Looking for a decent video card recommendation

Recommended Posts

My current setup is:

CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 3800X 8-Core Processor - 8 Cores RAM - 32 GB GPU -

Graphics - AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT

Motherboard - ROG STRIX X570-E GAMING

It runs ok but gets stuttery in the big cities.   Just looking for something that's a bit better.  I'm not hell bent on AMD or NVIDIA.  I'd go either way.

I'm sure you'll get plenty of recommendations for video cards, but my recollection is that stuttering in big cities is more likely a processor issue than a video card issue due to the number of objects in big cities.  And you can probably verify that by observing in developer mode if you system is main thread or gpu limited in those areas.

Looking at your specs, I would guess a 3070/3080 would balance pretty well with your processor.  And more than 8 GB on the card is a plus too.

I suggest you seriously look at either a Radeon 6800 XT or 6900 XT. Both comes with 16Gb of video ram and are going for very attractive prices now.

I have a 3080 and the sim runs fine, but your CPU is going to bottleneck your entire system.

I switched from a 1070ti to a RX 6800XT and am very pleased. It feels weird not being nVidia after so many years, but I just couldn’t spend the extra $300+ for a 3090 with nearly the same performance.

If that were my rig I would be looking at a new cpu, motherboard and RAM combo before a new GPU. Especially if you are looking for a smoother city experience.

Yeah I'd say the CPU will bottleneck a newer video card...  maybe a card like the 6800xt or 3060 Ti would be good?

Depends on the card he gets.  And at higher resolutions the GPU will bottleneck.

I'd really not like to change it all. I just built it in late 2020. I'm thinking of stepping up to a Ryzen 9 5900 and as a few of you suggested, 6800. But that'll come a bit later. Sounds like the CPU may be the bigger issue here. I run it using eyefinity on 3 monitors. If I turn that off and just use the single monitor, the frame rate is exceptional. Even in the bigger cities.

Well, if you go the cpu route I'd go with a 5800X3D.  You should not need to change anything else (keep motherboard, and keep your ram).   Right now the gettin's good on the 5800X3D because it probably won't be available new anymore in a few months.

Ryzen 9 5900 would be inferior to the 5800X3D in MSFS.
