Fantastic...

Who is a "victim" of *what* "abuse" exactly? 🙄

To be clear...I really don't think Seb was saying, "We don't simulate hail because that would be dangerous." This is the problem with spoken word; people make sort of off-the-cuff remarks, or commenta

If you know your words, you'd also know that this isn't a democracy. We don't get to "vote", and that's okay, because there are no "rights" here.

AvSim is a benevolent oligarchy, and I'm just fine with that because it doesn't control my IRL life.

This is a Village Square, and we're all free to speak our minds within the bounds of decency.

I'm glad we are on the same page then.

Governments change don't forget, whether they intend to or not. Just because something IS does not mean it SHOULD be.

Criticizing dissent is never a good look, but that is just my opinion I know!

Before this thread gets closed due to non-topic related stuff, I’d just like to mention this: I searched badbadweather.com for hail and couldn’t find anything. Maybe it’s not as bad or dangerous as Seb says?

And btw hail in METARS is referred to as GS or GR, depending on the size.

Quote

Small hail (METAR code GS) is hail or graupel of less than 5 mm in diameter. True hail (METAR code GR) is hail of 5 mm or more in diameter. GS and GR may fall from CB clouds. GS (not GR) may fall from Cumulus congestus (TCU or Towering Cumulus cloud)

I'm not sure of the algorithms of that website but I can assure you that hail is as bad and dangerous as Seb alludes too, you've seen hail that smashes car windscreens right? Now imagine that hitting a wing of a light aircraft, of course said light aircraft shouldn't be anywhere near the storm causing the hail but that's easier said than done in some scenarios.

Someone mentioned updrafts and downdrafts in this thread. I remember flight training in the summer over northern NJ in a 172. The updrafts were significant! (At least I thought so!)

I have not experienced this in the sim. Does anyone know if the updrafts/downdrafts are simulated in MSFS 2024? (I did see they are planning enhanced wake turbulence, so I have some hope )

I have no doubt that hail can be dangerous. Would not like to fly in a hailstorm. Not in any aircraft.

Yes. Seb even talks about them in the video

Hail is also rarely reported by automated weather services.

I get that, but why does the sim have to "mirror" exactly what is going on in real world at real time? It's not like we are seeing every cloud in the exact positions and sizes according to real world (or ever will). I would be fine with the simulator producing hail "if the conditions are just right to do so", and by using intelligent data to determine this. They could likely do the same for tornadoes and lightning, there is data that shows tornado warning areas (just like an MOA area on a GPS map for example). If they can map/display MOA's, there are likely ways to map out a rectangle area of tornado possibility (as well as lightning and yes, hail!). Way beyond my knowledge of how to do that but just seems attainable, if the right person dedicates the time and resources to it with some reliable data.

I'd rather have realistic depiction of windshear and up/downdrafts than hail. I don't think Active Sky has incorporated this either, but I could be wrong.

One of the realities of 'flight sim' use v RW piloting is the complete absence of meaningful consequences in flight simming.   I try to address this thru artificial means, namely the flight management scoring routines in A Pilot's Life and Self-Loading Cargo and those help keep my head in the flight for sure.  I wouldn't mind seeing some even beefier consequences for example for hard landings where you damage gear those apps would restrict use of the plane involved for a week for repairs or something along those lines.  Easy to imagine a day in flight simming when hail damage to the aircraft causes related failures.  Or when a goose strike into a jet engine does what it can do, things of that nature will eventually happen and could happen now were there interest in such.
