  1. Thanks Pete! Keep an eye on this thread as there's going to be some more updates today to the doc. Hi Mark, I feel your frustration! The LM team have a great opportunity to make their Learning Center so much better and all it needs is someone to invest a little time to elaborate on some of the settings they published. Given the option, I would rather they spend their time and energy on developing and fixing what's still broke. To answer your questions: texturemaxload what made you pick 30? - Part of it had to do with what was already in my FSX.cfg file so when I started adding in the LM suggested tweaks, I tried to research each one to see what the benefit was and what that specific setting was attempting to "fix". There are quite a few threads between Avsim and the P3D forums stating higher values, in multiples of 3 were having a positive impact on stuttering. For some, the sweet spot was 27, for me it was 30. TBM - This value can be debated and I've seen values range from the default 40 to 160 and read on one German forum values in the thousands. I ran with the default value of 40 for a week and what I noticed was in turns there was noticeable stuttering and and overall lagginess. I tried 160 based on a thread Rob Ainscough started on the P3D forums so throwing caution to the wind I added an extra 0 to the 40 and the results were very positive. If I reduce the number back to the default value, I notice it right away. Having said all this, that number may not work for everyone so if 400 doesn't give you good results, try lower settings. Affinity mask - The jury is still out on this one. On one hand, LM has it published on their Learning Center yet on the other hand, there are several forum posts stating this isn't needed anymore. I put the value in my .cfg file but I need to perform some more in-depth testing to see if it makes any gains. water at Ultra - Perched in the pointy end of the aircraft at FL370 water looks the same to me using medium or ultra I don't typically fly low and slow or in a float plane so I reduced the value to the middle of the range to allow me to up some other settings that are more "important" to me and to also give me the best visuals/performance. As I mentioned above, my settings can be considered conservative to some and all I want to provide are "base" settings from which folks can build upon. Thanks for the questions and if you have any more, please post them up! Mike
  2. Howdee all, A few random shots from some flights I did the past couple of days featuring the PMDG NGX for P3D. Enjoy! Mike A little lens flare courtesy of Photoshop Hold on to yer hats folks, it's gonna get a little rough.
  3. Hi All, With more and more simmers trying P3D and feeling a little lost with setting up the in sim sliders, NVidia Control Panel settings, and general tweaking I thought I would take a shot at providing a framework to help these new P3D simmers. It can feel a little daunting migrating off of one sim platform onto another and even though at its core, P3D is FSX it's still a new platform and getting to know the nuances of it takes time and comes with a lot of frustration. Rather than post up all my screen shots in a forum thread, I've created a PDF file and saved it to DropBox - P3D Settings PDF This doc is by no means complete and as the title states, this is a START and contains the settings that work best on my system but given the settings are what most would consider conservative my hope is it will give folks struggling with what to tweak a good stable base to build upon. I'll keep adding to it based on what I find in the various forms and with the help of the community as a whole so enjoy the doc and please, post any questions, comments or suggestions right here and I'll update as needed. Thanks, Mike
  4. Thanks for the confirmation Steve. Gonna try playing around with NI again. M
  5. Darryl, Those are some fantastic shots!! Everything from the composition, to the lighting to the subject....fantastic!! Mike
  6. Steve, You hit the nail on the head with the "Much confusion arises with the AA section" statement. Just to be sure I'm following what you're saying in this thread: In NI's Antialiasing section the Antialiasing - Setting is set to the default (Application-controled / OFF) In NI's Antialiasing section the Antialiasing - Transparency Supersampling is set to match my MSAA setting in P3D (8x) All other settings in the prepar3d.exe Inspector profile are set to their default values? Is it safe to assume that the only "tweaking" required for AA in P3D as it relates to Inspector is upping the Antialiasing - Transparency Supersampling to 8x SGSSAA (provided your system can handle it)? Thanks, Mike
  7. I like it dirty. Get yer heads out of the gutter, this is a family oriented forum. :-)
  8. I only see this with PMDG and Majestic Q. If you add the "stock" Airbus, Boeing or CRJ VC to one of the many freeware aircraft, you won't see that.
  9. Excellent shots Chris. #4 and #7 are my personal fav's. Mike
  10. I don't know about you but my Accord V6 coupe can and does drag race Corvettes. I just lose every race and they laugh at me when I rev that V6 at the stop light but it doesn't deter me No offence taken! Every system is different, every user is different and everyone's settings are different so of course some people suffer OOMs more than others. I guess I'm just lucky I haven't run into an OOM situation yet.
  11. Hi David, Sorry to hear about the OOM issue you're experiencing. Would you be able to post up all your P3D slider settings and the contents of your p3d.cfg file? This would give a good start for the folks here to help you troubleshoot and while you're at it, also list up all your add-ons you have installed in P3D. I have pretty much all the ORBX stuff for the US including Vector and Global and never had the FSUIPC VAS warning and this is while flying the Aerosoft Airbus or the PMDG 737. Mike
  12. What a great gesture Patrick. I sincerely hope, given his condition and the appearance of how fast things progressed (from the day he made his initial announcement to his passing), that he didn't suffer and that his passing was peaceful. Mike
  13. Hi All, Should have really read the METARs for the flight I was taking. Another one of those jump in, pick a departure and a destination and fly. Not reading the weather reports lead for a very bumpy ride. Enjoy the shots and this aircraft definitely highlights P3D's AA "issues" as in FSX the exterior lines are nice and smooth. Mike
  14. <ENVY>Fantastic shots Rich!!</ENVY> You just forced my hand to go back into REX4 and play around with some of the sky textures. Thanks Rich....thanks a lot. M
  15. Great shots as usual! My last real world flight into Vegas took the same approach as you did and the scenery matches what I saw out my window. The joys of photoreal scenery.
  16. Couldn't agree more with your statement Michael! Great shots.
  17. Whoa!! Stunning shots. Your posts remind me of a great Johhny Cash song. You've been everywhere :-)
  18. Howdee all, Another day, another random departure/arrival kind of flight. Today we moved our operations East and departed from KLGA off runway 04 and unbeknownst to me, I dialed in an initial heading of 030 and flew along for a while then though, "hmmmm...going to need a place to land" so on the FMC I randomly entered in our arrival airport of CYQB and once finished tweaking my legs, I was happy to see I was pretty much on course. I didn't take any shots departing the New York area but will capture some on the next flight out. Enjoy the shots! Mike PS - I don't get around to it enough (but I'm trying to change that!!) and I just wanted to take a second to say this. To everyone who takes the time to share the screen captures from their flights and to everyone who takes the time to post a comment up on mine, thank you! We are a great community.
  19. Hey Steve, Excellent shots and man...you're making it very tempting for me to brush the dust off of my paint kit folder and paint up some planes. Been a while but it's very therapeutic. Oh, by the way...the time preview tip...THANKS!!! I've been having way too much fun with it. Cheers! Mike
  20. Hey Rich, Can you elaborate on the above? Curious what differences/fixes you're seeing on your rig. Never mind...just saw your reply above!!
  21. For what it's worth, here's my couple of pennies on making the switch from FSX to P3D. It's not the type of activity you can undertake in a week-end and make a positive assessment on staying with P3D or rolling back to FSX. You need a little time to put the sim through it's paces and while it may fundamentally be FSX at its core, it is a "new" sim. Give yourself a couple of weeks to load up all the now FSX/P3D compatible add-ons you have (PMDG is a new purchase unfortunately) and test/play. The first thing that struck me with P3D is the lack of needing to overhaul the .cfg file to get stable, smooth flight. 99.9% of P3D tweaking is done within the sim and it involves balancing your sliders to give you the best quality/performance. FPS aside for a moment, P3D has been able to deliver consistent smooth flight for me between FSDT and other heavy 3rd party scenery add-ons compared to FSX where I would always observe stuttering/pausing as I was getting close to the same add-ons in FSX and in many cases, the FSUIPC chime would start ringing letting me know I was about to blow the VAS limit and the sim would crash. Now, I can complete a flight without any concern of the sim crashing due to VAS or OOM. Are there some shortcomings in P3D, yes but when you look at the two platforms, which one currently has developers actively working on it? FSX hit a plateau many moons ago and the dev team is long gone whereas LM has an active team continuing to advance the sim and fix much of what was broke in FSX when it was released. At the end of the day, we’re nowhere near a point where the only option is to move over to P3D because FSX as a sim platform is “dead” so if you’re happy with FSX, stick with it!! There’s still a massive community around it and 3rd party developers are still supporting it however, take a look at how many FSX only 3rd party developers are now making their add-ons dual purpose.
  22. Stunning shots Steve! I might be wrong but I could have sworn I heard the clattering of paint cans and brushes dropping on the floor and someone who sounded like you muttering under their breath..."Where did I put that base white paint can for the 73!!??"
