MSFS 2020 seems to work a lot better in W11 than W10

Featured Replies

I recently switched to Windows 11 and the only thing I noticed was that HDR works much better in Windows 11 than it did in Windows 10.  I actually couldn't use it with the sim in Windows 10 for some reason.  I was hoping for a performance boost with the switch as well but didn't notice one.

Good for you.... With 300+ PCs at work, 3 at home, over different VPNs and with critical aviation weather on it, sometimes Win10 is a true nightmare for me and colleagues... Usually no more problems once we go Linux or Win11...

Yeah, I guess that is why 3 out of 4 people still stay with windows 10. 😉

Me included!.

My wife bought a laptop last summer that came with W11 installed and asked me to do its initially setup, installing programs, etc. I didn't like the interface, and it was certainly difficult to me to install several simple programs. I'll stay with W10 until it's impossible to continue with it.

Same here. HDR implementation is improved in W11. That is all I've noticed.

Wow, that’s neat. Do you provide weather for services like WSI? That’s what our dispatch uses for flight planning and weather.

So to avert giving anyone a bum steer, I have flown both of my usual test flights and the Main thread reading from RTSS was skewed until I updated RTSS after the W11 update. Main thread usage was at least double once I updated RTSS. Still I think I see a performance improvement but of course I'm not going back to W10 to try to quantify it.

So may people have moved to windows 11??? According to the latest statistics windows 11 is installed at around 23 % of windows devices/ PCs and windows 10 is installed at around 75 % of them.

I'm referring to here Bob, there is enough of an 'n' of simmers using Win 11 to conclude that kind of reduction in load on the main thread didn't come from moving to Win 11.

BobSK8 Posted this earlier in one of the main Win10vs11 thread.

I wouldn't put too much weight on just one test, as there can be outlying factors for different hardware-driver combos, but interesting anyhow.

When people upgrade the OS, they also update the video driver and it resets some video settings, so I think that is the ongoing theory right now of why something might have changed, or the person just hit a wave and took the performance measurement on the wrong side of the wave. Performance varies at times.

No noticeable performance improvement here, but I am happy to be running W11 with no difficulties, and with MSFS dead stable.

Not sure why some W10 users are so defensive or have a problem with W11, as I find them virtually identical. It's a strange phenomenon that I can't understand.   Even the upgrade went without a single hitch.

I changed my taskbar to be like W10 in a few clicks (i.e. not centralised, and the only thing I didn't like), and I feel right at home.

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Intel 14900K in a Z790 motherboard with water cooling, RTX 4080, 32 GB 6000 CL30 DDR5 RAM, W11 and MSFS on Samsung 980 Pro NVME SSD's.  Core Isolation Off, Game Mode Off.

Stop obsessing about "performance" - you'll lead a more fulfilling life.

Win11 here as well, they are so similar I didn't have too much trouble with it, but there were a few nuisances and registry settings to change.

Think people just had underlying issues with this OS if they see any significant performance differences. They are very much the same underneath in most regards and every benchmarks done in a proper testing environment, has both of them landing within percentages of each other, basically standard variability in testing.
