Is Premium Deluxe for 2024 worth it if I own it for 2020?

Featured Replies

So I am reading this thread here in the official forums, and it appears that if you own the Premium Deluxe version of MSFS 2020, your planes will transfer over to MSFS 2024, especially the 787: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/will-add-ons-from-premium-deluxe-edition-transfer-to-msfs2024/639669

I own the Premium Deluxe version of MSFS 2020. For me, the plane that makes the Premium Deluxe version of MSFS 2020 worth it is the 787, especially after all the work that Working Title did on it. And now you can get the Horizon Simulations and Kuro mod for the 787.

I would like to continue to fly the 787 in MSFS 2024, with the Horizon Simulations and Kuro mods, and all the updates they do for it in MSFS 2024.  But I looked at all the new planes that come with the Deluxe and Premium Deluxe version of MSFS 2024, and I am not too interested in those planes. So I am considering buying the Standard Version of MSFS, if I can continue to fly the Horizon Simulation and Kuro mods for the 787 in MSFS 2024.

So my question is, will the 787 from MSFS 2020 transfer over nicely to MSFS 2024, and if the 787 is further upgraded in MSFS 2024, I should get those upgrades for free, because I already own it in MSFS 2020, right?

The MSFS 2024 FAQ does not mention anything about MSFS 2020 content that comes with the Deluxe or Premium edition and whether you will get the upgrades for those content for free in MSFS 2024. It only mentions "purchased content" from the MSFS marketplace:

Quote

For content you already purchased in MSFS 2020, upgrades to Microsoft-produced content (e.g. Reno Air Races, Local Legends, Famous Flyers, Expert Series) will be free to you.

I would think if you get upgrades for the Reno Air Races, Local Legends, Famous Flyers, Expert Series, etc, for free, then for consistency, if I buy the Standard Version of MSFS 2024, I should get any upgrades that they make to the 787 in MSFS 2024 for free as well.

The last thing I want is for the 787 to transfer over to MSFS 2024, but then Working Title or Asobo does further changes to it, and I don't get the upgraded version of the 787 and I am stuck with the "2020" version of the 787.  In that case, the Horizon Simulations and Kuro mods for the 787 will be broken, if there is a "2020" version of the 787, and a "2024" version of the 787 that has been upgraded/changed by Asobo or Working Title in MSFS 2024.

Having content transfer over to MSFS 2024 is one thing, and we all know that content from MSFS 2020 can transfer over to MSFS 2024.  Continually getting upgrades on the content that transferred over to MSFS 2024 (ie. the 787) is another. I am more interested in the latter.

I always go with the top version.  I find I need it at some point to get certain features the others don't have.  This time it's the 'Aviator's' version.🍺

In the end, you still need to own MSFS 2024 to get all the new features of MSFS 2024.

Having said that, I think that's part of the point. If all the planes and airports carry over from MSFS 2020 to MSFS 2024, and you also get any upgrades for those airports and planes in MSFS 2024 for free, it makes sense to buy the Standard Version of MSFS 2024, if you previously owned the Deluxe and Premium Deluxe versions of MSFS 2020, if you are not interested in the new airports and new planes in the Deluxe/Premium Deluxe version of MSFS 2024.

Assuming that you get the upgrades for the airports and planes in MSFS 2024 for free, for the airports and planes that carry over from MSFS 2020 from the Deluxe and Premium Deluxe versions of MSFS, it comes down to whether you like the new airports and new planes offered in the Deluxe and Premium Deluxe version of MSFS 2024.

Now if we don't get the upgrades for free for airports and planes that carry over to MSFS 2024 from the Deluxe and Premium Deluxe versions of MSFS 2020, that changes the whole ball game. For example, if the 787 carries over but remains a "2020" version of the 787, and Working Title makes the 787 better in 2024, this will create a separate "2024" version of the 787, which would mean the "2020" version of the 787 will be incompatible with the latest Horizon Simulation and Kuro mods.  I hope they update the MSFS 2024 FAQ to mention what happens with Deluxe and Premium Deluxe content that transfers over, and whether we continue to get free upgrades for that content.

I’m not convinced yet, reading the FAQ it mentions purchased add ons but doesn’t specifically mention the the extra stuff you get with the higher packages of 2020.

Playing devils advocate, it wouldn’t be a good business model to only have to buy 1 premium package and have everything carry over for free. Surely they’d prefer to sell you another premium package.

I don’t know, not taking the risk as last time I bought the standard and had to pay more to go down the upgrade path than if I’d have just gone high end to start with, once I realised that the default aircraft with mods were actually worth having.

There’s no immediate rush , unless you want the limited edition collectors edition, so hopefully it’ll get clarified before you have to make the purchase.

So to be clear, because I own the Premium Deluxe version in MSFS 2020, I also get all the non-new planes and non-new airports that come with the Deluxe and Premium Deluxe version in MSFS 2024. The non-new planes and non-new airports are supposed to carry over to MSFS 2024, even if I buy the Standard Version of MSFS 2024. For example, I get the 787, Baron G58, etc, that existed in the Premium Deluxe version of MSFS 2020, if I buy the Standard Version of MSFS 2024.

What I don't get are the new planes and new airports in MSFS 2024.

On my count, there are 15 new planes if I buy the Premium Deluxe version for MSFS 2024: xxdp6m815mpd1.jpeg

I don't know how you come up with 45 new planes for Premium Deluxe. I count 15 new planes if you buy Premium Deluxe for MSFS 2024, for people that own the Premium Deluxe version of MSFS 2020. The other planes that are not new, should carry over if you own the Premium Deluxe version of MSFS 2020.

Yeah, it would be nice to get an official answer from MSFS staff. Even in that thread in the official MSFS forum where people claim Deluxe and Premium Deluxe airplanes and airports should carry over from MSFS 2020 to MSFS 2024, no official staff gave an answer, it was just the assumption by other forum members that it would carry over.

To be frank I am in the same boat, the 2024 standard version would be perfectly fine for me since there are simply too many default planes I will never touch anyway (probably 4/5 of them), BUT, I want the Longitude (which I have presently in 2020 since I own the Premium De Luxe) and it is only part of the PDL version once again (so is the 787 by the way for you). I have strong doubts that this argument will fly (pun intended) but let's hope you get a straight (positive?) answer from Microsoft. I won't be buying 2024 before May to let the dust settle after the first six to eight months of release with its inevitable bug fixing, third party addons updated etc... so by then this answer will be clear!

The game desperately needs an import dialog on install :

A previous version of Microsoft Flight Simulator has been detected on your system. Would you like to import your existing content (only compatible data is selectable) into msfs 2024?

Please select :

Scenery

Control custom settings (these will be stored as a back up scheme you may load within the game)

Please note NO custom /community folder addons may be imported during installation. These must be installed separately after successful msfs 2024 install.

They have been extremely generous with all the new features and airplanes on the standard version. I doubt that they are going to give us access to aircraft from our previous purchase, but it would be good business for Asobo to do it. I hardly flew any default airplanes and bought the premium version of 2020. I doubt that I'll be flying default aircraft.

They need to think hard about this one since there's no discount for upgrading to 2024.

Update: It looks like all aircraft in 2020 will need an update to 2024 based on the new walk around feature.

I just want to point out, some of the default plane for MSFS 2020 are decent. For example, the iniBuilds A300 and iniBuilds A320 (not study level, but "decent"). Then you have the planes that Working Title worked on, like the 787, Cirrus SR 22T, Citiation CJ4, Longitude, etc.  Some people that own the Premium Deluxe version really like the work that Working Title did on the Longitude, although it's not a plane that I really fly. These are all default planes mind you, even though they were worked on by iniBuilds and Working Title.
