Just going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱
Trying to keep peace and harmony and the will of Landru on the site seems to be a full time job!

A few weeks ago I was shopping at Walmart and I saw robot coming down the aisle.  I had no idea what it was doing.  As it passed me I said, "Good morning."  But it didn't answer me.  They aren't very polite.

Maybe it was this one:  https://www.engadget.com/2020-01-10-walmart-alphabot-grocery-picker-operational.html

Noel

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

This robot stuff looks pretty cool, and it's kind of neat that we're watching old sci-fi stuff become reality.  However...

This trend of replacing people with robots is very concerning.  What are all the people who did these jobs going to do when they are replaced by machines?

Oh, I've heard the arguments like "they can retrain to code or become techs who repair and maintain the machines", but it doesn't take millions of human technicians and programmers to maintain millions of robots.

The fact is that there will be a lot fewer jobs available as more and more companies replace their human employees with machines.  You even see this in the medical field where nurse practitioners and physician assistants are replacing MDs, as they know just enough, and have powerful AI diagnostic software to help them, to do most of what higher paid MDs used to do.  The funny thing is, though, costs have not come down.  You would think they would, right?

Companies and businesses will replace human employees with machines and software as it means more profit - period.  An added bonus is that they will no longer have to deal with so many pesky humans and their needs, problems, mistakes, gripes, demands, etc.

A brave new world is coming, and coming fast.

That is the question that I have asked for the past few years.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

The plan is generally described by the UN, WEF, and various think tanks and other organizations like the Rand Corporation, Ford Foundation, and Rockefeller Foundation.

The unfortunate unemployed masses will be housed in tiny apartments in 15-minute cities and provided a small income in the form of a digital currency.  Their resource usage will be rationed, and if they wish to travel they will have to use mass transit as cars will be prohibitively expensive and likely not even allowed for those folks subscribed to the new welfare system.  They will be issued a digital ID which they must have on their person at all times and which will track their movements.  Travel in general will be limited and only allowed under certain circumstances.  All electronic communication will be monitored and recorded.

Eventually those still employed and what remains of the middle class will be forced into a similar system, albeit a bit better off than the poor and unemployed.

Once 80+% of the population is living under the new regime, more restrictions will follow such as a one-child policy, or as some have proposed, forced sterilization, as one of the ultimate goals is to reduce the world's population.

Anyway, this is the type of future many in positions of power and wealth talk about.

I resemble that!  I made a great living as a copier salesperson, and then I owned the copier company.  Great living if you can handle it! EVERYBODY needs a copier.

Dave, the post robotic society you described is called Utopia.

Yeah, I was waiting on that comeback! 26 years with Harris/Lanier, Harris/3m, Lanier World wide, and finally the buyout by Ricoh America.  Happily retired for 13 years!  😀
