Eg, Same as learning to fly an addon with weather set to ISA standard: is it the weather or is the aircraft actually difficult to handle, etc

Yep - I get it. But this isn’t about airports I want to use often. More about comparing addons without distraction.

If I get a new aircraft I tend to do the same route as a 'first flight' just to generally see what it's like and to get a feel for it, but not to test anything specific.

I do it to rank addons against each other. There have been some un-/pleasant surprises.

E.g., on my rig the Default UH-1 Huey (by Taogs) is the best optimized aircraft of the 30 or so I’ve tried - including the Defaults and by a relatively large margin. But it still flies/handles and operates extremely well, and I’m quite familiar with it across all sims.

So, if I’m flying around Manhattan or London, I have a good idea of which aircraft will give me the best chance at a smooth experience.

Yep - generally my experience, as well. And GA is (IMHO) far more engaging in general.

By the same token, though, I personally like to know how they stack up to each other as it may affect my choice of addon for flights into heavy scenery.

I look at this kinda like Edwards Air Force Base. Ie, they didn’t choose it because they liked to fly there, they chose it because it was a great place to test aircraft.

When I used to do a lot of benchmarking I would choose LIRF and fly inland over to Rome, I used that for a good steady FPS check out over water then U turn over and into a city environment.

Now THATS a good idea!

I use KSBA because I am more likely to be sidetracked with just having a good time flying the aeroplane or heelo-copter-gizmo instead of doing any tweaking. Also probably any airport in the PNW stands a good chance of distracting me into practicing approaches or inverted runway passes as opposed to messing with settings and numbers constantly like I used to in previous versions of MFS.

My normal rate of descent is approx 600 FPM (feet per minute). Have to do the math to determine that in regard to FPS (feet per second). LOL!

I also used KEDW for testing and learning aircraft, as it's ideal for anything from GA to large airliners. However, the mod from nickb007 and JKustom introduces a terrain level change that crosses the runways, so it is back to the boring vanilla airport for now. I don't know what Redwing's Edwards is like - I see I can try it out for 24 hours so I might give it a stab. There is a MSFS2020 Boscombe Down which works well in MSFS2024 - it has terrain level changes, but the enormous runway is unaffected by them.
