IniBuilds L-1011: How will you fly the TriJet ?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

As we sit here refreshing the store page for the final March deadline, the real question isn't when the iniBuilds TriStar arrives, but how you intend to fly it.

The L-1011 was the pinnacle of 70s automation, but it still demanded a "thinking" crew. So, which path are you taking?

• The "Casual" Route: Auto-FE, INS shortcuts - the Auto Complete way.

• The "Purist" Route: Manual FE panels, Triple-INS alignment, System Flows, and hand-flown DLC approaches.

Personally, I’m going 100% Purist.

I’ve spent the last few weeks deep in the books—not just for the "Cold & Dark" flows, but studying authentic Delta Airlines Normal and Abnormal procedures.

We aren’t just going to fly it; we’re going to understand it's systems

The Masterclass Tomorrow (Provided it releases 😕)

I recently caught a shout-out from the iniBuilds livestream host for my technical breakdown of the TriStar's systems, and I want to pay that forward.

We’re skipping the "Part 1" basic tutorials and going straight into a Functional Evaluation Flight (FEF).

We’ll be testing:

Direct Lift Control (DLC): Pitch-coupling accuracy on short final.

Hydraulic Redundancy: How the quadruple system actually behaves under stress.

The "Delta Way": Real-world flows from the real Delta L1011 manual.

If you want to join me live 😉

If you want the "shortcut" version, there are plenty of previews. If you want to see if this model truly earns the "Study Level" badge through the lens of Delta ops, I’ll see you at the gate.

How about you? Are you letting the Auto-FE take the heat, or are you taking full control on the flight deck?

Cheers,

"Purist" is not realistic! Those planes were designed to fly by multi crew where each crew has own responsibility. Fixating on FE while airplane is free roaming with other members would be gross negligence of safety standard and crew management 🙂

What happens with his plane is for the NTSB to figure, not us 😆

Lets hope it wont get to that! Or we will read a report like - an airplane crash due FE fixated on fuel management while ignoring duty captain and FO 🙂

I won't be flying it at all hehe.

But I'm happy for those who will be.  It's an iconic aircraft for sure.

What a time to be a simmer!

TBH, I don’t want anything to do with the FE activities.

Perfectly happy to do all PIC/FO duties, tho.

VERY interested in how effective the DLC are (they’re quite cool  in the DCS Tomcat 😎) and the FM & physics in general, as well as the 1011 specific techniques.

If it handles well and flies however a 1011 should, then it'll be worth the time to learn the systems.

Q: IniBuilds L-1011: How will you fly the TriJet ?

A: Like it was stolen!

But in all seriousness, mainly just hand fly it with the help of a few navaids and autopilot occasionally.
I am not a deep systems guy due to lack of time, and I just want to appreciate it and all of those glorious liveries they created.  Pure nostalgia for me.

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Intel 14900K in a Z790 motherboard with water cooling, RTX 4080, 32 GB 6000 CL30 DDR5 RAM, W11 and MSFS on Samsung 980 Pro NVME SSD's.  Core Isolation Off, Game Mode Off.

Somewhere in between.  I’ll fly with the INS but using Simbrief to load it.  Not sure if I’ll use a GPS as well or not.

In terms of the FE, I’ll do what I do with the FSS 727.  I’ll do the FE setup and startup on the ground, but once we’re airborne that’s the virtual FE’s job.

I'll be using the shortcuts for the FE if I need to. Trying to perform the duties of three crew as one person is a bit much.

Back in the FS9 days, the PSS Concorde's VFE was entirely necessary because of the complexity of the fuel management process.  Even the Ready for Pushback 747-200's fuel management could be distracting.

If it has multiple INS options that work well, I'll be happy.

If im not lazy, look up an approach, look up an arrival, go VOR to VOR. But stoked to have steam gauge airliner on marketplace.

The thing is, it's not possible in most cases to navigate 100% true to life as nowadays most of the SIDS/STARS aren't possible to be flown purely using radio aids which they would have been back then. But it's nice that IniBuilds have included the feature to include these waypoints in the INS upload - they wouldn't have been originally.

I do think they should've included an FMS as one of the navigation options. Especially for those that to like to fly online. Imagine getting a reroute on Vatsim, good luck with that!

Yeah, I guess that's why they've included the GPS as an option, which isn't entirely unrealistic. My dad recalls when we got a flight deck visit on a Caledonian Tristar in the the late 90s they had a Trimble Flightmate (very early handheld GPS) that they were using. One of the pilots remarked that he wouldn't fly one of those without it.
