Help has arrived...

My granddaughter is here now and she is a godsend.  I'm so relieved.  She is wonderful with her grandma.  She seems to know exactly what to do.  She arrived early last night from South Carolina with my great grandson who is only 4.

At 5:00 this morning I heard Betty mumbling something from the next room.  I looked in and Havana was tending to her.

Betty is unable to sit up by herself and she mumbles unintelligibly.

It's such a relief to be able to sleep the whole night through.  I was doing this all by myself for 7 straight days except for a hospice nurse to come in for about 15 or 20 minutes once a day to take Betty's vitals.  I was totally worn out.

I thought a good TV movie would be of an 89 year old man who needs to walk with a cane trying to tend to a dying 85 year old woman 24/7.

But the Cavalry has arrived.  And I am so grateful.  And today I will be able to get outside and take my great grandson to the swings and slides in the park across the street,  The oldest and youngest members of the family.

Betty hasn't much longer now.  Sunday we started her on liquid morphine.  The hospice nurse showed me how to deliver it to her orally.  Her passing will be a blessing to both of us.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

You are in my thoughts Noel.

I am so glad to learn you now have some help.  Liquid morphine is such a blessing. During my late brother's extended battle with hepatic cancer, between the liquid morphine and tablet Oramorph, he was relieved of most of the intense pain at least.

It's a blessing that you have your great grandson to provide some happy distraction to help fill in large parts of the days. As always my friend, my daily prayers include both you and Betty.

Noel, so good to hear that you are not alone. You are indeed blessed with a wonderful granddaughter.

Betty died early this morning between midnight and 1 AM.  She was breathing at midnight when I went to bed and at 1:00 when my granddaughter was supposed to give her the 2 hour doe of morphine she shook me awake and told me her grandmother was dead.

Betty lived a good life.  And there is nothing to be sorrowful about.  Her death was just the last stage of her life.

That span between 80 and 90 is when most of us are expected to die.  It's not really a mournful time.  She was 25 and I was 29 when we got married.  She lived to be 85 and the fact that we had full and fruitful lives and were still together after 60 years is not something to be mourned.

The thousands of memories I have of our life together is something to be celebrated, not mourned.  And I think that's the way she would have wanted it too.

She will be cremated and I will scatter her ashes at the Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge where she spent so many happy days admiring and counting the birds.

One journey has ended, yet another has begun. Let us celebrate the first journey via our memories.
