PMDG 737 Update

In all my years of flying IRL, I never did an intersection takeoff. A good friend of mine who was a retired B 52 instructor and used to go flying with me, always told me to go to the end of the runway and I do the same in the sim. Another minute or two is no big deal.

Indeed, and if I were doing it for real I would take every chance I had to use the full runway but we are talking about simulation here. It's about entertainment, surely 😉

Just take a look at the big airports. We do intersection takeoffs every day.

I live near KATL which is rather big, before that I lived next to KFLL and a few miles from KMIA. I never saw an airliner do an intersection takeoff, and I used to park next to these airports and watch takeoffs and landings  for hours.

Why bother taxiing all the way to a runway intersection? Just takeoff on the nearest taxiway. [sarcasm]

The only intersection departure's I have ever done where in GA aircraft, don't need an EFB for that.

They do it in real life all the time at airport like ORD and JFK.  The controllers on vatsim also follow the procedure.

You'll see it the whole day long at Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, London, Munich and so on....its a common thing. There are even airports (EHAM, LFPG for example that have two planes lining up the same runway at the same time but different intersections.

Even though it is a sim, I always fly it like I would a real aircraft, and try not to  practice unsafe patterns.

I use this tool for performance calcs (includes Simbrief integration as well), fantastic tool covers tons of aircraft!  Of course you can always set full power scotty mode and go for it, but for a more refined FMC setup this works a treat until the EFB comes out.

Intersection takeoffs are the norm at EWR, JFK, and ORD, to name just a few.  We do them sometimes at SEA too.  They're used routinely at many hub airports.  There's nothing unusual about them; nor is there anything unsafe, as you always have a valid performance solution for any takeoff.

I couldn't care less about an EFB in the PMDG though.  Navigraph's in game panel is far more usable than looking at a smaller piece of screen real estate to see the same thing.  A perf calc would be nice (not very important in the sim though; how many folks even have a chance of losing an engine on takeoff in the sim?), but could just as easily be built into a CDU interface as many of us use an ACARS based perf solution in reality.

Didn't realize that, I just have never seen one in real life.

Well, I guess this turned into an EFB thread instead of the PMDG update.

I am enjoying the 900ER in Queenstown and about to start taxing.

I think it's time to get off the internet and start flying instead.

Judging by your avatar, I'm guessing that you like to fly at "ludicrous speed". 😆

That'd be my vote. An EFB would be great especially for VR, but an integrated Send/Receive performance tool built into the CDU would be awesome.

When flying your PMDG, Fenix, or IniBuild airliners you'll never find yourself putting it down on the remaining runway, like you may in a GA aircraft. My pre departure brief in the Cessna was always "(...) if we encounter an engine failure or fire after rotation with usable runway remaining, we'll land on the remaining runway (...)" That's not possible in a transport category aircraft, and so an intersection take-off isn't poor aeronautical decision making like it absolutely is in GA flying.

Take-offs are optional, landings are mandatory.
The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.
To make a small fortune in aviation you must start with a large fortune.

There's nothing less important than the runway behind you and the altitude above you.
It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground.

But intersection takeoff will get you to V1 much sooner and V1 should be a much lower airspeed, I would think.
