etc.). The chainstore lube and oil shops are so cheap I don't do that myself. Wasn't hard to choose. Consumer Reports satisfaction/repair charts. For the umpteenth year in a row Toyota pickups were the most reliable in the charts. November 14, 20223 yr Author My 2019 Toyota Prius is our 7th Toyota. We've been driving them for years. It only has 2500 miles on it so it should be the last one I buy in this lifetime. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.

I decided that it would be less expensive in the long run to spend $40 for a 12vdc time air pump with gauge than to have a tire shop inspect the tires and repair any slow leaks. I may just try using a can of leak fixer, as many have reported good results. It is also possible that there is a speck of dirt or a tiny rock in the beads of the tires. Fr. November 15, 20223 yr It's not that old, but my 2012 Honda Civic has about 320,000 miles on it. I recently had to replace the starter...and finally got around to replacing the rear brakes for the first time about 2 weeks ago. When I worked at USAir, we had the oldest 757 fleet, and the newest. We had Eastern's original fleet, plus factory new ones. When I worked for a particular corporate flight department, we had the highest time Gulfstream, a very well used and lovingly cared for GIIB. I love old things. Kerry W. GipeSavannah Georgia, USAUS FAA A&P / Commercial Pilot Multi Engine Land IFRYour talent is a gift from God. How you use your talent is your gift back to God.
November 15, 20223 yr My Honda will be 20 years old in February, paint looks horrible, but it runs great. November 16, 20223 yr Another common source of deflation is the valve cores. Temperature change is another culprit. Usually the first cold snap in Texas will knock out about five pounds in each tire. This is probably from going from warm to cold in a short period of time. Bill W
November 17, 20223 yr I know this may not apply. But, I drove a 1957 Chevrolet Corvette for 50 years. On it's 50th anniversary I gave it to my oldest son. And he has since passed on to his son as a college graduation present. My grandson tells me that, as November 13, the speedometer shows all of 73,407 miles (118,137 km). A true garage queen... I had a door hinge spring fall off, inside the door panel, so I'm working on retrieving the spring from the bottom of the inside of the door. Also, after I removed the interior door panel, suddenly my power window won't go up or down. I may have grounded something...ugh..
