XP12 now has weather radar. Why can’t MSFS 2024?

Please stop calling for locks.  If the moderators want to take action they can weed out the annoying threads.

By continuously locking threads you just end up throwing the baby out with the bath-water and spoiling it for the rest of us, which maybe plays in to the hands of the disruptors.

Nothing wrong with XP VS MSFS discussion as long as it is factual and respectful.  It will always happen and you will never stop it cropping up.
I am disappointed that you are one of the ones calling for locks.  It is a discussion forum after all, and if you don't like the content of the thread, you have the option not to read it and just step out.
Also, don't you see that if disruptors wanted to cause havoc in here, they could just inject this X v Y conversation into every thread and get them all shut down based on your criteria.  Not good.

I don't get advocating locking threads from general discussion. Moderators should be removing disruptors and people not discussing in good faith. Locking the threads simply rewards trolling behavior because they achieved their goal.

We're adults here and more than capable of having healthy discussion on contentious subjects, do not reward the trolls.

And? People inherently like comparing things. If Mercedes is doing things I'd like to see in a BMW, then I'm going to bring it up that I wish BMW did it.

So what some people want added to MSFS weather radar is ability to tilt, and not to look through mountains, is that right?  Or is there anything else missing?

I wonder how difficult that would be to implement in MSFS.  I should think the tilt might not be too difficult, as it already sees the precipitation at the aircraft level, but trying to get mountains to be opaque might be more difficult.
It has to be doable I suppose as anything is possible in a simulation, it is just down to how much processing power that might take.

There are some forms of ground radar in operation in the sim, so maybe it would be a case of subtracting one from another in the simplest terms.

So far it seems that way. 👍

Having a different opinion isn’t against forum rules. If anyone has a problem with a particular post then report it giving reasons why you think it breaks rules. This isn’t directed at you bobcat, just a general piece of advice.

Initially yes, tilt would be great. Ultimately though developers want a data readback of weather infront of an aircraft, so they can create custom radars with projections and feature set that would be found in a given aircraft. XPlane currently provides both these features, a radar texture map and a data readback which offers flexibility.

What is a 'radar texture map'?

Usually when designing display gauges you have layers that are stacked on-top that ultimately make up a gauge like a PFD(If you've ever worked with HTML you'd see the similarities) . For example an Airbus PFD, you'll have the background layer, then the speed tape layer, the horizon layer and so on and so forth until you see what you usually do today. MSFS provides a radar layer that is added onto the ND guage, that is the "radar texture map" (Exact naming can be wrong). Developers have no control over how to design that layer, it is simply what MSFS provides. Developers want the data *behind* what powers that layer, sort of like the speed pitot tube data (I'm simplifying) powering the speed tape on the PFD. This is so they can create their own radar layer with whatever flavour of colors, features etc etc they'd like to implement.

I'm simplifying a lot and some names may be incorrect but hopefully that explains things.

Even though 2024 is my sim of choice, I have zero issues acknowledging when the competition does something better. I like the fact that there's competition since it adds weight to our requests for more features.

Enjoyed that channel, very enthusiastic and he's always out there covering rain or shine or fog or snow or ... kudos to him, glad he is still going.

From what I understand and have heard/read is that he was the first to do it, then others followed. What sets him apart is his love and enthusiasm for aviation. He also does military shows and other segments related to legendary airplanes. The other aviation channels for the most part have no commentary and just transmit the Tower radio transmission. That's pretty cool too but I prefer Jerry's style a lot more.

I did find the video with his cousin Johnny Heather and Capt Chris in a real flight simulator.

100% agree with this.  I want to add that a few of the typical disruptors have been absent from this MSFS forum lately (probably due to warnings), and most threads have been relatively orderly and productive here in the MSFS forum because of that.

I just hope the MSFS forum remains orderly and productive, the last few weeks have been pretty good here.

I think tilt is the last major missing feature from the weather radar API.

For directly accessing the actual weather data, I think it's a MeteoBlue issue.  Pretty much what Redge said in their comment here. My guess is, Jorg has met with MeteoBlue already and they told him "no."

In this context it makes me chuckle you're still carrying that NoXP tag around. Maybe now is the time you will be absolved from your sins? 😁

Good to see we can have a normal discussion around here involving XP, just like that thread over at the XP forum, where MSFS is being discussed as well. Although I prefer a 'clean' forum, I agree with @Lucky38i comparisons are human nature. When we keep it civil I can live with it.
